21st Century Fox signed on for the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games where the company will serve as a Founding Partner of the event, which will be held June 14-21, 2014. The company will become Official Presenting Media Sponsor and offer exposure for the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games across its U.S. channels which include FOX News Channel, FOX Business Network, FOX Broadcasting, FOX Sports, FX, National Geographic Channel, and 28 local stations, as well as FOX Sports 1, which will air a one-hour recap special.
ESPN scored its second most-viewed non-conference game ever with the battle of the top two teams in Michigan State and Kentucky on Tuesday. The telecast averaged 4,002,000 viewers and a 2.6 household rating, according to Nielsen. Meanwhile the other part of the doubleheader, pitting Kansas and Duke, drew 2,977,000 viewers and a 2.1.
The U.S. Olympic Committee CEO Scott Blackmun inked a contract extension that runs through the 2016 Olympics, according to the AP. His new deal reportedly includes a base salary bump of 10% to $550,000, while eliminating “long-term incentive bonuses.” The USOC board approved Blackmun’s new contract last month.
Maria Sharapova, is heading to the Olympics as a member of Team NBC. The famed winner of four Grand Slam singles crowns will join NBC Olympics for its Winter Games coverage in Sochi where she will serve as a correspondent offering insight and commentary on Russia’s first Winter Olympics. “Maria transcends sports as one of the world’s most recognizable stars,” said Jim Bell, Executive Producer of NBC Olympics. “Growing up in Sochi until she was six years old and with family and friends still living in the area, Maria will offer a unique and personal perspective on a place she knows so well.”
CNN named Golf Channel’s Lara Baldesarra as the anchor of World Sport, the staple sports news program on CNN International. She will also contribute to sports-driven coverage across all CNN platforms. Baldesarra previously anchored Golf Central as served as host of the weekly interview show, Grey Goose 19th Hole.
After a 16-year playing career, Mark DeRosa is coming to MLB Network where he will work as a studio analyst for the channel. DeRosa previously served as a guest analyst during the 2013 and 2011 Postseasons, and will now appear across MLB Network’s studio programming and make his debut on MLB Tonight on Monday, December 9.
Mike Tyson will join Jim Lampley to co-host HBO’s slate of entertainment and boxing programming on Saturday night. Presentations will include the network debut of HBO Films’ Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth at 8p, followed by an all-new episode of 24/7 Pacquiao/Rios and a World Championship Boxing super middleweight title showdown.
FOX Sports reports that through last Friday’s race at Phoenix, the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series on FOX Sports 1 is up 3% in household rating compared to the same 10 races that aired on SPEED last season with a 0.64 vs. 0.62. In addition, total viewership is up 11% (729,000 vs. 657,000) through the equivalent dates last year.
Tonight, CBS Sports Network debuts Marching On: 1963 Army-Navy Remembered, a documentary that spotlights the football game played between Army and Navy on Dec. 7, 1963, 15 days after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The one-hour special airs at 8p.
Tuesday night’s Rangers/Devils game on MSG Network ranked as the top-rated sports event for the day among Men 25-54 in New York, registering a 2.29 rating, according to Nielsen. The telecast set a season high mark among Men 25-54 (2.29), Adults 25-54 (1.41) as well as households (1.82).
RIP to Todd Christensen, who reportedly died on Wednesday during morning surgery at a hospital in Utah. The Salt Lake Tribune writes that he had been fighting liver disease and other serious illnesses in recent years. The former tight end was a five-time Pro Bowler and two-time Super Bowl champion. He was also a television sports analyst. Outside of his on-field football career, Christensen served as an on-air analyst for the likes of NBC and, more recently, the Mountain.

The NY/NJ Super Bowl Host Committee announced a partnership with are hospitals – Hackensack University Health Network, Hospital for Special Surgery, and New York-Presbyterian Hospital to serve as Official Health Services Providers for the Host Committee. The three hospitals will offer comprehensive care to the local community and the thousands of visitors traveling to the region for Super Bowl XLVIII.

Sports & entertainment brand consultancy & creative agency Troika hired Damon Haley to oversee its sports division as Account Director. In his new role, Haley is charged with leading Troika’s sports practice through strategic business development, account management, financial planning, and market insights and analysis. Haley previously served as Managing Partner at UMCA Sports & Entertainment, where he acted as Chief Strategist for Nike campaigns throughout the U.S., China, and Brazil.
Active lifestyle sports media and event entertainment company Competitor Group, Inc. brought in Bill Pedigo to serve as the Chief Revenue Officer for the company. There, he will spearhead CGI’s sales and sponsorship division, including the company’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series. He previously spent the past eight years selling sponsorship as Senior VP, Corporate Sales for AEG’s Global Partnerships division.
