Cynopsis: Sports
11.21.13

Good morning. It’s Thursday, November 21, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Longtime NFL broadcast staple Dan Dierdorf is turning in his microphone. Dierdorf, with 43 consecutive years in the league as a Hall of Fame player and Hall of Fame broadcaster, will retire at the end of the season.

“I have been blessed to spend my entire life in the game I love,” said Dierdorf. “I had an opportunity to go from the field directly to the broadcast booth where I have had the privilege of working with the giants of our business including Ray Scott, Lindsey Nelson, Jack Buck, Dick Stockton, Al Michaels, Frank Gifford, Verne Lundquist, Dick Enberg and lastly, my partner, Greg Gumbel. It has become a challenge for me to travel to a different NFL city every week, so it’s time to step aside. This has been a wonderful ride as I really have lived the dream.”

Dierdorf began his NFL broadcasting career in 1984 as a color analyst for KMOX’s Radio coverage of the St. Louis Cardinals and NFL games for CBS Radio Network. He was a play-by-play announcer for The NFL on CBS broadcasts in 1985 before switching to color analysis in 1986. In 1987, Dierdorf joined ABC Sports’ Monday Night Football for 12 years, before returning to CBS Sports in 1999.

On the Air

Bob Costas will be pulling double duty at the 2014 Sochi Winter Games, with NBC Olympics announcing that he will serve as host for NBC’s primetime and late night coverage. With the 2014 assignment, Costas becomes U.S. television’s first 10-time Olympic primetime host and will mark the second time that Costas will host both the primetime and late night shows (2000 Sydney Olympics).

While we’re on the talent tangent, Golf Channel is bolstering its own on-air talent lineup next year with the addition of Hall-of-Famer Juli Inkster, seven-year LPGA Tour veteran Paige Mackenzie and 2004 Women’s British Open champion Karen Stupples to its broadcast team. Inkster will work as a course reporter for five LPGA Tour events in 2014, beginning with the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic in May. Mackenzie, meanwhile, will be the new co-host of Morning Drive and offer commentary on Golf Central. Stupples joins as a Golf Channel analyst.

The NFL reports that the league scored the two most-watched shows on TV for the week ending Nov. 17, with NBC’s SNF hitting 26.947 million viewers while FOX’s national telecast anchored by the 49ers/Saints drew 26.940 million fans. For the season, NFL games rank as the 22 most-watched TV shows since Labor Day, up from 17 at this point last season.

WWEand New Jersey Governor Chris Christie announced that WrestleMania 29 generated $101.2 million in economic impact for the New Jersey/New York region last April, according to a study conducted by the Enigma Research Corporation, making the second straight year the event has generated more than $100 million in economic impact for its host city. The study showed that there was $101.2 million of direct, indirect and induced impact derived from spending by non-locals visiting specifically for WrestleMania 29, with  54% of fans attending from outside the area and staying an average of four nights. Next year, WrestleMania 30 will take place Sunday, April 6 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.

ESPN tips off the 30th annual EA SPORTS Maui Invitational with quarterfinal action on Monday, with Arkansas/California at 3p, followed by Minnesota/Syracuse at 5:30p on ESPN2. In addition, Chaminade hosts Baylor at 9:30p on ESPNU while Dayton/Gonzaga runs at midnight on ESPN2. ESPN and ESPN Radio will carry the semifinals on Tuesday at 7p and 9:30p, as well as the championship game on Wednesday at 10p.

Take Cynopsis Media’s Thanksgiving Poll: With Thanksgiving fast approaching, Cynopsis Media is interested in hearing what TV show (past or present) you are most thankful for. One participant will win a $50 Amazon gift card; the winner will be announced on Friday, Nov. 29. Submit your response here–http://ht.ly/qPPQJ. Deadline is in one week!
