Disney/ABC Television Group announced it will launch Disney Junior, a new multi-platform brand and 24-hour basic cable/satellite channel targeting preschool children in the US by 2012. The new channel will take the place of SOAPnet in the US, reaching 75 million homes. Anne Sweeney, Co-Chair, Disney Media Networks and President, Disney/ABC Television Group said in a press statement that it was not an easy decision to transition SOAPnet out to usher in the new preschool-targeted channel. “The launch of Disney Junior in the U.S. is the next step in our global preschool strategy, which began 10 years ago with the premiere of our first dedicated preschool channel in the UK. The decision to ultimately transition SOAPnet to accomplish this was not arrived at lightly,” said Sweeney. “SOAPnet was created in 2000 to give daytime viewers the ability to watch time-shifted soaps, before multiplatform viewing and DVRs were part of our vocabulary. But today, as technology and our businesses evolve, it makes more sense to align this distribution with a preschool channel that builds on the core strengths of our company.” As the 2009-2010 primetime television season winds down, officially ending tonight, CBS ranks as the most-watched US television network in primetime, a seventh win in eight years. FOX earns the #1 status among A18-49 viewers and its American Idol series will end the season as the top program for the seventh straight year. ABC will likely come in second with the A18-49 demo. VH1 handed out renewals to three reality series giving second season orders to Brandy & Ray J: A Family Business, Basketball Wives and What Chilli Wants. Both Basketball Wives and What Chilli Wants will air their frosh season finales this Sunday at 10p and 1030p respectively, while the finale of Brandy & Ray J: A Family Business will air on June 27 at 9p. 51 Minds Entertainment, LLC, an Endemol Company produces Brandy & Ray J: A Family Business; Shed Media produces Basketball Wives; and What Chilli Wants is produced by FremantleMedia North America. Canada’s The Movie Network and Movie Central will premiere the original series The Pillars of the Earth on July 23 at 9p. The eight-hour miniseries, based on the novel by Ken Follett will also debut on the same day on Starz in the US. The ensemble cast includes Ian McShane, Donald Sutherland, Rufus Sewell, Matthew Macfadyen, Hayley Atwell, Eddie Redmayne, Gordon Pinsent and Alison Pill. The series is a German/Canadian project co-produced by Tandem Communications and Muse Entertainment in association with Ridley Scott and Tony Scott Free Films, Astral Media’s The Movie Network, Corus Entertainment’s Movie Central and CBC Television. Art Linkletter, the iconic television entertainer from the 1950s and ’60s, died yesterday at his Bel-Air home in Los Angeles. He was 97, and though he had been ill during the past few weeks, Linkletter’s cause of death was due to old age. Linkletter was best known to television viewers for his humorous interviews with schoolchildren and ordinary people as host of Art Linkletter’s House Party, a long-running variety show that aired on CBS from 1952-1969 and first debuted on radio in 1944. Linkletter went on to collect the quotes from children into a book titled Kids Say The Darndest Things that sold millions of copies. He also starred in the primetime show People Are Funny which began on radio in 1942 and was on TV from 1954 to 1961. Following his retirement from daily broadcasting in 1969, Linkletter wrote numerous other books such as Old Age is Not for Sissies, How To Be a Supersalesman and his autobiography I Didn’t Do It Alone among several other titles. Linkletter also won a Grammy Award for the best spoken word recording for We Love You, Call Collect that he made with his daughter Diane shortly before her death in 1969. Besides being a television host and successful author, Linkletter was involved in various business dealings including real estate development and the management of large cattle ranches in Montana, New Mexico and California as well as interests in oil and gas wells, livestock in Australia and a solar energy company. Linkletter was preceded in death by his daughter, Diane; his son, Robert in 1980; and a son, Jack in 2007. Linkletter is survived by his wife Lois of 75 years; and daughters Dawn Griffin and Sharon Linkletter in addition to seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Michael H. Jordan, former Chairman/CEO of Westinghouse and CBS, died Tuesday night in New York following a long battle with cancer. Leslie Moonves, President/CEO of CBS Corporation released a statement about Jordan’s death and said this in part, “We are profoundly saddened by the passing of Mike Jordan, our friend and former leader. Mike was a man of great vision and compassion whose thoughtful guidance of both Westinghouse and then CBS helped to shape the future of our company.” A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM HISTORY

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~
BBC Worldwide Channels made a deal with ITV Studios America to develop a US version of the format popular around the world called Come Dine with Me for its international roster of channels. The series, with ten one-hour episodes, will begin production this summer with a premiere roll-out scheduled for early 2011 on BBC America. The show will also premiere next year on BBC Lifestyle in Asia, Africa, Poland, Scandinavia, Middle East and on BBC Entertainment in Latin America. The US version of Come Dine with Me is set in New York in the homes of amateur chefs who are competing for the title of best dinner party host. Each episode follows four strangers who take turns creating their idea of the perfect evening while each contestant rates each host’s performance. The winner will gain the title along with a large prize. Additionally, BBC America picked up the 22-episode UK edition of Come Dine with Me from ITV Studios Global Entertainment and will air these episodes in primetime starting July 7 at 9p. This summer, The Style Network takes on the timely issue of childhood obesity with a new docu-series, Too Fat for 15: Fighting Back from Daisybeck Productions in association with Passion Distribution. The episodes will follow the emotional stories of four obese teens and one pre-teen who have been taken by their families to the Wellspring Academy in North Carolina, a weight-loss boarding school where the kids will work hard to lose weight for their health and happiness. Style Network will premiere the series in August. Academy Award-winning actress Diane Keaton is headlining a new half-hour comedy pilot for HBO titled Tilda about a powerful and feared Hollywood blogger, cites EW. Furthermore, Ellen Page will co-star in the pilot as Carolyn, a morally-conflicted assistant who works for Tilda. Bill Condon and creator Cynthia Mort are producing the Tilda pilot which begins production next month in Los Angeles. A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE

This day in History: 1994 – Nobel Prize-winning author Alexander Solzhenitsyn returned to Russia. He had been in exile for two decades. Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question: You know the film line “life is like a box of chocolates – you never know what you’re going to get” from Forrest Gump. But what TV character had a different view with this line: “Life is like a box of chocolates – a cheap, thoughtless perfunctory gift that nobody every asks for. Unreturnable because all you ever get back is another box of chocolates. So you’re stuck with this undefinable whipped mint crap that you mindlessly wolf down when there’s nothing else left to eat.” C.G.
