Cynopsis
3/08/07
Good Morning, it’s Thursday, March 8, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
Another major change is expected at a broadcast network evening news – CBS Evening News is reportedly poised to replace its Executive Producer Rome Hartman and the rumor mill has Rick Kaplan, former CNN and MSNBC bigwig as the new candidate. Nothing official emanating from either camp.
Rosie O’Donnell has a new TV icon in her sights — Fox’s American Idol. On ABC’s The View, Rosie referred to Idol as being “sexist and weight-ist” (I know, it’s not a real word) referring to Frenchie Davis being booted off the show in season two after revealing photos of her were disbursed on the internet. Rosie compares the show’s reaction to Davis to this season’s scandal with contestant Antonella Barba who also had revealing pictures of her (real or otherwise) on the internet. Barba was not booted. Nigel Lythgoe, Executive Producer of American Idol released this statement Wednesday:
- “Without wishing to add to the obvious self-promotion of Ms. O’Donnell, I feel as though I must refute her absurd and ridiculous claims that American Idol is racist and/or weightist. Ms. O’Donnell has, once again, spoken without thought or knowledge. Viewers need only look at the show tonight to realize that American Idol constantly confirms to America that talent has nothing to do with weight or color.”
While it would be nice if that were the end of this scuffle, smart money suggests there’s more to come.
Star Jones Reynolds will return to Court TV as host of a live, one-hour daytime talk show set to premiere later this year. Star, whose career began at Court TV in 1991 as a legal commentator, will also hold the title of Executive Editor. Her new national show, which is still waiting for a name, will offer analysis on current crime and justice stories from news and popular culture.
ABC Family has acquired the film The Sound of Music from 20th Century Fox for a fee of $3 million over a three year term beginning next month, reports Variety. The deal includes an annual play on ABC television network between October and December, which follows how the broadcast networks have been airing the film for the past several years – right around the Christmas holiday. ABC Family will be able to air the film up to seven times each year during the month of January – September. The Sound of Music will first air on ABC Family – uncut – over the April 6 weekend.

Deuce Three Productions, the production company headed by Academy Award winning writer/director/producer Curtis Hanson and his partner Carol Fenelon, has made a multi-year agreement with CBS Paramount Network Television. Hanson and Fenelon will produce, create and develop all genres for television in this overall deal.
CBS’ comedy pilot The Captain from CBS Paramount TV starring Fran Kranz has added Jeffrey Tambor to the cast. The story is set in an old and historic Hollywood apartment building where writer Kranz lives. Tambor plays another writer living in the same building.
ABC comedy pilot The Call from 20th Century Fox TV about a team of paramedics, has added Kal Penn to the lineup which also includes Kali Rocha as the team’s boss.
The media company, Next New Networks headed by CEO Herb Scannell, has plans to debut 101 micro-networks during the next five years, with each targeting a different community or brand on the internet and each having its own website. Every month one to three new networks will roll out and the first six networks (five of which launch today) will offer 3-8 minute shows with new regularly scheduled episodes airing either daily or weekly. The shows will also appear on iTunes and YouTube and viewers are encouraged to submit, share and distribute network content. The six new networks are:
- Channel Frederator ( www.channelfrederator.com) – cartoons sent in by viewers and updated weekly.
- Fast Lane Daily (www.fastlanedaily.com) – news from the showrooms and design studios of automakers around the world.
- PulpSecret (www.pulpsecret.com) – dedicated comic book news and culture, featuring The PulpSecret Report produced by David Levin
- Threadbanger (www.threadbanger.com) – centers on fashion designers, featuring Thread Heads a weekly DIY fashion showcase
- VOD Cars (www.VODCars.com) – we’re talking cars … all cars … just cars … a lot of cars
- Veracifier (coming soon) – will focus on reporting, editorials and ideas plus a daily show from blogger Joshua Micah Marshall’s Talking Points Memo
The Weather Channel will launch a new high-definition network in September, operating out of a new HD studio next door to its current headquarters in Atlanta. The HD plan calls for the installation of new systems and operations to present the weather in entirely new ways. So far, DirecTV is the first distributor set to debut TWC in HD this fall, with talks happening with all distributors from cable and satellite to telco.
MTV Networks plans to dramatically increase the number of web sites it operates throughout the world, part of master plan new digital president Mike Salmi calls “Atlas.” Plans include constructing websites around every personality and aspect of its shows hoping to catch younger viewers with their device of choice-TV, internet, cell phone or iPod, giving them total control of how they want to access it. Expect more archived material and more user-generated content, which visitors can mash together with MTV-created video.
