~ MORE STUFF ~

The late-90s show, Pop Up Video is making a comeback on VH1 after a ten-year break. VH1 ordered 60 new episodes for this fall and the new version will stick to the original format featuring facts appearing in “bubbles” during current music videos.  Some new elements are added including viewer polling and user-generated information throughout the show.  Pop Up Video originally debuted in 1996 and was on VH1 until 2002.  Woody Thompson, the show’s original co-creator is back as executive producer for Eyeboogie.

VH1 further ordered second seasons of two programs:

  • Mob Wives – The reality series following four women associated with the mafia returns this fall with 12 episodes produced by The Weinstein Company, Electus, JustJenn Productions and Left/Right.
  • Love & Hip Hop – Docu-series about women in the hip hop industry is back in the fall with 10 episodes produced by Monami Entertainment and NFGTV.

MyNetworkTV announced the network’s Fall 2011 primetime schedule highlighted by the addition of Law & Order: SVU on Mondays and Cold Case on Tuesdays.  MyNetworkTV’s Monday-Friday lineup, featuring back-to-back episodes of one-hour programs includes:

Monday: Law & Order: SVU at 8p and 9p
Tuesday: Cold Case at 8p and 9p
Wednesday: Burn Notice at 8p and 9p
Thursday: Without a Trace at 8p and 9p
Friday: Monk at 8p and 9p

Host Christopher Mason reveals stories of murder and mystery shrouded by wealthy family dynasties in the new Investigation Discovery series Behind Mansion Walls, premiering June 6 at 10p.  The series relates crime stories involving victims and suspects including oil tycoons, real estate moguls, self-made billionaires to privileged heiresses.  Behind Mansion Walls is produced by Beyond Productions for Investigation Discovery.

This August, BBC America schedules a new weekly, one-hour time slot titled Dramaville showcasing different British dramas hosted by Idris Elba, star of Luther.  Elba also serves as producer of Dramaville through his company Headshell Productions.  Dramaville opens August 17 at 10p with the six-episode thriller The Hour set in the 1950s.  The miniseries sequel, Luther follows premiering on October 5 at 10p and the six-part crime thriller Whitechapel debuts November 2 at 10p. The Hour is a Kudos Film and Television/BBC America co-production for the BBC; Luther is a BBC and BBC America co-production; and Whitechapel is a Carnival Films production for ITV.

Four new non-scripted shows added to HDnet’s lineup this fall:

  • Celebridate – A dating series hosted by Roger Lodge (Blind Date) sets up his celebrity friends with interesting single men and women.
  • Mr. Personalities Takes on the World – Comedian Ben Morrison takes on different characters as he visits festivals around the country.
  • The Ferris Wheel – Series focuses on the open marriage of Jeremy and Kate Ferris as they travel around the world.
  • The Super – Building superintendent Dave Paladno manages more than 1,700 units.

CNBC host and founding anchor of the network’s morning show Squawk Box, Mark Haines died unexpectedly at his home Tuesday night.  Mr. Haines was 65 years old.  For CNBC, Mr. Haines was also the co-anchor of Squawk on the Street and he had been a fixture on the network for 22 years.  Before he joined CNBC, Mr. Haines was news anchor for several television stations including KYW/Philadelphia, WABC/New York and WPRI/Providence.

In my own opinion — A heads up about a documentary that is airing this weekend on local PBS affiliates.  Who Killed Chea Vichea? investigates the assassination of this popular Cambodian labor party leader who was gunned down in broad daylight.  Director Bradley Cox (my brother) was on the scene within moments and spent the next several years investigating this heinous murder.   A fascinating and horrifying story about corruption, fear and murder.  And by the way — the film has won numerous film festival awards worldwide and is currently banned in Cambodia.  That may tell you something!  Click on this link to find where in your area this film is airing on Sunday night.  In Los Angeles – May 29 at 8:00pm – KOCE; in NYC May 29 at 11:00pm – WLIW; Boston: May 29 at 11:00pm – WGBH; Atlanta: May 29 at 11:00pm – WGPB.

MultiVision Media Inc. is the distributor for FLORIANA IIFA AWARDS 2011, hosted by the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) offered pay-per-view on June 25 at 8p.  The IIFA was created to promote Indian filmmaking worldwide.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Professional tennis player Anna Kournikova joins NBC’s The Biggest Loser for the new 12th season.  Show producers emphasize though Kournikova is not a substitute for Jillian Michaels, who is departing the series.  Upcoming episodes of The Biggest Loser will head in a slightly different direction and focus more on “overall well-being and health” rather than tracking lost inches.  Additionally, two show trainers, Brett Hoebel and Cara Castronuova, who both joined during the 11th season will not be back for the next season.

Biker drama Sons of Anarchy on FX added two more actors for its fourth season debuting this fall:

  • Niko Nicotera (Rome) lands a major recurring role as Ratboy, a 20-something prospect Clay (Ron Perlman) and Jax (Charlie Hunnam) want to recruit for SAMCRO, per THR.
  • Rockmond Dunbar (Soul Food, Prison Break) will play Eli Roosevelt in a multiple-episode run as the new sheriff in Charming.  Sheriff Roosevelt makes it clear to Clay and Jax and the club members that things have changed since their 14-month stint in prison.

Showtime’s Dexter taps Billy Brown (Lights Out) for a recurring role in the series’ upcoming sixth season playing Mike Cutler, a practical-minded Chicago homicide detective who transfers to Miami Metro where he quickly ruffles some egos.

FOX’s upcoming Bones spinoff The Finder needs a new female lead as Saffron Burrows is exiting the show.  The British actress played Geoff Stults’ partner in the show’s pilot portraying a tough bar owner and helicopter pilot.  FOX has opted to re-work the role.

The new fall Tim Allen comedy Last Man Standing on ABC promoted Christoph Sanders (Ghost Whisperer) from guest star to series regular, reports THR.  Sanders, who was forced to release his role on The CW’s new Hart of Dixie series is cast as Kyle on Last Man Standing.  20th Television produces.

Model and fitness personality Pauline Nordin joins digital fitness network, ExerciseTV On Demand.  Nordin appeared on the Nordic version of The Biggest Loser and she will bring her own video workouts to the network beginning June 28.
