Good morning. It’s Thursday, May 16, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

The NHL announced two more events for its 2014 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series, both of them set to be played at Yankee Stadium. Game one will pit the Rangers/Devils on Sunday Jan. 26 at 12:30p. The second will take place three days later on Jan. 29 with the Rangers/Islanders at 7:30p. The pair of games will join the Ducks/Kings at Dodger Stadium on Jan. 25, and the Penguins/Blackhawks at Soldier Field on March 1 for the Series..

In addition, Universal Sports announced that the channel will debut Countdown to Sochi on October 30, 100 days before the opening ceremonies in Russia. Craig Hummer will host the 14-week show that will spotlight (commentator for NBC and Universal Sports  everything from cycling to PBR) the most compelling stories, including athlete profiles, features and coverage of the winter sports competitions, leading up to the 2014 Sochi games.

ESPN Deportes presented its upfront presentation to advertisers yesterday, announcing programming initiatives that include: Road to Brazil 2014: Game around the Game, with a look at the biggest stories in soccer; Destino Brasil, pre- and post-match analysis dedicated to the World Cup Qualifying matches on the road to Brazil; documentary series Destino Futbol; documentary series Gringos at the Gate, as well as new sports programming that includes the NBA Finals in Spanish for the first time, more MLB games, and Liga MX and Copa MX.

The Olympic Trials will select the 2014 U.S. Olympic Speedskating Team, which will represent Team USA in Sochi, Russia.

Dottie Pepper will return to television as part of ESPN’s golf coverage team and will make her on-air debut at next month’s U.S. Open. Pepper is a 17-time winner on the LPGA Tour but will now serve multiple roles on ESPN’s multiplatform golf coverage including analyst, on-course reporter and anchor during live play. She also will be an analyst on ESPN’s signature news and information program SportsCenter and will write for ESPN.com. ESPN will televise the first two rounds of the U.S. Open on June 13-14.

Golf Channel honors history and marks 10 years since Annika Sorenstam became the first woman in modern history to join men in a PGA Tour event. The network will air a retrospection dubbed Go Annika on May 22 at 9p to celebrate the occasion. The 30-minute documentary will detail “how and why the World Golf Hall-of-Famer and the best female golfer of her generation came to play in the tournament and reveal for the first time her words about how being under such an intense microscope then changed her outlook about her career and life forever.”

The Mountain West Conference announced a multi-year deal with DIRECTV Sports Networks and its ROOT Sports-branded regional sports network to serve as regional TV home of Mountain West football and men’s basketball. ROOT Sports Rocky Mountain will annually produce and carry around 10 football games featuring Mountain West teams, as well as a minimum of 25 MW intra-conference and non-conference men’s basketball games, beginning with the 2013-2014 season.

NESN reports that the channel drew a series-best 16.8 average Nielsen household rating for its coverage of the Bruins shocking comeback in game 7 of the series on Monday. Overall, the series averaged an 11.7 household rating for the channel.

Sports Illustrated revealed its 10th annual Fortunate 50 list, ranking the 50 highest-earning professional athletes in the U.S. and will be featured in the May 20 edition. For the second consecutive year, Floyd Mayweather tops the list having earned $90 million in 2013. LeBron James took second place with a total of $56,5445,000, followed by Drew Brees, Kobe Bryant, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Derrick Rose, Peyton Manning, Alex Rodriguez and Zack Grenke.

Sponsorship & Promotion

Andre Agassi is back on team Nike. Eight years after leaving Nike to join Adidas, Agassi announced that he has returned to the brand once again. Agassi’s return to Nike coincides with the brand’s new Designed to Move campaign.

The GoDaddy.com Bowl is no more. Instead, bowl organizers announced a slight tweak to the name with the GoDaddy Bowl set to be held at Ladd Peebles Stadium on Sunday, Jan. 5 2014 at 8p. The game will be carried by ESPN.

State Water Heaters signed on to join Stewart-Haas Racing, with the brand serving as an associate sponsor of the No. 14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1 Chevrolet SS driven by Stewart and the No. 39 Quicken Loans Chevrolet SS driven by teammate Ryan Newman. Additionally, State Water Heaters will serve as the primary sponsor of Newman and the No. 39 team during the Goody’s Fast Relief 500 Sprint Cup race weekend Oct. 25-27 at Martinsville (Va.) TNT and TBS announced plans to become the first national networks to give viewers a chance to watch the network on their mobile devices 24/7. The Watch TBS and Watch TNT apps will launch during the summer and include NBA coverage for the TNT app, while the TBS app will include MLB programming.
