Guys get a shot at some attention when Style Media’s new docu-series Built premieres January 28 at 9p following the season five premiere of Jerseylicious at 8p. Built follows high-fashion male models as they remodel homes. The series, produced by Endemol USA features a Manhattan home design and construction service staffed exclusively with male models who are also experienced handymen.
TV Land renewed first season comedy The Soul Man starring Cedric the Entertainer for a second season. Cedric tweeted the news Tuesday to his followers. The Soul Man, a spinoff series created by Hot in Cleveland showrunner Suzanne Martin, stars Cedric as an R&B superstar-turned-preacher who retires to St. Louis to become the preacher at his father’s church.
The season two premiere of National Geographic Channel’s series Doomsday Preppers on Tuesday at 9p became the highest new season debut in the channel’s 11-year history. The opening episode averaged a 1.0 rating and 863,000 with A25-54 and delivered 1.3 million total viewers.

Distribution company Mance Media has sold more than 100 hours of programming following MIPCOM to European and Asian broadcasters. Cirque Berzerk to Sky Arts-UK; Bikini Destinations to Telemedi TV Geogia and to Doruk Film-Turkey; Billabongg’s J Bay to New Zealand Airlines; and Fit Nation to Ananey Communications-Israel and to Antena TV-Romania. In addition, Bombridge International, Mance Media’s sub-distributor for Asia has licensed the television rights for Fit Nation to Thailand, the Philippines and Singapore as well as IPTV, mobile and VOD rights in Singapore to Mediacorp.
A sci-fi drama, Saga has been picked up by ABC from Andrew Miller (The Secret Circle). Miller will write and serve as EP on the project about an author of a best-selling series like Twilight who turns up missing before she can complete the final installment of her epic fantasy saga. A family of fans discovers she has been kidnapped into the real world of her books and they attempt to rescue her. Amblin Television’s Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank are involved as EPs along with Full Fathom Five’s James Frey and Todd Cohen. ABC Studios is producing.
The Weather Channel has approved the new series, Deadliest Space Weather, a new program that explores extreme weather conditions that happen throughout our solar system. The series also asks the question: What would happen if these harsh conditions occurred on Earth? The Weather Channel okayed six half-hour episodes from Flight 33 and the series will bow in January 2013. The network recently announced it is moving forward on the environmental and science-focused series, Tipping Points which is set to premiere in October 2013 which examines the Earth’s changing climate system.
HGTV is adding a third series to its future lineup highlighting hosts and twin brothers, Jonathan Scott and Drew Scott. The duo will next star in the one-hour home renovation competition series, Brother vs. Brother that pits Jonathan, a licensed contractor and Drew, a real estate agent against each other as they each mentor a six-person team of home improvement experts battling for a grand prize of $50,000. The series is currently in production and is slated to premiere in August 2013. The Scott brothers also host Property Brothers and Buying & Selling for HGTV.
3net Studios, the joint venture between Sony, Discovery and IMAX unveiled its initial slate of original 3D and 4K TV series and specials to be produced at the new studio. Project on the 3net Studios development and production slate include:
- Space, described as the world’s first native 4K project for TV, the hour-long three-part series will take viewers from the Big Bang to the present and forward into the future. A 3net Studios original production in association with Percolate Digital.
- Marksmen is a 3D stop-motion graphic novel series that takes viewers into a post-apocalyptic wasteland about two cities that fight for control of the world’s scarce resources. A 3net Studios original production in association with Jump! 3D.
- Frozen in Time: Our History in 3D is a three-part, one-hour original 3D series that takes an expansive look at history’s most important milestones from the migration of the American West to the Industrial Revolution to WWII. A 3net Studios original production in association with Tom Jennings Productions/1895 Films.
- Wingsuit Warrior: Jeb Corliss vs. The World focuses attention on world-famous BASE jumper and wingsuit pioneer, Jeb Corliss who crashed while wingsuit flying in Capetown, South Africa. The one-hour special follows Jeb as he goes through hard rehab working with wingsuit expert Joby Ogwyn. A 3net Studios original production in association with New Wave Entertainment.
- Daydream is described as a travel adventure offering stunning visual 3D imagery looking at the earth and mankind’s most spectacular creations. Produced by Z3D Films, a wholly-owned subsidiary of 3net Studios.
Grace Gummer, daughter of Meryl Streep landed a role on HBO’s drama Newsroom during season two. Gummer, whose sister Mamie Gummer stars in The CW’s Emily Owens, M.D., will play Hallie Shea, a reporter who is embedded with the Mitt Romney campaign.
USA Network’s drama pilot, based on Elmore Leonard’s short story, When the Women Come Out to Dance has cast its lead characters. Bryan Greenberg (How to Make it America) and Stephanie Sigman (Mill Bala). The plot is about a Miami business man, Billy who toys with the idea of running for political office and tries to increase his chances of being elected by marrying a Columbian woman who is on the run from her troubled past. The marriage of convenience quickly escalates into much more when Billy discovers his new wife is good at “fixing” any problem that corrupt South Miami political scene throws at him.

Tuesday A18-49 Analysis: NBC won by a slim margin Tuesday night among A18-49 at 2.6/7, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, NBC’s The Voice rocked in first place at 3.9/11 and CBS’ NCIS came next at 3.1/9. CBS took over at 9p with NCIS: Los Angeles at 2.8/7 and NBC’s comedies Go On and The New Normal trailed at an average rating of 2.0/6. Ratings swung back to NBC’s favor during 10p as Parenthood topped with a 1.9/5 followed by CBS’ Vegas at 1.6/5.

Original Productions (OP), behind such series as Deadliest Catch, Ice Road Truckers, Ax Men and more promoted Philip Segal to CEO/Executive Producer and Jeff Conroy was named President/Executive Producer. Philip replaces Thom Beers, who was recently appointed CEO of OP parent company FremantleMedia North America and Original Productions’ Chairman.
Starz Entertainment appointed Michael Vamosy as SVP/Creative Services to supervise the design, development and implementation of all creative content to support the company’s programming, marketing, and sales strategies including STARZ Original series. Michael will be based at company headquarters in Englewood, CO.
Christopher Herbert was added at The Weather Company as VP/Strategy and Product Operations for the company’s digital unit. Previously, Christopher worked with Bloomberg Media where he was head of special projects. In his new role at TWC, he will oversee strategy development and execution for the product business including weather.com, mobile and tablet apps as well as Weather Underground. Christopher will report to Cameron Clayton, President/Digital.
Effective December 1, NBC Today show Senior Broadcast Producer Don Nash will advance to Executive Producer of the morning show. Steve Capus, President, NBC News made the announcement yesterday. In this role, Don succeeds former Today EP Jim Bell who was named EP of NBCUniversal’s Olympic Coverage. Don will report to Alexandra Wallace who has been named Executive in Charge of the Today show and she continues to report to Steve Capus.
