Good morning. It’s Thursday, May 9, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
The San Francisco 49ers locked in the third-largest naming rights deal in American sports history, agreeing to a deal with Levi Strauss & Co for a $220 million, 20-year naming rights deal for the team’s new $1.2 billion, 68,500-seat Santa Clara stadium starting in 2014. The venue will reportedly be called Levi’s Stadium and the proposal will be submitted to the Santa Clara Stadium Authority for final approval today.
Congratulations to all the Emmy winners from Tuesday’s ceremony. NBC Sports Group walked away with the biggest haul with 11 Sports Emmy Awards, taking home wins for the London Olympics, Super Bowl XLVII, and Sunday Night Football, while Bob Costas, Al Michaels, Cris Collinsworth and Pierre McGuire were all honored in their respective categories. Other multiple winners included HBO, NBC Sports Network, ESPN, MLB Network, TBS, TNT and NFL Media.
ESPN slated its matchups for the 15th annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge Presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, set for Dec. 3-4. ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU will combine to televise all 12 games with all 12 Big Ten teams and 12 of the 15 ACC teams participating in the 2013 Challenge. The action starts Tuesday, Dec. 3, with game that include Indiana/Syracuse, Michigan/Duke; Notre Dame/Iowa; Florida State/Minnesota; Penn state/Pittsburgh and Illinois/Georgia Tech. Wednesday’s games will see North Carolina/Michigan State, Maryland/Ohio State; Miami/Nebraska, Wisconsin/Virginia, Boston College/Purdue and Northwestern/NC State.
FOX Sports is set to carry the final of the FA Cup this weekend, marking the first time the event will be carried on broadcast television. On Saturday, Manchester City and Wigan face off live on FOX starting at noon with play-by-play announcer Gus Johnson calling the action and analysis from Ian Wright. FOX Soccer’s Rob Stone, Eric Wynalda, Warren Barton and Brian McBride will break down all the FA Cup Final action live from the Los Angeles studios. Following the FA Cup Final, FOX Sports presents a special UEFA Champions League Final preview, The Road to Wembley at 2:30p.
The Atlantic 10 Conference welcomed its newest member, announcing that Davidson College is leaving the Southern Conference and will join the league starting July 1, 2014. Davidson joins George Mason to the conference as the newest additions made this year.
If you missed Saturday’s bout between Floyd Mayweather and Robert Guererro on PPV, Showtime will reair the fight on Saturday along with Abner Mares’ win over Daniel Ponce de Leon at 9p.
Outdoor Channel wraps up Jack Link’s Major League Fishing tonight at 9p, with only six anglers left form the original 24. The winner of the GEICO Challenge Cup will be crowned from Lake Istokpoga, Florida.
Roster Moves
ESPN named Aaron Taylor as Senior Vice President, Marketing. Taylor will be charged with developing and managing all aspects of the ESPN brand, including domestic television, digital (mobile, online, social media), radio and print media assets, as well as building upon the company’s creative that includes the This is SportsCenter campaign.
After SI reported earlier this week that NFL Network producers Kent Camera and Bardia Shah-Rais were leaving the channel for the upcoming Fox Sports 1, the duo will find some familiar faces at their new home. Geordie Wimmer is leaving his role as Senior Director at NFL Network-where he directed NFL Total Access for the past three years-to become Coordinating Studio Director at Fox Sports 1. David Faller is joining FS1 as Senior Director after directing NFL GameDay Morning last year. In addition, Spandan Daftary (who produced NFL GameDay Morning) is also joining FS1, where he could be positioned to produce Fox Football Daily. A spokesperson at FOX Sports would not comment on the additions.

UCLA Athletics and the Rose Bowl now have an official airport, with Bob Hope Airport in Burbank agreeing to a three year marketing deal. The deal will include signage at the stadium, as well as a special logo, and promotion on the video board during UCLA football games, according to local reports.
WWE entered a multi-year agreement with toy manufacturer The Bridge Direct to develop and market construction toys based on WWE events and characters, marking the first for WWE in the construction toy category. The toys are targeted to WWE fans between the ages of 4 and 14 and offer figures, accessories, and construction bricks to “build your own” playsets. The toys are expected to begin rolling out next spring.
La Liga President Javier Tebas presented beIN Sport Managing Director Yousef Al-Obaidly the Friends of Spain Award for its in-depth and outstanding television coverage of the Spanish soccer league. The awards presentation marked the first ever in the U.S. after previous ceremonies in China, Russia and the U.K.
Electronic Arts extended its deal with FIFA through Dec. 31, 2022, according to Digital Spy, to continue developing games using the brand, and offering exclusive access to events such as the World Cup and FIFA Interactive Cup. FIFA 13 sold 7.4 million copies in its first four weeks on sale.
Bexel purchased two Dreamcatcher systems from Evertz designed to serve as a “cornerstone” for Bexel’s new 4K solutions, which offer turnkey packages that will be available to augment sports events and live production broadcasts. The product allows a production team to capture an event from all angles, without ever missing a moment of action.
