~ PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT NEWS ~

Talk about being made for a gig. Superstar veteran comedian Billy Crystal is set to play a superstar veteran comedian in The Comedians. FX has ordered to pilot the half-hour comedy series, that centers on Crystal’s character, who’s reluctantly teamed with a younger, edgier comedian for a late-night comedy sketch show. The series, produced by Fox Television Studios, is scheduled for this summer.

Ricky Schroder and his production company have teamed up with the U.S. Army to produce Starting Strong, an unscripted series that provides a look at Army life through the eyes of potential soldiers, reports The Hollywood Reporter. The 10-week series, which is being directed, narrated and produced by Schroder via Ricky Schroder Productions, is set to debut Sunday, June 2 in 16 FOX affiliate markets. Four additional episodes will air online.

Former MTV executive David Janollari has signed a three-year development deal with NBC. He’ll be tasked with developing scripted projects for the network. The move reunites Janollari with NBC entertainment president Bob Greenblatt. The duo worked together to develop such memorable series as American Family and Six Feet Under.

CBS has ordered the single-camera comedy Bad Teacher for the 2013-2014 season. Based on the hit feature film of the same name, the series will star Ari Graynor as an inappropriate and unapologetic former trophy wife who masquerades as a teacher to find a new man after her husband leaves her penniless. Hilary Winston, Lee Eisenberg, Gene Stupnitsky, Sam Hansen, Jimmy Miller and Michael Lasker are executive producers for Sony Pictures Television in association with CBS Television Studios and Mosaic Media Group.

Comedy Central has inked a multiplatform development deal with comedian Hannibal Buress. The pact includes a pilot commitment, which Buress will executive produce and star in, a recurring role on the upcoming comedy Broad City, a one-hour stand-up special, and a nationwide tour.

USA Network has greenlit the half-hour comedy pilot Divide & Conquer from executive producer and writer Peter Ocko (The Office, Fairly Legal). The pilot is from Universal Cable Productions.

~ RETURNING SERIES ~

TLC is reviving Who Do You Think You Are? The network has ordered eight episodes of the former NBC reality series that looks at the personal histories of celebrities to uncover their family background. The series, produced by Shed Media U.S. and Is or Isn’t Entertainment, is set to premiere Tuesday, July 23 and has already slated episodes for Christina Applegate, Cindy Crawford, Zooey Deschanel and Chris O’Donnell.

~ CASTING NEWS ~

Emma Roberts is the latest cast addition to FX‘s American Horror Story: The Coven. There are no details on her character, who’s being simply described as a party girl.

Billy Baldwin will guest star in the last two episodes of the upcoming season of BBC America drama Copper. He’ll play William “Wild Bill” Estace, a Tammany Hall power broker. Also appearing at the end of the season is Lindy Booth (Kick-A$$ 2, Fairly Legal) as Teresa Trembley, protected witness of a high-profile murder in Five Points.

Showtime has announced guest stars that will appear in the third season of Homeland, which premieres Sunday, September 29 at 9p. Among them: Joanna Merlin (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit) as Jessica Brody’s mother; Nazanin Boniadi (How I Met Your Mother) as Fara an analyst; Amy Morton (Boss) as Carrie Mathison’s CIA appointed attorney Erin Kimbal; Gary Wilmes (Louie) as Dr. Richardson, a psychiatrist helping Dana Brody; Sam Underwood (The Last Keepers) as Leo, a troubled new friend of Dana’s; Tracy Letts (Prison Break) as Senator Andrew Lockhart; Broadway vet Lawrence Clayton (Dreamgirls, The Big C) as Admiral Jim Pennington; and Pedro Pascal (Graceland) as Majority Counsel David Portillo. The series is produced by FOX 21.

Logan Marshall-Green (Prometheus) has been tapped to star in the new Cinemax pilot Quarry, based on the book by Max Allan Collins. He’ll play a Marine sniper who returns home from Vietnam to find that he’s been shunned by those he loves.

~  INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS  ~

Foxtel has commissioned an Australian version of Maverick‘s Embarrassing Bodies, the health series that tackles obscure medical conditions people are too self-conscious to talk to their doctor about. The series currently airs in more than 100 markets around the world, including Australia on Foxtel’s LifeStyle YOU, with local versions produced in Belgium, Holland, France and now Australia. “Embarrassing Bodies is one of LifeStyle YOU’s most successful properties, so it is a huge win for Foxtel not only to have secured the rights to a local version,” said Hannah Barnes, Foxtel’s Head of Programming and Commissions  LifeStyle Channels. Titled Embarrassing Bodies Down Under, the show will be produced by Shine Australia exclusively for Foxtel’s LifeStyle YOU channel, with production on the series to commence next month.
