Good morning. It’s Thursday, May 3, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

With the Kentucky Derby on deck this weekend, NBCU announced a barrage of company properties that will be utilized to support the telecast. Overall, the company will offer 14.5 hours of Kentucky Derby coverage that wraps up Saturday with that race at 4p.

Among the platforms that the company will leverage to drive up interest and awareness of the festivities will be: Jenna Wolfe reporting from Churchill Downs on Friday for Today; Race host Bob Costas will conduct a live interview with Super Bowl MVP and this week’s Saturday Night Live host Eli Manning during Saturday’s coverage; CNBC’s sports-business reporter, Darren Rovell, will file reports live from Churchill Downs all day; Bravo’s Cat Cora, will be a participating chef in “Taste of the Derby,” which will appear on NBC Sports Network; E! News host Catt Sadler will interview celebrity guests. In addition, throughout this week, Weather Channel’s Wake Up with Al has been featuring the Louisville, Ky., forecast.

On the Air

ESPN Regional Television locked in its slate of bowl games for the upcoming college football season for the company’s seven owned-and-operated contests with all games set for ESPN. The Gildan New Mexico Bowl will kick off the bowl season on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 1p, the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl St. Petersburg will be played Friday, Dec. 21, at 7:30p on ESPN. The MAACO Bowl Las Vegas takes place Dec. 22 at 3:30p, followed by the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas will be played Friday, Dec. 28, at 9p. The final two games organized by the company will be the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl on Dec. 29, at 11:45a and concludes with the seventh annual BBVA Compass Bowl on Saturday, Jan. 5, at 1p.

ESPN has its teams for the 2012 Jimmy V Women’s and Men’s Basketball Classics on Monday, Dec. 3, and Tuesday, Dec. 4. The men’s doubleheader, held at New York City, will tip off at 7p with Texas/Georgetown followed by North Carolina State/Connecticut at 9p with both games on ESPN. The previously announced 2012 Jimmy V Women’s Classic pitting UConn and Maryland.

Even more NCAA movement, this time confirmed by the conferences. Butler is officially set to become a member of the Atlantic 10 beginning with the 2013-14 season. The Bulldogs previously played in the Horizon League. Meanwhile, Texas State is going to leave the crippled WAC for the Sun Belt for the 2013-14 academic year.

CBS Sports announced that its SEC football game for Friday, Nov. 23at 2:30p will feature LSU at Arkansas (Fayetteville). The full CBS Sports’ 2012 SEC schedule and game windows will be released later this year.

With the shocking death of Junior Seau, ESPN will televise a special edition of Outside the Lines today to discuss the life and death of the 12-time Pro Bowl linebacker. Bob Ley will host the duo airings of the series, which will run at 3p and 8p.

NHL COO John Collins confirmed to Puck Daddy that there will be a season three for HBO 24/7: Road To The NHL Winter Classic, featuring the Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs. He stated that the NHL would be more involved behind the scenes in the production work with HBO.

NBA TV’s GameTime studio team will feature New Orleans Hornets head coach Monty Williams as a guest analyst Thursday, May 3, and Friday, May 4.

Week Five of the FOX Saturday Baseball Game of the Week hits the deck this weekend at 3:30p and anchored by the White Sox/Tigers in 41% of the country. Matt Vasgersian and Tim McCarver make the call. Other games include Diamondbacks/Mets in 23% and Brewers/Giants in 23%.

ESPNU unveils the 16-team bracket of the 2012 NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship with the Selection Show airing Sunday at 9p. Host Anish Shroff and analysts Quint Kessenich and Paul Carcaterra offer breakdown of the field and tournament predictions, along with interviews with select head coaches. ESPN networks will subsequently offer exclusive coverage of all 15 games of the NCAA Championship for the sixth straight year beginning Saturday, May 12 and wrapping up on May 28.

The Games – a three-week long event featuring high school sports talent – takes place from July 9-30 at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The sponsorship deal includes on-site activations including nutrition seminars, product sampling and creative execution across television, digital and print assets. NBC will utilize online platforms iVillage and DailyCandy to promote the upcoming Kentucky Derby broadcast. With iVillage offering a contest to win a new wardrobe and accessories from Vineyard Vines’ new Kentucky Derby collection while DailyCandy features Kentucky Derby editorial content on its homepage through a special editorial package titled “Derby Day 101.” The package will include over 40 articles about Derby parties, recipes, fashion, and more.
