Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, May 10, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing, coming to you from the Cable Show 2007 in Las Vegas.

More cast news about Marvel Studios’ live-action adaptation of The Incredible Hulk.  A deal is in the works for Tim Roth to take on the role as the evildoer Emile Blonsky, aka Abomination, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  Shooting begins in Toronto next month and the movie is slated for a June 13, 2008 release.  By the way, Roth is probably best known for his role in the movie Reservoir Dogs.

Julie Andrews has said she will serve as the narrator for an upcoming Disney project, Enchanted, a mixed animated/live-action movie, per Sci Fi Wire.  The movie, which stars Patrick Dempsey, Susan Sarandon and James Mardsen among others, follows the story of a young girl who finds herself in the real life NYC, after being exiled from an animated fairy kingdom by a yucky queen.  Andrews lends her voice again to Queen Lillian in Shrek the Third, which opens next week on May 18.

Jetix Europe N.V. will co-produce Combo Ninos (26×30′), a new flash animated action/comedy series, with France’s SIP Animation and TF1, which is slated to launch on Jetix Europe’s channels in August 2008.  Targeted to K6-10, Combo Ninos are four kids who can transform themselves into animal-centric superheroes as they fight to protect their ancient city.  Jetix Europe holds the TV distribution across Europe as well as controlling the consumer products and home video rights in Europe, Middle East and French-speaking Africa and the Caribbean.  Disney’s Buena Vista International Television will handle the distribution of the TV rights for the series elsewhere, and will launch it at MIPCOM Junior in October 2007. 

MORE KIDS STUFF

Disney Online has launched its Disney Mix Central, an online media store that is targeted to kids and where they can download music and music videos, some of which will be exclusives.  Kids can download content to Disney’s Mix Stick MP3 player and its Mix Max video player.  Later this month, Disney will add Disney Max video clips containing full length movies from Disney Studios Home Entertainment including Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Herbie Fully Loaded and Sky High among others.  Like iTunes disneymixcentral.com will offer music singles for $.99/each, while albums will start at $9.99, and music videos will go for $1.99.

Disney Online also launches a new version of Disney Connection, a broadband destination available through certain high-speed Internet providers that offers interactive content for kids and families. The updated version of the broadband service features a suite of exclusive single and multi-player games as well as targeted channels for different demographics. In addition, for select affiliates, the new version will include access to Playhouse Disney Preschool Time Online and Disney Game Kingdom Online, two of Disney’s premium subscription products.

Taffy Entertainment brought on Canada-based HOLA Entertainment to serve as the company’s distribution agents for free TV broadcasters and video distributors in Latin America.  Taffy will continue handling distribution of the Pay TV rights for their catalog.  Taffy Entertainment has already closed deals with several Latin America broadcasters, including TV Globo and TVN Chile. Some of the programs to be distributed by HOLA include: Cosmic Quantum Ray (26×22), a CGI animated science/comedy/action/adventure series; Lamimila (26×22), a creative play preschool show; Mix Master: King of Cards (39×22′)  a new anime and trading card fantasy/action/comedy; Growing Up Creepie (26×22′); I Goat A Rocket (26×22′)  the series is based on a popular Australian kid’s book a tween boy and his space rocket outfitted with artificial intelligence; Dive Olly Dive; Code Lyoko; ToddWorld; and Pet Alien among others.

At NCTA yesterday The History Channel has unveiled plans to launch Take a Vet to School in partnership with cable affiliates, as a way to support veterans from all wars and their range of needs.  On the kid/teen level, the effort includes a multi-tiered outreach plan to link war veterans with schools and communities nationwide.   R. Lee Ermey, the ex-Marine and host of the network’s Mail Call, will serve as the spokesperson for the campaign.  Take a Vet to School Day, will run from mid-October through Veterans Day, November 12, 2007.  Public Service Announcements will be shown on local MSO systems with the goal of encouraging schools to invite local veterans to share their stories with students in grades K-12.  In addition, the network will provide schools with curriculum-based educational materials as well a Veterans Day video produced with the US Department of Education.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Fox’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer movie tie-ins will find The Fantastic Four are drinking and driving  but not like that. 

  • The Fantastic Four will appear in the new National Milk Mustache “got milk?” campaign in conjunction with the June 15, 2007 movie release.  The ad, which debuts in the May issue of Marvel Magazine, features copy that reads, Fantastic Pour. Want to look super?
  • Our four superheroes have also teamed with the Chrysler Group to drive its unique futuristic high-flying, super fast Dodge, the Fantasticar, in the new movie.
    • Audiences will get their first look at the vehicle beginning this weekend, when a new Dodge ad debuts in cinemas.
    • A limited edition car will debut as the No. 19 Fantasticar, the Dodge Charger driven by Elliott Sadler, at the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway on May 27.
    • Additionally, through Fox’s license deals: Hasbro will produce a Dodge Fantasticar replica; the car will also be featured in the video game based on the movie; and in-theater and national TV promotions.

Electronic Arts is working on a Simpsons Game (working title), based on the TV series, in partnership with Gracie Films, Fox Television and Fox Licensing and Merchandising.  Currently under development by EA’s Redwood Shores Studio, The Simpsons Game is scheduled for release in fall 2007 for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PSP, Xbox 360, and Nintendo’s Wii and DS.
