Good morning. It’s Thursday, May 24, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
After a standoff that all but prevented the United States from hosting an Olympic Games in recent years, the USOC and IOC have reportedly agreed to a revenue redistribution plan that will bridge the divide. Outlets such as the New York Times and AP say that international and American Olympic officials successfully renegotiated how television and marketing dollars will be distributed and the deal is expected to be signed off any day. The new revenue-sharing deal will not begin until 2020 and will run through 2040, with the United States’ promise to raise millions of dollars to contribute to the staging of future Olympics. After the deal is official, the US will begin bidding for Games once again. The US was previously receiving a 12.75% share of United States broadcasting deals and a 20% take of global marketing revenues.
Speaking of which, NBCUniversal announced that the company will offer 5,535 hours of coverage for the 2012 London Olympics across NBC, NBC Sports Network, MSNBC, CNBC, Bravo, Telemundo, NBCOlympics.com, two specialty channels, and the first-ever 3D platform. NBC itself will offer 272.5 hours of coverage, marking the most ever for an Olympic broadcast network, due to an increase in daytime coverage, over a span of 17 days and offer nearly 50 hours more than the 225 hours for Beijing in 2008. Coverage will begin on most weekdays at 10a immediately following NBC News’ Today, which is originating from London. The network will cover swimming, track and field, gymnastics, diving, and beach volleyball, among other sports.
Think the cost of sports rights is about to level off? If you did, you would be utterly alone. A gathering of sports media executives at The Cable Show convention said that they fully expect the cost of rights for sports to continue climbing. David Levy, President of Sales and Distribution at Turner Broadcasting stated that live sporting events remain the “last appointment viewing on television.”
ESPN announced the match analysts for its presentation of the UEFA European Football Championship 2012, which is slated to run from June 8 through July 1 in Poland and Ukrain. The English-language analysts will be led by Steve McManaman who will be paired with Ian Darke as the primary team. Other analysts include Robbie Mustoe, Kasey Keller and Taylor Twellman. Keller and Twellman will split match analyst roles working with ESPN UK’s Derek Rae, while also contributing studio analysis. Around the dial on ESPN Deportes, the Spanish-language booth analysts include Hernan Pereyra, Rafa Puente and Jose Antonio Noriega.
NBA TV is set to run Shaqtin’ A Fool, a special 30-minute edition of the segment featuring Shaquille O’Neal that aired on TNT’s Inside the NBA and via NBA.com throughout the season. The special will air on Monday, May 28 at 7p and will be hosted by Jared Greenberg with O’Neal and Dennis Scott. The program will highlight the “best and most outrageous moments from players, fans, mascots, and coaches during the 2011-2012 NBA season, as well as humorous bloopers from prior seasons.”
NASCAR announced the organization’s 2013 class of inductees into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. The round will include Herb Thomas, Leonard Wood, Rusty Wallace, Cotton Owens and Buck Baker. The class will be inducted on Friday, Feb. 8, 2013 at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, N.C.
FOX Sports’ Baseball Night in America offers five matchups the Saturday at 7p, led by Phillies/Cardinals in 47% of the country. Joe Buck, Tim McCarver and Ken Rosenthal call the action from Busch Stadium. Other action will see the Rays/Red Sox in 25%, Cubs/Pirates in 10%, Angels/Mariners in 11% and Rockies/Reds in 6%.
NBC Sports Network revealed soccer coverage plans this weekend which will include the U.S. Men’s National Team against Scotland in a ‘friendly,’ live from EverBank Field on Saturday at 8p. Arlo White and Kyle Martino will call the game. The channel will feature air two MLS games starting Saturday with a 2011 MLS Cup rematch between Houston and 2011 MLS Champions LA Galaxy at 2:30p, followed by Sunday’s game as Sporting KC host the San Jose Earthquakes at 4:30p.
