TV Everywhere – and forever? Comcast is elbowing its way into the home video market with its new Xfinity TV Store, which lets subscribers buy movies and TV shows that can be streamed as often as they like, on their TV, computer or mobile device. Users can also download programs to a device. The pay TV provider promises titles will be available “weeks before they are available on DVD or for rental.”
There’ll be a familiar voice in Sochi: Bob Costas will anchor NBC‘s primetime coverage of the Olympics for a record tenth time, as well as the net’s late night coverage. Costas has served as primetime anchor at every Olympics on NBC since 1992. The 2014 Winter Games begin Thursday, February 6, 2014.
TiVo announced the results of a study measuring how effective fall season TV promos were in driving tune-in. The winner: ABC‘s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Data from 48,000 TiVo subscribers indicated the premiere was watched by 27 percent of viewers who saw three or more promos for the show, followed by CBS‘s The Crazy Ones (25.3 percent promo conversion rate), Fox‘s Sleepy Hollow (20.4 percent) and Fox‘s Brooklyn Nine-Nine (20.3 percent).
Amazon landed exclusive streaming rights for PBS period drama Mr. Selfridge. “Our Prime customers have an appetite for Masterpiece [Theater], as evidenced by the undeniable success of Downton Abbey – which is the all-time most watched series on Prime Instant Video,” said Amazon’s Director of Digital Video Content Acquisition Brad Beale. Starting Wednesday, Prime Instant Video subscribers could stream Selfridge’s first season.
Destination America is on a “Buying” spree. The net reports season two of Buying Alaska has reached 5.7 million total viewers to date and Buying the Bayou reached 3.1 million viewers its first season, ranking them among DA’s top three series. Now comes Buying Hawaii, about real estate in the 50th state, premiering Monday, December 2 at 10p. Two-parter Buying Log Homes arrives Saturday, December 28, at 10p and 10:30p.
Shonda Rhimes has a book deal. The creator of Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice and Scandal has signed with Simon & Schuster to write a memoir, scheduled for a 2015 release. “I have made a lot of mistakes as a single mother,” said Rhimes, “and I did all of it while running a bunch of TV shows. So I’m going to write about that.”
Anderson Cooper has inked a new agreement that will keep him at CNN through the 2016 presidential election. The anchor’s 8p show, Anderson Cooper 360, is up 28 percent for the year in A25-54, averaging 211,000 viewers.
USA canceled Necessary Roughness. The show debuted to over 4.5 million viewers in 2011, but by the time it ended its third season in August, the sports drama was averaging about 2.5 million.
The NBA announced a deal with Diageo as its exclusive spirits sponsor. Under the agreement, Diageo will promote its Ciroc and Crown Royal brands in TV-ad buys for NBA game telecasts on ABC, ESPN, TNT and NBA TV.
The day after Howard Stern announced on his radio show that he’d made up his mind to return to the America’s Got Talent judge’s panel, NBC announced Heidi Klum, Mel B and Howie Mandel will also be back for the hit summer talent competition, as well as host Nick Cannon. In its eighth season, Talent averaged a 3.3 rating in A18-49 and 12 million total viewers.
What’s the reaction to record-breaking ratings at Hallmark? “Tuning into Hallmark Channel‘s annual programming event, Countdown to Christmas, has become a staple in millions of homes across the country, and for that we are truly thankful,” said Bill Abbott, President and CEO, Crown Media Family Networks. “In just the first three weeks, we have reached over 35 million unduplicated viewers and our two recent original movie premieres, Catch a Christmas Star and The Christmas Ornament, propelled Hallmark Channel to be number 1 in primetime among women 25-54 rating for the entire week.”
New music net Revolt rings in the season with Mary J. Blige, as “The queen of hip-hop soul” offers her take on Christmas classics in a special hosted by Queen Latifah. A Mary Christmas: A Revolt Presentation premieres Thursday, November 28 at 8p, with encores later that night and through the weekend.
