UPFRONT 2011: TNT and TBS

Both TBS and TNT were in the thick of things, hosting their Upfront presentations in New York yesterday. After a power surge briefly disrupted the morning presentation …

….  okay, hang on here a sec.  If you weren’t there, you need to get a better idea of what a “power surge” in the middle of  an Upfront presentatation means.  The first indication there’s an issue is when Conan O’Brien tosses to a clip that could have been embarrassing to Michael Wright, EVP/Head of Programming for TNT, TBS and TCM, but it only has audio — and that wasn’t the joke.  Then Michael Wright, comes out and introduces the first new series clip for The Wedding Band.  The lights go down, the room is dark and …. nothing happens.  Really, nothing happens.  We all sit there in the dark for a bit and eventually elevator music kicks in.  I couldn’t tell you how much time passed, but everyone in the house was probably thinking the same thing — the poor tech guy back stage who was no doubt in a panic to get this figured out.  For heaven’s sake, Bewkes and Kent were in the house!  Yes, it was a little uncomfortable just waiting.  And then Steve Koonin comes out on stage introduces himself: “Hello, I’m Steve Koonin, former President of Turner Entertainment Networks” [big laugh – tension eases measurably] and begins to explain:  “We had a power surge that attacked the hard drives of the computers …. (pause) …. look, I’m Jewish, so I have absolutely no clue what happened!”  The room goes wild, huge applause, and Koonin keeps vamping for the next few minutes and we’re all thinking — he’s got a future in late night! After about 3-4 minutes, the problem has been “fixed” and he leaves the stage to a standing ovation.  In a few moments tho, it’s clear the problem has not been 100% corrected, so this time Ray Romano comes out and vamps for a few minutes, diving right into his hilarious standup routine.  This could have been a complete and utter disaster, but everyone appreciated the honesty and humanity and the humor – making this the best upfront of the season.  Well done Turner!  Well done!  Okay … so back to the actual upfront …

New series coming to TNT next season:

  • Major Crimes – TNT approved 10 episodes of this new crime drama set in the Los Angeles Police Department.  Mary McDonnell stars and continues her character of Capt. Canadian supernatural drama Lost Girl found a new home on Syfy in the US, as the network picked up both seasons totaling 26 episodes.  Lost Girl centers on Bo, a supernatural seductress (Anna Silk) called a Succubus.  Bo was raised by human parents and did not realize she was different until she “drained” her first boyfriend to death.  Bo then becomes a loner and discovers she is one of the Fae, a creature of legend and folklore. Lost Girl is developed and produced by Prodigy Pictures in association with Shaw Media and Showcase.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

The CW commissioned the reality show The Frame from Armoza Formats for a full series produced by Shed Media.  The Frame is a cross-platform reality show where eight pairs of contestants will have their living space in their homes reduced to one camera frame. The rule of the show is the contestants must live while on the show in that one camera frame; if they step out of the frame, they are out of the game.  It is likely The CW will introduce The Frame as part of their 2011-2012 upfront presentation today.

Atlas Media Corp., producer of non-fiction entertainment in the US, is working with personality Rachel Uchitel to produce a docu-series based on her life.  Uchitel appeared on Dr. Drew Pinksy’s program Celebrity Rehab and is a former reporter with Bloomberg Television.  The series will follow Uchitel as she juggles a new career as a private investigator as well as her personal and business relationships.  The series is being pitched to networks starting today.

HBO’s drama pilot from Aaron Sorkin tentatively titled More as the Story Develops, starring Jeff Daniels as Will, a co-anchor on a cable news show, added Olivia Munn and Alison Pill.  Munn plays Sloan, an attractive financial analyst with a show on Will’s network.  Pill will play Maggie, one of Will’s loyal associate producers in an unstable relationship with another staffer on the show.

Annie Mumolo, co-writer/co-producer on the hit film Bridesmaids signed a blind script agreement at ABC, cites THR.  The deal allows Mumolo to develop a project for ABC Studios which will be produced by Tagline, the company behind USA Network’s Psych and the new ABC series Man Up.

Casting Call: MTV, Doron Ofir Casting and 495 Productions are casting for a strip series for MTV called the FriendZone.  If you are at least 18 and appear younger than 25 years and have a friend you have a crush on, the show invites you to apply.  The show is casting in NY, NJ and PA. To apply, visit: www.friendzonecasting.com.
