A&E® #5  A25-54             LIFETIME®  #6  W25-54         HISTORY® #2  M25-54

Click for source.

Good morning. It’s Thursday May 9, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tonight’s Premieres:
ABC: Wipeout at 8p
Nat Geo:  Mountain Movers at 8p

Tonight’s Finales:
Fox: Glee at 9p
CBS: Two and a Half Men at 8:30; Persons of Interest at 9p

The premier network for upscale men continues to accelerate its ratings growth:

Source: Nielsen, L+SD (000), M18-49, Cable Primetime; Apr 12 vs Apr 13; best quarter, 1Q13.

A+E networks held a dazzling upfront at Lincoln Center last night, packed with stars from all of its networks’ shows, including Duck Dynasty, Project Runway, and Vikings. We’re talking Chloe Sevigny (she was one of the few actresses we saw actually eating at the reception – yay!), Eva Longoria (the EP of Lifetime’s new Devious Maids, along with Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry), and A&E’s Bates Motel’s Vera Farmiga, to name a few.

The overriding theme of the evening was content, content, content, a drum banged repeatedly by newly elevated CEO Nancy Dubuc. She shared two things with us last night: that she wished she could be Katheryn Winnick, the willowy blonde from Vikings (really, she almost is), and that her promotion proved two things: how well the network is managed – ie, by promoting from within – and the fact that it’s she who was chosen illustrates a dedication to content.

During his segment of the presentation, Mel Berning, Executive Vice President, Ad Sales referred to broadcast networks as cable’s “ancestors,” but he stopped working and was having a great old time at the reception, posing with the Counting Cars guys and saying hello to everyone. He took a moment, though, to tell Cynopsis that the reason A+E announced a realignment of its sales force yesterday was “to go after the research piece. If we wait for Nielsen, we’ll be waiting forever,” he commented. “After this Upfront, we’ll be able to aggregate everything together.”

Outdoor Channel decided to stick with Kroenke Sports & Entertainment as its official buyer. The two companies amended their merger agreement to an increased purchase price of $10.25 per share in cash. The amended offer bests an earlier counter offer from InterMedia of $9.75 per share. With the new agreement in place, Outdoor would have to fork over a $7.5 million break-up fee if it does not proceed with Kroenke, significantly higher than the $1 million stipulation initially set.

The waiting is over. NBC has officially canceled midseason mystery drama Deception after a single season. The series suffered low ratings, averaging 3.63 million viewers 18-49, according to Nielsen data.

Nevermind the buzz about the “satellite” interview that was conducted in the same parking lot on Tuesday. CNN is moving on with the announcement of new original series Chicagoland, set to debut in early 2014. The nonscripted, eight-part series, exec produced by Sundance Productions’ Robert Redford and Laura Michalchyshyn and BCTV’s Marc Levin and Mark Benjamin, will probe the people and politics of Chicago.

Michael Bay’s ship isn’t only sailing on Starz. As well as developing original pirate adventure Black Sails for Starz, 10 episodes of Bay’s The Last Ship have been green-lighted by TNT. The drama, about a navy destroyer that survives a nuclear disaster, stars Eric Dane, with Hank Steinberg as show runner.

What’s better than a gig as Oscars host? Seth MacFarlane will guest-voice, for the first time ever, on Fox’s The Simpsons season finale Sunday, May 19 (8p). The finale will also serve as showcase for the winner of the opening credit “Couch Gag” contest, selected from more than 30,000 entries.

~  FYI ~

Harryhausen is renowned for his special effects innovations and as the inventor of stop motion animation. Beginning at 12:45p, Sony Movie Channel will air a Harryhausen documentary, followed by his three renowned Sinbad movies.

The 15th incarnation of The Young Hollywood Awards will be broadcast on The CW Network on Thursday, Aug. 1 (8-10p). This year’s nominees will be announced in June.

Series, which follows a mom and daughters who own one of the most successful resale companies in the country, debuts Sunday, May 12, at 9p.

And, a few notable Mother’s Day promos: Hallmark Channel’s Home & Family is partnering with Almay for a custom integration, “Makeup Moments With Mom,” featuring host Cristina Ferrare and her youngest daughter, Arianna Thomopoulos, touting gift ideas and mother-daughter bonding activities… NickMom, Nickelodeon’s primetime TV block for moms, is running a little iTunes promotion May 21 where several NickMom playlists, including Mom Friends Forever Vols. 1 & 2, and Parental Discretion, are discounted to $8.99 HD/$6.99 SD retail. Starz and Lionsgate are expanding their partnership. The two companies are developing an original series, Fleet Street, in association with Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Produced, Octagon Entertainment, and Piers Morgan’s Ferret Productions. The drama is set in 1970s England and chronicles the rise of tabloid journalism, the sexual revolution and class warfare through the eyes of an American journalist. Executive producers are Morgan, Octagon Entertainment’s John Ferriter (Arsenio Hall Show, It Gets Better), and Jason Felts, Justin Berfield and Michael Forman of Virgin Produced.  BAFTA Award-winning screenwriter Danny Brocklehurst (Shameless UK, Clocking Off) will write the pilot episode and also serve as executive producer.

Carrie Underwood will replace Faith Hill as the singer of “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night,” the opening theme to NBC’s Sunday Night Football broadcasts. The American Idol Season 4 winner will have her debut performance Sept. 8, the first NBC broadcast of the 2013 NFL season.

Two of Fox News Channel’s top anchors, Greta Van Susteren and Megyn Kelly, have renewed their contracts with the network.

Jeanne Cooper, who starred for four decades as Katherine Chancellor on The Young and the Restless, died yesterday morning at age 84. Chancellor, the mother of actor Corbin Bernsen, received 10 Daytime Emmy Award nominations, a Daytime Emmy win in 2008 and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. Cooper was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1993.