MTV‘s Girl Code will call on young people to “GYT” (Get Yourself Tested for HIV and STDs) in a new episode Wednesday, November 27 at 10p. World AIDS Day is December 1.
CBS announced it’s airing back-to-back episodes of The Crazy Ones on Thanksgiving, from 8:31p-10:01.

MundoFox announced that drug lord drama El Capo has begun production on season three, saying it’s the first Spanish-language series to return for a third season on U.S. Spanish-language broadcast television. The Fox Telecolombia production returns in early 2014.
HBO and Starz scored three nominations each for the ASC Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography. Winners will be announced Saturday, February 1.
The Gotham Independent Awards will include a posthumous tribute to James Gandolfini, presented by his Sopranos co-star, Steve Buscemi. The Independent Filmmaker Project event, also honoring Forest Whitaker, Richard Linklater and Katherine Oliver, takes place December 2 in NYC.
Brad Paisley will be on hand to perform, and receive the Video Visionary Award on the American Country Awards. The Fox special airs Tuesday, December 10 at 8p.
Christina Aguilera and A Great Big World join Ariana Grande as performers on the 2013 American Music Awards. The Dick Clark Productions event airs on ABC Sunday, November 24 at 8p.
Joan Rivers and the Fashion Police crew will keep a close eye on the DCP music fest for E!‘s Fashion Police: 2013 American Music Awards. Kelly Osbourne, Giuliana Rancic and Hillary Scott help Joan recap of the best and the worst looks of the big night on Monday, November 25 at 9p and 10p.
Sam Simon, who co-developed Fox‘s The Simpsons, will receive the Animation Writers Caucus Writing Award from the Writers Guild of America West. Simpson’s exec producer Al Jean will present the honor at a ceremony today in LA.
Foyle’s War has been renewed for another three-episode season on U.K.’s ITV. Season eight of the Acorn Productions series, inspired by real events during the Cold War, will be produced by Eleventh Hour Films in Liverpool.
Starz announced that world-renowned dance professionals will be involved in Flesh and Bone, a “dark and gritty” ballet series created by Moira Walley-Beckett (Breaking Bad) in development at the net. Royal New Zealand Ballet artistic director and former dancer Ethan Stiefel is attached as choreographer, joined by former American Ballet Theatre principal dancer Irina Dvorovenko and current soloist Sascha Radetsky. Auditions are underway for the lead.
Laurence Fishburne is attached to star in The Right Mistake, an HBO series in development from the Matrix actor’s Cinema Gypsy Productions and Fox Television Studios, reports Deadline. The drama is based on novels by Walter Mosley featuring the character Socrates Fortlow, an ex-con Fishburne also played in a 1998 HBO movie.

ABC‘s Tuesday special, David Blaine: Real or Magic?, delivered a season high for the net in the 9:30-11p time period, with a 2.6 rating/7 share in A18-49. At 8p, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. saw its first uptick week to week, to 2.4/7 in A18-49.
CW‘s iHeartRadio event with Lady Gaga drew a scant .3/1 rating in A18-49, not a helpful lead-in for Supernatural, down 17 percent to .9/3 on Tuesday.
Discovery Channel‘s Fast N’ Loud earned the top spot in cable on Monday among Men, excluding sports, for the fifth week. The show’s 9p episode scored ratings of 1.95 in M25-54 and 1.78 M18-49, and delivered an average 2.22 million viewers P2+.
Tuesday A18-49 Analysis: CBS got the most A18-49 viewers with 2.5/7, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. The net’s NCIS won at 8p with 3.0/9, followed by 2.4/7 for ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. NBC’s The Voice drew 3.2/9 to top the 9p hour, versus 2.5/7 for CBS’s NCIS: Los Angeles. At 10p, ABC’s David Blaine: Real or Magic? led with 2.7/8, versus 2.0/6 for CBS’s Person of Interest.
