Good morning. It’s Thursday, November 17, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing. Lost Video Diaries are 20m original episodes, not aired on television, that will soon be available for your mobile – called mobisodes. According to Hollywood Reporter, the Lost mobisodes are currently being filmed in Hawaii, all in preparation for a cellular deal that has not yet been announced, but is expected to break shortly. And it’s interesting to note the original mobisodes are not being produced by ABC or Touchstone Television who produce the on-air series, but rather by the show’s executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse are overseeing the effort. Two new characters will be introduced in the Diaries mobisodes, each with their own story lines, and while the characters are not mentioned in the primetime broadcast episodes, the goings on in primetime will direct the goings on in mobisodes. NBC takes it all back. Just last week the network ordered up six additional episodes of its feel-good reality series Three Wishes (Fridays at 9p), and yesterday they un-ordered. According to Variety, the reason could be twofold: CBS’ success with its recently rescheduled Close to Home improving their Friday night lineup and airing opposite Three Wishes, as well as NBC being in cutting-cost mode as a result of the season to date delivering less-than-hoped-for ratings. What does this ultimately mean for Three Wishes? The network has not said one way or the other, but what may be most telling is a quote in Variety from the show’s executive producer Andrew Glassman who refers to the show in the past tense: “It was a quality show that was scheduled at the wrong time”, tho he also holds out hope the remaining episodes will earn another order for more eps. New ABC Monday Night post-Football schedule, effective January 9, 2006: Tonight’s Premiere: * MORE GOOD STUFF *According to information from the Broadcast Cable Financial Management Assoc (BCFM) on numbers from Ernst & Young, the big three broadcasters were down 21.5% in third quarter in sales revenue as compared to 2004; and down by 8.3% for the first nine months of 2005. Total net revenues of $2.2 billion for the third quarter are off $605 million from last year. Without the benefit of the Summer Olympics this year, the biggest drop was in sports advertising, down $707 million year to year. Those categories that were up year to year were primetime (+8.5%) and mornings (+6%). Nick at Nite has ordered a second season of Hi-Jinks, its hidden-camera series with parents playing pranks on their kids, ordering 13 new episodes. The series will be produced by Stone & Company Ent, and hosted by Leila Sbitani. In its first six weeks on the air, Hi-Jinks’ A18-49 audience scared up a 0.5 rating, and 532,000 viewers, a time period increase of 36% vs. last year. Anderson Cooper 360 debuted on CNN in its new time period at 10p replacing NewsNight, and in its first week ending November 13, the show averaged 593,000 viewers. That’s down 27% from NewsNight’s October average when both Anderson Cooper and Aaron Brown co-anchored NewsNight. Anderson Cooper 360 dropped a third of its lead-in audience from Larry King, and is also down by 13% as compared to its own previous 7p time period. SCI FI Channel has renewed its original series Battlestar Galatica for a third season. Production on the 20-episode order is slated to begin in Vancouver in February 2006 for premiere later in the year. The entire cast returns for the new season, including Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Katee Sackhoff, Jamie Bamber, James Callis, Tricia Helfer and Grace Park. Also returning are executive producer and writer Ronald D. Moore and executive producer David Eick. This is pretty cool – the NBC series Medium’s November 21st episode can be seen in 3-D (with those great cardboard special glasses, distributed by NBC via countless places including TV Guide). But that’s not the cool part, although it may be. The cool part is the show’s introduction starring from beyond the grave Rod Serling who explains the 3-D aspect, and instructs viewers when to put on their glasses, and assures those without that they too can enjoy the episode. Serling will re-appear midway thru in 3-D, though always in black and white. Producers grabbed and altered an opening sequence from Twilight Zone to create the :45-second appearance, at the okay of Serling’s estate and his wife, Carol. MTV‘s finale of Laguna Beach delivered a 5.1 P12-34 rating, was the show’s highest rated episode for the entire season. According to MTV, the