Good morning. It’s Thursday, November 1, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

The NBA was forced to postpone tonight’s game between the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets at the $1 billion Barclays Center, which was initially set for 7p on TNT, due to conditions caused by Hurricane Sandy. TNT announced that the network will instead offer two hours of The Mentalist, before hitting the NBA Tip-Off presented by Autotrader.com pre-game show at 9p followed by the Thunder/Spurs game at 9:30.

On the Air

Friday’s Knicks game is still a go however. ESPN tips off its 2012-13 NBA regular-season schedule tomorrow night with Heat/Knicks at 8p, followed by Lakers/Clippers at 10:30p. Mike Breen will provide commentary for the first game of the doubleheader with analyst Jeff Van Gundy and reporter Doris Burke. In the nightcap, Mike Tirico and analyst Hubie Brown will call the game with Chris Broussard reporting. The new-look KIA NBA Countdown pre- will debut ahead of the games at 7p with Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Bill Simmons, Jalen Rose and Michael Wilbon. In addition, ESPN confirmed reports Flip Saunders and Antonio Davis are joining the network in multi-year agreements where they will l serve as NBA studio analysts contributing to Sports Center, NBA Coast to Coast, NBA Tonight and more.

The NFL and Nielsen announced that the FOX national NFL telecast (which mostly featured that N.Y. Giants/Dallas Cowboys game) ranked the most watched TV program for the week ending Oct. 28 with 26.9 million viewers. This marks the eighth time in eight weeks that an NFL game has topped the viewership charts. Top markets for NFL action for the week included New Orleans with a 47.7/59, followed by Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Denver and Kansas City.

ESPN confirmed that Chris Berman is slated to conduct halftime interviews with both Presidential Candidates Barack Obama and Mitt Romney on election eve next week for MNF. The game will pit the Saints and Eagles on Nov. 5 at 8:30p.

SPEED is expanding its programming slate for the upcoming Grand Prix of the United States, the penultimate event on the 2012 FIA Formula One World Championship circuit. Live coverage of the race will take place on Nov. 18 at 1:30p from Austin. Bob Varsha hosts with analysis from David Hobbs and Steve Matchett, and pit reporting from Will Buxton. SPEED’s live coverage of the inaugural event from the newly built Circuit of the Americas starts Friday, Nov. 16 with the opening practice session at 11a.

NASCAR is set to become the subject of ESPN SportsCenter anchor Hannah Storm’s Face-to-Face series on Tuesday. The special will feature Storm offering a conversation and look into the lives of NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers Jimmie Johnson, Brad Keselowski, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Tony Stewart at 8p.

This week marks the 10-year anniversary of ESPN’s Around the Horn with host Tony Reali. ATH will celebrate its 10 years on Friday, Nov. 2 at 5p on ESPN with Reali joined by a group of panelists expected to include show regulars JA Adande, Kevin Blackistone, Tim Cowlishaw, Israel Gutierrez, Bomani Jones, Jackie MacMullan, Woody Paige, Bill Plaschke, Bob Ryan and Michael Smith.

UFC officials announced that the MMA promotion will once again offer a card for Super Bowl weekend from Las Vegas. The event, UFC 156, takes place Feb. 2, will pit UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo against Frankie Edgar. The duo was initially slated meet at UFC 153 in Rio de Janeiro until Aldo had to withdraw due to an injury.

NASCARteam owner Rick Hendrick, along with his current drivers and some of his past drivers will gather to reflect on Hendrick Motorsports’ road to a milestone 200 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victories in a one-hour special set to air on SPEED on Nov. 11 at 8p. The special, dubbed Beyond 200: The Hendrick Motorsports Story, is produced by NASCAR Productions and features the likes of Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Kasey Kahne as well as past drivers Geoff Bodine, Terry Labonte, Ken Schrader and Darrell Waltrip.

The 4th Annual All Sports Film Festival announced that a documentary film by HBO’s Real Sports correspondent Jon Frankel, American Man, will make its west coast premiere at the fest. The documentary deals with “the continuing saga of concussions in the NFL and their devastating result.” The festival will screen 56 films from 10 countries.

The Professional Bull Riders announced a three-year sponsorship renewal that will keep the PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals in Las Vegas through 2015. The city has been the home of the Finals since 1994.

General Mills announced that Cheerios is getting back in the NASCAR circuit next year, inking a partnership with Richard Childress Racing to serve as the primary sponsor for six races in 2013 and as a major associate sponsor for the rest of the season with the No. 31 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team and driver Jeff Burton.

The New York Yankees joined in on relief plans from the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy with a donation of $500,000 to the American Red Cross for the benefit of residents throughout the Tri-State area.

ESPN is taking video game Halo 4 to a new level today, with the launch of the first-ever Halo 4 Bowl on ESPN2 at 5p. Featuring the likes of Victor Cruz, Ramses Barden and Terrell Thomas squaring off against Rob Gronkowski, Wes Welker and Donald Thomas, the battle will take place as part of a special one-hour episode of SportsNation with a best-of-three showdown.
