In the continued cable retransmission battle between ABC Disney/WABC-TV and Cablevision threatening to affect viewers in the Tri-State area, both parties yesterday released statements in response to their own positions. Rebecca S. Campbell, President/GM of WABC-TV (ABC7) said, “It’s time for Cablevision to stop spinning this issue and get serious about doing right by their customers. The fact is that, over and over again, Cablevision picks fights with programmers, and it is Cablevision subscribers who suffer the loss. The inconvenient truth about Cablevision is that it pockets hundreds of millions of dollars in subscriber fees each year by carrying ABC7. Dropping our station would be the latest insult. Their customers should know they have choices: They can switch service now and take their business to a provider that values them and isn’t threatening them with the loss of programming every few months, or get us free-over-the-air.” Later yesterday afternoon, Cablevision issued this statement, “We believe Senator Kerry is correct and ABC Disney should not pull the plug and should work with us in good faith to reach an agreement that is fair for Cablevision customers. Cablevision already pays ABC Disney more than $200 million a year for their programming, and now they want $40 million in new fees, a 20 percent increase, for exactly the same channels. ABC Disney should not put viewers in the middle and instead work with us to reach agreement.” In addition, politicians are weighing in on the retransmission argument between ABC Disney/WABC and Cablevision. Congressman Joe Barton (R-TX), penned a letter to FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski. An excerpt from his letter states: “As the deadline approaches for the end of the retransmission consent negotiations over carriage of ABC signals within Cablevision’s New York service area, I can lend my voice to those that have expressed hope they will reach a deal. I would also like to express my view, however, that actual discussion of the deal is best left between the respective companies and their viewers, free from government interference or cajoling. The alternative is to ask the government to weigh the relative value of carriage and of particular programming. This is a risky proposition.” Comedy Central premieres the 14th season of South Park, beginning March 17 at 10p with seven new episodes. Also, on April 14, the animated comedy presents its 200th episode. CMT serves up original programming on a new primetime block on Fridays titled CMT Adventure Country starting April 9. The one-hour block includes Gator 911 at 9p with 10-episodes and Danger Coast at 930p also with 10 episodes. Gator 911 is produced by 12 Forward Entertainment and Danger Coast is produced by ITV Studios, Inc. Logo brings back its sketch comedy series The Big Gay Sketch Show from executive producer Rosie O’Donnell for a third season beginning April 13 at 10p. Several cast members are returning including Paolo Andino, Colman Domingo, Julie Goldman, Stephen Guarino, Jonny McGovern, Kate McKinnon and Nicol Paone. Throughout the season many celebrities will make special guest stints on the show including Rosie O’Donnell, Sharon Osbourne, Isaac Mizrahi, Andy Cohen, Bethenny Frankel, Julianna Margulies, Andre Leon Talley and Rachel Dratch. The Big Gay Sketch Show, produced by Oh Really? Productions will have eight, half-hour episodes for its third season. Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos) landed the lead role in ABC’s drama pilot 187 Detroit, per THR. The plot takes a true and funny perspective about Detroit’s top homicide unit as seen through the eyes of a fictitious documentary film crew. Imperioli will play Fitch, a smart and touch long-time detective with a short fuse and a top-notch record within the division. British actor Jason Isaacs will star in FOX’s drama pilot Pleading Guilty which lifts the contingency on the project from Peter Chernin’s company and 20th TV. Pleading Guilty is a legal thriller based on the novel of the same name by Scott Turow about embezzlement, bookmaking, off-shore banking and more. Isaacs will play Mack, a cop-turned-attorney who is charged with investigating the disappearance of the firm’s star litigator. Three were added to ABC pilots: Jon Seda joins the dramedy pilot Cutthroat; Lindsay Price nabbed the lead in the comedy pilot Who Gets the Parents?; and Eliza Coupe will co-star in the comedy pilot Happy Endings, cites THR. Three join Matt LeBlanc on Episodes the Showtime/BBC comedy series: Claire Forlani, Kathleen Rose Perkins and Stephen Mangan. Blair Underwood got “elected” by NBC to portray the US President on the network’s drama pilot The Event. The project is described as a thriller, serving up different perspectives about character Sean (Jason Ritter), a regular guy who is fighting the mysterious conspiracy that wants to assassinate the US president (Underwood). Scott Porter (Friday Night Lights) will next appear in The CW’s drama pilot presentation Nomads as one of the leads, reports THR. Nomads is about three young backpackers who earn money doing secret assignments for the CIA. ~ RATINGS ~
