Good morning. It’s Thursday, March 8, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

The Tour de France is coming to live network television for the first time, with NBC picking up eight hours of the race that will air the weekend of July 7-8. Same-day coverage of the first stage of the event on Sunday, July 1 as well as the final stage on Sunday, July 22 have also been added to NBC’s lineup. Meanwhile, NBC Sports Network will continue to offer nearly 14 hours of coverage per day.

On the Air

ESPN is wrapping up its most-watched men’s college basketball season in history, highlighted by the March 3 matchup between North Carolina and Duke, which handed the network its highest-rated game of the season, according to Nielsen. After 130 regular-season games in 2011-12, ESPN is averaging a 1.1 rating, according to the network, up 10% from last season’s 1.0. In addition, ESPN ended the regular season averaging 1,061,000 households for a 1% increase over year ago tallies. Over on ESPN2, which televised 184 games, the network finished up 33% with a .4 score. Online, the company is reporting that college basketball content across ESPN.com, the ESPN mobile Web and ScoreCenter delivered 1.6 billion total minutes and 283 million visits, for a boost of 16% and 5% respectively compared to the previous season.

The MAC gave Temple an early out, forging an agreement with the university to withdrawal football from the conference effective immediately and allowing for a quick move to the Big East for next season. Temple spent five seasons playing with the conference and will pay $6 million to leave early. Meanwhile, Temple will not shift its other sports from the Atlantic 10 to the conference until 2013.

Sunday’s seven hours of combine coverage on NFL Network scored as the most-watched Combine telecast of all-time with an average of 450,000 viewers, up 11% from last year (406,000) and up 62% over 2010 (277,000). Overall, more than 6.5 million viewers tuned into the channel’s coverage of the combine, averaging 6.51 million this year, although that was off slightly from last year’s 6.55, according to Nielsen. Online audiences on the league’s digital media properties including NFL.com, NFL Mobile Only From Verizon and other mobile outlets jumped 37% for full combine coverage with unique users from Sunday’s workout coverage spiking 39%.

ESPN is set to unveil the 64-team NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship field as part of their Selection Special on Monday at 7p. Trey Wingo will host the bracket special with analysts Kara Lawson, Carolyn Peck, Doris Burke and Rebecca Lobo. After the announcements, the discussion heads over to ESPNU at 8p when the foursome is joined by Jemele Hill. ESPN will be airing all 63 games of the 2012 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship for the 10th consecutive year beginning Saturday, March 17 and running through the NCAA National Championship game on Tuesday, April 3.

2011 Champion Anthony Robles is joining ESPN as an analyst for upcoming coverage of the 2012 NCAA Wrestling Championships. He will team with analyst Tim Johnson and play-by-play commentator Adam Amin for the broadcasts.

CBS Sports Network is bolstering its lacrosse coverage this season with the debut of National Lacrosse League (NLL) and Major League Lacrosse (MLL), as well as a slate of college games with 39 games on deck this season. Competition begins Friday, March 30 with a Patriot League battle between Lehigh and Navy at 7p. Casey and Mike Powell will join CBS Sports Network beside play-by-play announcer Brent Stover.

The UFC on FX 2 event scored 1.4 million viewers, according to Nielsen, with the preliminary bouts on Fuel TV pulling in 113,000. FX’s rating bests its first UFC event, which drew 1.3 million viewers.

Meanwhile, Spike TV has opted to continue its counter programming maneuvers and will air a Nate Diaz fight marathon up against May’s UFC on FOX 3 event on May 5 featuring Diaz facing Jim Miller. The marathon, dubbed UFC Unleashed: Nate Diaz will run for five hours beginning at 7p.

Bill Simmons’ podcast The B.S. Report is heading for television for the first time, with a full episode of the show running on Sunday at 10:30p on ESPN right after the 9p premiere of The Announcement. The podcast dubbed The B.S. Report Special: Magic Johnson featuring Johnson and Simmons discussing topics surrounding the current state of the NBA heading toward the playoffs. This firs portion of the two-part broadcast will be available for download the morning of Friday, March 9th on Grantland.com, before the second part runs on-air.

The NFL has selected twenty current and former players including Terrell Suggs, D’Brickashaw Ferguson and Steven Jackson  for the league’s first-ever NFL Pro Hollywood Boot Camp at Universal Studios in Universal City, California. The program will run from April 2-5 and is will cover a wide range of topics in the movie industry. The four-day boot camp will offer a “comprehensive overview of creative disciplines in the film industry including screen writing, directing, producing and film financing.” Session leaders will include John Singleton as well as Robert Townsend and Kennan Ivory Wayans. Participants will have the opportunity to shoot and edit a short film at Universal Studios.

YouTube is teaming up with NBC Sports Group to stream the Olympic Games and will allow fans to see every single event live on NBCOlympics.com, according to Time, with around 3,000 hours of coverage. Live-streams will also be available on mobile devices.

Soccer journalist Steve Davis is joining the NBC Sports Digital team to serve as the featured writer for ProSoccerTalk on NBCSports.com. Davis will contribute regular posts and provide video reports to the site as well as serve as an occasional guest on NBC SportsTalk on NBC Sports Network.
