NBCUniversal detailed its 2012 London Olympics coverage across all its networks including NBC, NBC Sports Network, MSNBC, CNBC, Bravo, Telemundo and NBCOlympics.com as well as two specialty channels and a first-ever 3D platform. In total, NBCU will provide 5,535 hours of Olympics coverage which is equal to 231 days of coverage, showcasing all 32 sports and all 302 medal competitions. NBC will broadcast 272.5 hours of Olympics coverage over 17 days, the most ever for an Olympic broadcast network due mainly to an increase in daytime coverage. NBC’s coverage commences with the Opening Ceremony on July 27 at 730p and the network’s coverage will include swimming, track and field, gymnastics, diving and beach volleyball among other sports. NBC’s Olympic coverage will be divided into three day parts: daytime, primetime and late night. NBC’s daytime coverage will begin on most weekdays at 10a following Today which is broadcasting from London and on weekends, NBC will begin its coverage at 5a. Bob Costas will serve as NBC’s primetime host; Al Michaels and Dan Patrick will host the weekday and weekend daytime coverage; and Mary Carillo will host the late night show. NBC Sports Network is the home to US team sports with a total of 292.5 hours of coverage including 257.5 hours of original content. MSNBC will have 155.5 hours offering a variety of long-from Olympics programming over 19 days. CNBC will house Olympic boxing coverage including the launch of women’s boxing. The network will provide 73 hours of boxing coverage over 16 days. Bravo will home to Olympic tennis with 56 hours of long-form tennis coverage from July 28 to August 3. Telemundo will offer Spanish-language Olympic coverage, the most in the company’s history with more than 173 hours. NBCOlympics.com will live stream coverage from NBCU’s cable channels NBC Sports Network, MSNBC, CNBC and Bravo. Furthermore, two specialty channels for basketball and soccer are available to cable, satellite and telco providers with a total of 770 hours of coverage. Panasonic Corporation of North America is working with the NBC Sports Group to make 3D coverage available to all US distributors who carry Olympic coverage on cable, satellite and telco. This joint effort will produce 242 hours of coverage and mark the first time the Olympic Games will be distributed in the US in 3D.
The 46th Annual Country Music Association (CMA) Awards will air live on ABC November 1 at 8p. The telecast will air from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.
This summer, PBS offers several British series as the world focuses on the UK for Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee in June and the London Olympic Games beginning in late July (check local listings for all programs):
- On July 1, PBS premieres the one-hour series, Queen & Country at 8p. Trevor McDonald offers a look at the customs surrounding the British monarchy such as the Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace to tours of the historic royal palaces. Queen & Country airs on Sundays, July 1-22 at 8p.
- Michael Wood’s Story of England follows historian Michael Wood as he serves up England’s 2,000-year old history through the story of one small town: Kibworth, Leicestershire. Premieres July 3 at 8p; this four-part series airs Tuesday, July 3 from 8-10p and July 10-17 from 8-9p.
- On Sundays, MASTERPIECE Mystery! presents new episodes of Endeavour, the back story of detective Inspector Morse premiering July 1 at 9p and four new episodes of Inspector Lewis, Series V launch July 8-29 at 9p.
- Two other British series are back on PBS with Queen Victoria’s Empire airing Tuesdays starting June 19-26 from 8-10p and Monarchy: The Royal Family at Work airing on Mondays beginning June 11 at 9p and also on June 18-July 9 at 10p.
In early June, Discovery Fit & Health presents a week-long programming event called Psych Week beginning June 3 to June 8. Hosted by Carrie Fisher, Psych Week will offer mental health programming that highlights various afflictions and addictions each night at 8p with specials and documentaries along with the new mystery series Broken Minds premiering with back-to-back episodes on June 6 at 9p. Broken Minds is hosted by Dr. Reef Karim and explores patients who live in an alternative reality and the doctors who are trying to help them. HISTORY’s series Cajun Pawn Stars is back with a new season starting June 6 at 9p. The series, a spinoff of the network’s series Pawn Stars, is set at the Silver Dollar Pawn & Jewelry Center in Alexandria, Louisiana owned and run by Jimmie DeRamus and his family. Leftfield Pictures produces the series for HISTORY.
A third season of Flying Wild Alaska premieres on Discovery Channel June 8 at 10p. The series follows the Tweto family who provide the only lifeline to isolated communities of Northern Alaska through their regional airline, Era Alaska.
Beginning in August, OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network is partnering with The Huffington Post Media Group. OWN will have a special section on The Huffington Post’s website featuring content created by writers and producers from OWN and Oprah.com specifically for The Huffington Post.
Monday’s 16th season debut of VH1 Storytellers on VH1 at 11p averaged a 0.5 rating with A18-49 and delivered 723,000 total viewers.
Film, TV and stage actress Janet Carroll died Tuesday in New York at the age of 71. Ms. Carroll was best-known playing Tom Cruise’s mother on vacation in the 1983 film Risky Business. Her acting career spanned three decades and included two recurring roles in two popular sitcoms, playing the owner of the store where shoe salesman Al Bundy (Ed O’Neill) worked in FOX’s Married … With Children and as the wife of anchorman Jim Dial (Charles Kimbrough) on CBS’ Murphy Brown. Ms. Carroll also had regular roles on the television series The Bronx Zoo, The Bonnie Hunt Show as well as stints on Brothers & Sisters, Designing Women, Matlock, Third Rock from the Sun, Law & Order: SVU and Scrubs. A sampling of her films included The Killing Time (1987), Memories of Me (1988), Family Business (1989) among others in addition to the upcoming film College Debts. Ms. Carroll made her Broadway debut in 2005 in the original musical Little Women and also appeared elsewhere on stage in Lady Windermere’s Fan, A Couple of White Chicks and Electra. She also appeared in eight major musicals every summer for five years at the Starlight Theatre in Kansas City, where she began her stage career following high school. Ms. Carroll’s survivors include her son George and daughter-in-law Lauren. A memorial service for Ms. Carroll is this Saturday at 3p at Advent Lutheran Church in New York.

Tuesday A18-49 Analysis: FOX notched a win with the A18-49 viewers on Tuesday at 3.7/11, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. FOX’s American Idol was well ahead of the pack during 8p at 4.4/14 and Univision’s Una Familia con Suerte was second at 2.2/7. NBC’s America’s Got Talent topped at 9p at 3.3/9 followed by ABC’s Dancing with the Stars Results show season finale at 3.1/8. ABC then had a turn in the winner’s circle at 10p with the season finale of Dancing with the Stars at 3.5/10 and Univision was in second place once again with La Que No Podia Amar at 2.0/5.

Advertising sales executive, Susan Malfa was elevated to the newly-created position of SVP/Ad Sales for Bravo Media, Oxygen Media, Style Media and Women at NBCU by NBCUniversal. Susan will now have expanded oversight for ad sales on behalf of Style Media which became part of NBCU from the joint venture transaction between Comcast and GE. Sony Pictures Television (SPT) named Wayne Garvie as CCO/International Production, SPT. In his new role, Wayne will head creative developments across SPT’s worldwide network of joint venture companies and its production studios outside of Los Angeles. Wayne reports to Andrea Wong, President, SPT International Production. Prior to this appointment, Wayne was with All3MEDIA as Managing Director International Production since January 2011.
Alex Lang takes on a new position at Play Creative TV as Executive Producer/Creative Director.
