~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Henry Schleiff, President/CEO of Crown Media Holdings, Inc., owner and operator of Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel, will be leaving his position as of May 31, 2009 after serving in this post since October 2006. Schleiff emphasized this was an amicable parting from Crown Media, basing his decision to leave upon the fact that he feels he has accomplished the goals he was hired to achieve. In a personal memo, Schleiff said in part, “I want to underscore how proud I am of the fact that Hallmark Channel has never been in better shape  our incredibly talented and dedicated team has broken records for increases in ratings, distribution and revenue, every quarter, in the two and a half years I’ve been here  including, in this challenging economy, even this one. In short, Hallmark Channel  now, firmly established as a Top Ten cable network  is more successful and more profitable, today, than it has ever been in its 8 year history.” William J. Abbott, EVP/Advertising Sales, currently in charge of national advertising sales, online services and digital network development for both networks, will replace Schleiff as President/CEO.

A&E Network opens a new season of Gene Simmons Family Jewels with a one-hour episode June 7 at 10p. Produced by The Greif Company and the Gene Simmons Company, the 15-episode unscripted series chronicles more antics of Gene Simmons, his wife and teenage children.

TV Land lands Joan Rivers as host for its new original reality series How’d You Get So Rich, premiering August 12 at 10p. From Zoo Productions, Inc. and executive producer Mark Burnett, viewers will follow Rivers as she tours luxurious homes of the super wealthy and meets the owners who accumulated a lot of money in creative ways.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Tribune Broadcasting acquired the sitcoms Entourage and Curb Your Enthusiasm from HBO with both scheduled to air on each of its 23 stations beginning fall 2010. Both series will air as strips, five days a week in late fringe with each running once on the weekend. Tribune’s all-barter deal covers three years, with a three-minute national and four-minute local advertising split in each show.

ION Television is packing its primetime schedule with major theatrical movies as it acquired a feature film package from Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution (WBDTD). The agreement involves twelve movies including exclusive windows for the films The Departed and Ocean’s Thirteen and other titles such as Heat, The Matrix Reloaded, The Perfect Storm, Passenger 57, Assassins among others.

Ascent Media Group, CBS and Warner Bros. Entertainment announced a new platform involving broadcast syndicated programming for television stations in North America will launch later this year. The new platform, created to be cost-efficient, optimized and streamlined, will be used to deliver CBS’ syndicated programming, in both hi-def and standard-def, to broadcast stations.

ITV Global Entertainment Ltd. picked up the international distribution rights to the drama special We’rewolves (1x, 90 min), produced by independent company Wide-Eyed Entertainment. The distribution deal excludes the US.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Dylan Ratigan, former anchor on CNBC is swapping financial news for political news by hosting a new morning weekday show on MSNBC. The as-yet-unnamed show will begin June 29 at 9a following Morning Joe. Ratigan will also contribute to other NBC News programs.

HBO approved a new drama series called Treme set in modern-day New Orleans, cites Variety. The number of episodes is still undecided with production beginning this fall, though HBO picked up the pilot and nine scripts so far. The action follows the main characters, musicians and a restaurateur who live in the Treme district in New Orleans, as they try to rebuild their lives post-Hurricane Katrina. David Simon and Eric Overmyer wrote the series and will executive produce; Nina Noble and Carolyn Strauss will also executive produce with David Mills as co-executive producer. HBO is looking at a possible spring debut for the series.

NBC signed The Office’s Mindy Kaling to a two-year, seven-figure overall deal, per Variety. The agreement allows Kaling to still write and appear in The Office for next season while developing a new series where she will star. Kaling is mulling different development ideas such as another workplace comedy to a buddy sitcom.

CBS may recycle two classic game show concepts as the network is considering ordering pilots for Let’s Make a Deal and The Dating Game. These updated game show versions might replace the daytime hole where long-time soap Guiding Light currently fills after it goes off the air this September. Let’s Make a Deal originally aired from 1963-1973 on ABC and NBC and the first The Dating Game aired from 1965-1980 on ABC. Both were followed by many syndicated versions.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Can the Kindle save the newspaper and magazine businesses? As expected, Amazon unveiled a version of its Kindle e-reader due out this summer with a larger 9.7-inch screen yesterday, optimized for viewing graphics-laden pages of periodicals and text books. There’s no color but the Kindle DX‘s larger screen displays 16 shades of gray and is much easier on the eyes that a backlit laptop screen. The 1/3 inch-thick device comes equipped with a 3.3 GB hard drive that can store up to 3,500 books, the availability of which continue to increase on the platform – the company has added 45,000 new titles in the past 3 months bringing the total to 275,000. Amazon has also struck deals with 3 major textbook publishers, and convinced papers such as The NY Times, The Boston Globe and The Washington Post to offer reduced monthly Kindle subscriptions. (NY Times Chairman Arthur Sulzberger Jr. sees the DX as a great way to increase circulation outside of traditional delivery areas.) Now for the bad news: The thing is going to retail for nearly $489. There are netbooks out there cheaper than that.    Full edition: CYN DIGITAL

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Production has begun on the new CBeebies sketch show series, Gigglebiz (25 episodes), featuring Justin Fletcher and his cast of characters.  Scheduled to launch this summer, Gigglebiz is CBeebies’ first ever live-action sketch show.  The series is being shot both on location and in studio at Elstree.  Fletcher is best known to fans as Mr Tumble and the host of CBeebies Something Special.  Gigglebiz is being produced by Michael Towner, and will feature sketches penned by writers from BBC Entertainment’s Comedy School working with some of the network’s squad of writers and Fletcher.
