Good morning. It’s Thursday, May 2, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

The NHL are pairing the Blackhawks and Penguins to play the 2014 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series, a group of regular-season games slated to be played outdoors next season. The contest will take place on Soldier Field on March 1, 2014 at 8p with more games announced in the coming weeks. League partner MillerCoors locked in title sponsorship of the NHL Stadium Series for its Coors Light brand, where they will be offered assets in addition to incorporating its logo into the official game and event mark. Highlights will include on-air title broadcast rights, camera-visible dasherboard placements of the Coors Light logo, in-arena video spots and PA announcements, activation across key retail and on-premise accounts and integration of the Coors Light brand throughout all NHL media properties – including video, print, digital and radio. NHL Network and NHL.com will provide extensive coverage live from Chicago leading up to and after the game.

On the Air

In support of its coverage of the Kentucky Derby this week, NBC is activating its “Big Event Strategy” for the famed race and will utilize a slew of company outlets to promote the Derby. Properties that are supporting the broadcast include: Today Show, where Al Roker will report live from Churchill Downs on Friday; Weather Channel will cover the event on Wake Up with Al, On the Radar and Morning Rush; CNBC’s sports-business reporter, Brian Schactman, will file reports live from Churchill Downs all day Friday; E! News will feature Kentucky Derby segments all week; Zach Galifinakis and the cast of SNL will contribute content to NBC’s Kentucky Derby broadcast on Saturday; and Michelle Beadle will report live from Churchill Downs on Friday for AH Live. The Big Event Strategy the 2012 Kentucky Derby draw 14.8 million viewers, the third most-watched Kentucky Derby in 23 years.

Golf Channel reports that the network scored its most-watched April in channel history, marking the fourth straight month in 2013 to reach the most-watched milestone. Over 19 million unique viewers tuned in to Golf Channel in April, with 24-hour Total Day scored seeing 128,000 average viewers per minute tuning in. That represents a rise of 11% year-to-year. Meanwhile, Golf Channel’s digital presence also experienced its best month ever in April with GolfChannel.com pulling in record numbers for unique visitors and video starts.

Spike TV and Bellator announced that Bellator Lightweight Champion Michael Chandler will once again put his title on the line when the MMA promotion returns on June 19 for the launch of the Bellator MMA Summer Series live on the channel. The event will broadcast live at 7p with the preliminary card streamed live and free on Spike.com.

NASCAR on FOX goes supersized this weekend with a special one-hour show on Sunday at noon for the Aaron’s 499. Chris Myers hosts with analysis from Darrell and Michael Waltrip (Michael will then race on Sunday). The race announcer Mike Joy joins analysts Darrell Waltrip and Larry McReynolds to call all the racing action.

Meanwhile, NASCAR on FOX and SPEED on-air personality Krista Voda will host tonight’s Talladega International Motorsports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. The event will see the inductions of Rick Hendrick, Dale Inman, Don Schumacher and Rusty Wallace. Voda then dons a headset and microphone Friday afternoon at Talladega Superspeedway, when she reports for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race, as well as her hosting duties for Trackside on SPEED on Saturday.

The NBA Summer League is getting a playoff vibe, with the league revealing that, for the first time since the summer league’s inception in 2004, it will offer a format that includes preliminary games as well as a single-elimination tournament to determine a champion. This year’s summer league starts in Las Vegas on July 12, with the championship matchup set for July 22.

A bi-national bid to host the 2024 Summer Games in both San Diego and Tijuana has already been demolished. The USOC noted that international rules forbid two countries to mount a joint candidacy. Bid organizers say the will look to have the rules changed, according to local reports.

Will sponsorship drive the Chicago Cubs out of Wrigley Field? Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts said that he would move the team out of the historic venue if plans for a new, state-of-the-art video screen are blocked as part of the stadium’s renovation. Multiple reports state that Ricketts needed the extra millions in ad revenue to help bankroll the renovation process.

Production & Technology

FIFA confirmed that the organization will work with Official Partner Sony to test 4K visual technology at the FIFA Confederations Cup Brazil 2013, which starts in June. During the tournament, three matches will be recorded using the technology from a new 4K mobile production unit built by Telegenic. Content will be used as a test for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Aspera announced thatthe ACC deployed the company’s high-speed transfer technology to power their digital sports content distribution service. The league is using fasp transport to ingest video content from the schools at “maximum speed, edit and transcode the content, and distribute it to media outlets.” Aspera faspex transfers from a customized web portal.

Budweiser is launching an interactive BUD 360 app to offer consumers a look at what it’s like to hit speeds of 190 mph in the No. 29 Budweiser Chevrolet. The new app will use surround video technology to give users a 360-degree look inside Kevin Harvick’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series ride while he runs several laps at Charlotte Motor Speedway. While Harvick controls the wheel, the consumer controls the view. The platform used surround video technology to pull in footage from five independent sources that is then combined into one video.

Roster Moves

ONE World Sports, added two veterans to its executive team, naming Joel Feld as Senior Vice President of Production and Executive Producer, while Ricardo Venegas takes on the role of Chief Financial Officer. Most recently, Feld spent six years as Executive Vice President of Programming and Executive Producer for NESN. Venegas served as CFO of CloudBurstTV LLC, a private equity-backed company focused on taking broadband and IPTV technology to rural markets.