show was also the most watched telecast for the night in the P12-24 demo across all television, including the broadcast networks. Bruce David Klein, President of Atlas Media Corp. announced the passing of Steven M. Friedman, SVP/Production, on November 15, 2005. The entire staff of Atlas mourns this great loss, and extends its deepest sympathy to his wife Jennifer and family. Funeral services will take place at 11:45a tomorrow, Friday, November 18 at Riverside Memorial Chapel, 180 West 76th Street, NY, NY 10023. BBC Worldwide has inked a first-look 3-year deal for scripted series in the U.S. with Sony Pictures Television. As part of the agreement, Sony Pictures will have the first option to adapt BBC scripted comedy and drama formats for the U.S. NBC Universal Global Networks has signed on with A&E Television Networks to partner on a joint venture to own and operate The History Channel in Germany. AETN first launched the channel in the country one year ago. Time Warner Cable of New York and New Jersey will begin carrying ImaginAsian Entertainment, Inc.‘s ImaginAsian TV (iaTV) as of today, on channel 560. Although iaTV is headquartered in New York City, this will be the first time the head office will be able to locally tune in to iaTV. Future plans between iaTV and TWC include additional VOD services. Time Warner in NYC will add 15 hours of Oxygen content to its VOD lineup starting today, all part of a long-term carriage deal the two. In a special launch deal, Oxygen will offer their original film Romancing the Bride on the VOD service starting November 25th, one week before it premieres on the network. Other content will include programming from Oxygen’s Oh Baby VOD network as well as 80 songs from its Air Karaoke VOD network. Correction: Who’d’ve thunk it?! Regis Philbin is headlining New Year’s Eve not for ABC, but for FOX! I know, I know, that’s where Ryan Seacrest was before, so the unanswered question is obvious: what happened to Seacrest? Simple – he’s hosting ABC’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve special along with Dick Clark. Regis’ Fox special New Year’s Eve Live airs on December 31 from 11p-1230a (and tape delayed on the west coast). Yo! College Students! The December 1 issue of Cynopsis: Weekender will be entirely dedicated to and written by you guys on the topic of television. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a journalism or communications major, or just like to write. You’ve seen enough television to have formed an opinion or two about the medium, about the shows, about its future, what you liked about its past. Make it funny, or serious, poignant or silly. Whatever TV topic strikes your whim! Of all the stories submitted, only three or four will be chosen to be used in the December 1 edition, and those authors will be paid a buck a word (maximum of 350 words). Deadline is November 23. Submit your stories to me at Pay attention now – this is important: Once again, Virgin Mobile is proving that everyone is fair game. The Chrismahanukwanzakah ads are back on television, radio and the internet this month. The multicultural and politically incorrect spots feature a Dreidel Song rendition by Jewish twins and a Silent Chrismahanukwanzakah Night by a Hindu Santa. MTV and mtvU will air the Carols spot while BET, Cartoon Network (Adult Swim), Comedy Central, FX, MTV, mtvU, The N and Spike will air The Help Line. Oh, this year a toll-free help line manned by a Jew, a Hindu Santa, a gay elf and a Kwanzaa customer service rep will be able to help you with your Chrismahanukwanzakah gift dilemmas. The number is 1-888-ELF-POOP. * NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *The Golf Channel has announced another new reality series – this time cameras will be trained on the life of golfer John Daly, in the original series The Daly Planet. The show is set to debut on January 18. To golfers, John Daly is not only an extraordinarily talented player – who has won two major championships and typically ranks at the top of the PGA in driving distance – but he is also a man who struggles with a variety of his own demons. Hopefully, this show will find him on an up-swing. Danny Devito will join the cast of FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia next season. He will co-star in the next which is slated to begin its second season this June. * EXECUTIVE MOVES *Larry Gerbrandt has joined Nielsen Entertainment as SVP/Senior Corporate Analyst, reporting to Andy Wing, President and CEO. Among his first initiatives is Benchmarking the Digital Household from Nielsen Entertainment