Yesterday the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences said Eddie Murphy has decided to not host the upcoming 84th Academy Awards.  Murphy’s decision comes soon after his creative partner, Brett Ratner pulled out as producer of the Academy Awards following fallout from the inflammatory remark made by Ratner over the weekend.  In a statement Murphy said, “First and foremost I want to say that I completely understand and support each party’s decision with regard to a change of producers for this year’s Academy Awards ceremony. I was truly looking forward to being a part of the show that our production team and writers were just starting to develop, but I’m sure that the new production team and host will do an equally great job.”  The Academy Awards will be televised live by ABC from the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center on February 26.

Brian Grazer has signed on now produce the Oscars telecast replacing Brett Ratner.  Grazer is a producer of the new film, J Edgar from director Clint Eastwood releasing this Friday.  Now all we need is a new Oscars host … stay tuned.

On the same day it televised the 45th Annual CMA Awards, ABC announced it has extended its broadcast deal with the Country Music Association by ten more years through 2021.  The renewed agreement encompasses the CMA Awards, The CMA Festival: Country’s Night to Rock and the CMA Country Christmas special.  ABC will air this year’s CMA Country Christmas on December 1.

Transitioning from online to television, MYX TV debuts a new comedy, The Timothy DeLaGhetto Show featuring the YouTube stand-up comic Timothy DeLaGhetto (aka Traphik).  The 30m show opens this month and airs on Tuesdays at 10p on MYX TV, an Asian American entertainment and lifestyle cable network.  The show will offer off-beat skits and sketches, original songs and music videos as well as stand-up comedy from multi-talented DeLaGhetto who also is a rapper, actor, writer, designer and an in-the-shower-singer as well as comedian.

TV viewers will soon get to know an intimate side of recording artist T.I. when the new VH1 series, T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle premieres December 5 at 9p.  The series will delve into the private moments of T.I.’s life when he reunites with his wife, Tameka (aka Tiny) and his children after he served a 12-month prison sentence.  The series is from 51 Minds.

Season two of Portlandia opens on IFC January 6 at 10p.  When the new season returns in January, several more guest stars will join the regular cast members including Isaac Brock, Steve Jones, Johnny Marr, Joanna Newsom, Eddie Vedder and Annie Clark.

On Wednesday, the FCC conducted its first-ever Nationwide EAS test and early reports from the 2p test alert indicate that the signal aired in most of the US but not in other areas.  The test was designed and implemented to reveal problems and the FCC said in a statement, “The Nationwide EAS Test served the purpose for which it was intended to identify gaps and generate a comprehensive set of data to help strengthen our ability to communicate during real emergencies. Based on preliminary data, large regions of the country received the test but some areas did not. We are currently in the process of collecting and analyzing data, and will reach a conclusion when that process is complete.” The FCC will analyze data received from more than 30,000 participants including broadcast TV and radio stations, cable operators and other MVPDs.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Adding more original productions to its development slate, Syfy has three new scripted projects in the works:

  • Unt. Robert H. Wolfe Project – From executive producer/writer Robert H. Wolfe, this series opens after decades of war and centers on the newly-formed Unity Democracy that orders humans and trans-humans to lead the Starship Defender on an expedition to search for lost worlds needing law and order. Produced by Universal Cable Productions.
  • Seeing Things (wt) – A cop becomes a ghost following his violent death and the only person who can help close his last case is a socially-awkward man who realizes what he has thought were hallucinations all his life may not be figments of his imagination after all.  Produced by Fox Television Studios.
  • Ghost Projekt – Based on a popular comic series, a female KGB agent and a male American weapons inspector form a partnership when a deadly force is unknowingly unleashed from a Siberian research facility.  Produced by CBS TV Studios.

Production on a sophomore season of Fairly Legal starring Sarah Shahi has begun in Vancouver.  USA Network will premiere the second season in the US next spring and outside the US, Fairly Legal’s second season will launch across Universal Network International’s roster of channels.  Universal Cable Productions produces the series.

UK’s ITV2 commissioned Kinetic Content in association with STV Productions, GroupM Entertainment and The Collective to produce a new celebrity-centric series starring Perez Hilton.  The series, Perez Hilton Super Fan will follow the celebrity blogger and TV personality as he gains up-close access to a different global superstar each week.  ITV2 has ordered four one-hour episodes to start which will debut on ITV2 in December.  Kinetic will further be shopping the series to US networks in the coming weeks.  Perez Hilton Super Fan will launch worldwide via international distributor, DRG.  In the opening episode, Hilton will interview Lady Gaga.

The CW’s The Vampire Diaries tagged Persia White (Girlfriends) as Abby Bennett, the mother of Bonnie (Kat Graham).   White will first appear in episode #312 and her role is recurring.  Abby’s character is described as a beautiful but troubled woman who is weighed down by her past secrets that led her to abandon Bonnie.

The remake of Dallas on TNT has cast Carlos Bernard (24) in a recurring role.  Bernard will be seen in the series’ early episodes playing a suave Venezuelan businessman who is making a deal with J.R. Ewing (Larry Hagman).  Bernard can be currently seen all season on CBS’ CSI: Miami.

Casting Call: Showtime’s unscripted series The Real L Word, which was recently renewed for a third season, is seeking more cast members for its ensemble in the new season.  Production begins soon on season three in New York and Los Angeles.  The casting producers are looking for women on both coasts with appealing stories to tell.  Please send an email to: [email protected] and include your name, phone number and a paragraph description about yourself.  In the subject line, please include “Real L Word 3” and your city and state.
