11/02/06

Good morning. It’s Thursday, November 2, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.  Welcome to the November Sweep!

ABC has ordered four additional scripts of What About Brian?, it’s Monday 10p show, on top of its original 13 episode order. Brian is from Touchstone TV and JJ Abrams.

For those of you looking for some closure from the NBC drama Kidnapped, which was taken off the air on Saturday night and replaced with repeats of L&O: Criminal Intent, look to the internet.  The network is currently talking with the show’s producers about running the remaining episodes on NBC.com.

Tonight’s Premiere:
Fox:  The O.C. at 9p
MTV:  Rob & Big Black at 1030p

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

Reba will join The CW’s Sunday night schedule beginning November 19 with piggy-backed new episodes at 7p and 730p, followed by 7th Heaven at 8p and an encore of America’s Next Top Model at 9p. As of the following week, its typical schedule will be a repeat episode at 7p and an original at 730p.  Reba is produced by Twentieth Century Fox Television and Acme Productions.

The Military Channel will debut Around the Services, a daily half-hour news program that offers viewers updated military news and press briefings from top defense officials and military divisions from around the globe. Starting November 6, Around the Services will air each day at 4p from the Department of Defense.

BBC America has acquired a number of new series with U.S. premiere dates scheduled for next January:

  • Turn Back Your Body Clock – premieres January 17 at 9p, the eight half-hour episodes in this reality series follows Dr. Una Coales who prescribes a complete lifestyle transformation to her patient, perhaps leading to a longer life expectancy. Produced and distributed by Celador.
  • Feel the Force – premieres January 19 at 940p, a comedy series about two female police officers in Edinburgh who are often distracted and more interested in their male co-workers rather than public safety. Six forty-minute episodes produced and distributed by Catherine Bailey Productions.
  • The Wow Factor – premieres January 17 at 10p, interior designer Tara Bernerd visits a new home each week and redesigns a room that needs help to give it the “wow factor.” Ten one-hour episodes produced by IWC Media and distributed by RDF.

Univision Communications Inc. has acquired the remaining 50% of Mexican-based Disa Records and Edimonsa Publishing. In June 2001, Univision purchased the first 50% of Disa from the Chavez family making Univision Music Group the top Latin music company in the U.S. with a 40% market share. Disa Records will continue to operate as a separate label under UMG, while Edimonsa Publishing will merge into the Univision Music Publishing companies.

* BROADBAND & DIGITAL *

NeuLion Incorporated and Africast TV (www.africast.tv) have teamed to launch a new African consumer broadcast network in December using NeuLion’s iPTV Service as its platform.  The new broadband network will offer African skewed programming – news, soaps, movies and more – by subscription and pay-per-view to consumers worldwide, and it will also aggregate other television channels from Africa and feature VOD of other African programs. Consumers can subscribe to Africast TV for $19.95 per month. Also this December, Africast will add a 24/7 African Music Video Channel and an African News Channel for their global customers. Long term plans call for more than 30 new TV channels to follow in the next several months.

Rainbow Media’s sportskool, the on-demand television network that offers athletic instruction, will debut the new original series, Skiing with Bode Miller on December 5. The show, featuring the world champ ski racer, will provide ski instruction, strategy and conditioning tips. Shot on location in Portillo, Chile, the series also features U.S. ski team coach Phil McNichol offering instruction, as well as footage of Bode Miller’s life. sportskool is now at more than 21 million in total distribution and features other well-known athletes offering instruction in their particular sport, including soccer star Mia Hamm, Stanley Cup champion Peter Forsberg and baseball veteran Tony Gwynn.

Nielsen Media Research and NetRatings, Inc. have launched their National TV/Internet Fusion database which merges information from television and internet panels giving a comprehensive picture of consumers’ TV and online activities. This new service is the first to be developed through Nielsen’s Anytime Anywhere Media Measurement (A2/M2) initiative. Fusion combines Nielsen’s National People Meter sample of more than 30,000 TV viewers with NetRatings’ NetView sample of approximately 29,000 panelists. This month Nielsen will test the impact of internet measurement on television panel-quality metrics, installing software meters (including those patented by NetRatings) on the laptops and personal computers of homes installed with People Meters. If the test goes well, Nielsen will roll out the new meters during the 2007-2008 television season.

Spanish-language Telemundo programming and bilingual mun2 shows will be available for purchase and download on the iTunes Store following an agreement between the two networks and Apple. The new content features a slew of Telemundo programming, and reality content from mun2 including Day In Day Out with Juanes and a special The Immigration Special. The shows are now available for purchase and download for just $1.99 each. More Telemundo content will be available on iTunes in the coming months.

* PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT *

CBS has given a put pilot commitment to a new comedy project from the creators of Will & Grace, David Kohan and Max Mutchnick.  THe project is loosely based on David and Max’s friendship which goes back to their days at Beverly Hills High School.  The story will revolve around two writers, one straight and one gay, and their assistants.  The project will be produced by KoMut Entertainment and Warner Bros. TV.

Rob Lowe will join the cast of Brothers & Sisters for a six story arc.  According to Variety, he will play a Senator running for re-election in the midst of a nasty divorce, and who becomes romantically involved with Calista Flockhart’s characters.

The N has signed a development deal with actor/writer/rap recording artist Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, to develop and produce his first TV project, Halls of Fame.  Ludacris will serve as an executive producer on the series and he will write and perform original music for each episode, as well as appear as a recurring character.  The series follows two sisters, one a singer and the other an aspiring fashion designer, who have just moved to town and want nothing more than to attend the local performing arts high school, Halls of Fame.

Casting Call: CMT’s broadband site, Loaded at CMT.com, has just launched a national talent search, Music City Madness Video Contest, to find the next undiscovered country music star. The contest will give unsigned artists the opportunity to show off unpublished music to CMT executives and fans, and the winner will record an episode of Studio 330 Sessions, the original online performance series on CMT Loaded. Now through January 31, interested entrants can submit an original video performance online or by mail. For complete rules and information go to madness.CMT.com.