Reports, which explores a broad range of penetration benchmarks for how the American household uses media, entertainment, information technologies, and services. Larry will utilize Nielsen Entertainment’s Actionable Entertainment Intelligence (AEI), the cross-section of data sets from Nielsen’s consulting and measurement businesses, to produce strategy-minded analyses on many of the complex questions facing entertainment executives today. Christina Wayne has joined AMC as VP/Scripted Series and Movies. In her new position, she will lead the production and development of AMC’s first-ever mini-series, newly titled Broken Trail. Domestic Cable Distribution Source: NTI Explorer, US Rtg, Season Premiere To Date (9/19-11/13/05 vs. 9/20-11/14/04). CYNTHIA TURNER’S Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 16, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing. The report from the Corporation of Public Broadcasting‘s Inspector General Kenneth Konz reveals that former CPB Chairman, Kenneth Tomlinson violated the ethics of the office he held in hiring Patricia Harrison, former co-chairperson of the Republican National Committee, as the new CPB President and CEO. Stepping even further into the murky waters of unethical behavior, Konz writes in his report that Tomlinson, “violated his fiduciary responsibilities and statutory prohibitions against Board member involvement in programming decisions” in his participation in the development of The Journal Editorial Report, a public affairs program. In addition Konz’s report reproached Tomlinson for making decisions and moves without the consultation of the CPB Board of Directors when he ordered the monitoring of public TV and radio programs, including Now with Bill Moyers and The Diane Rehm Show. However, the report vindicated Tomlinson for hiring two ombudsmen for the CPB as well as his using a Bush White House staff member to write a press release and draft talking points regarding the hiring of those ombudsmen. Also included in Inspector General Konz’s report was a statement from Tomlinson stating that he was “disappointed, but not surprised,” by the findings. CYNTHIA TURNER’S Good morning. Discovery Health Channel has set December 27 at 8p for the premiere of a new original weekly series Dr. Know, starring Dr. Paul Trotman, a real doctor (not just one on TV). Dr. Trotman is a New Zealand native and in each episode will disprove, discredit and debunk medical and health myths, folk tales and not to tru-isms. Dr. Know is produced by Discovery Prod Group. PBS has ordered up a 4th season of History Detective, set to premiere next summer, from Oregon Public Broadcasting and UK’s Lion Television. History Detectives combines forensic technology and detective work to find out more about family legends, stories behind potentially extraordinary object in normal American homes, cities and towns. CNBC is launching a global 2-hour daily business news program with anchors in New York, London and Singapore. The show (thus far without an official title), is set to launch on December 19 replacing Wake-Up Call, and will utilize CNBC, CNBC Europe and CNBC Asia resources. It will focus on international trend analysis, global investments and live reports from key global financial centers. The broadcast will be anchored by Michelle Caruso-Cabrera in New York, Ross Westgate in London and Christine Tan in Singapore. Jeremy Pink, CNBC’s VP/International News and Programming, will run the program. Also Squawk Box will get a new set of anchors with Becky Quick and Carl Quintanilla, with editor Joel Kernen. And Mark Haines will anchor an additional hour of from 9-10a with David Faber called Squawk on the Street. And changes at MSNBC with the cancellation of Connected Coast to Coast, and weekend series MSNBC at the Movies and MSNBC Entertainment Hot List. While no official announcements on what will replace each of these series, we do know the new Maury Povich/Connie Chung weekend series will show up on the schedule on Saturday morning as of January 7 at 10a, and repeating on Sunday mornings. It just seems that whenever ABC re-discovers they have Regis Philbin in the house (which they seem to forget from time to time), they suddenly put him everywhere. Regis is still headlining his morning talk show with Kelly Ripa, and has recently been named the new host of the special series This is Your Life, and now will also return to host New Year’s Rockin’ Eve to drop the ball in New York’s Times Square. Note to self: Gabriel Byrne just doesn’t do enough primetime TV. Isn’t there someone you can talk to about that?
