~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Katie Couric’s future role on television is still not official though CBS Television Distribution announced it is the top company in the running to distribute Couric’s proposed daytime talk show beginning fall 2012.  Couric’s contract as the anchor of CBS Evening News expires June 4 and before she begins a talk show hosting gig next year, Couric will maintain some on-air news presence by contributing to CBS’ 60 Minutes, according to various reports.  As part of Couric’s contract with CBS, there is a clause attached giving CBS the option to match any offers she may receive before June 4.  To date, NBC has indicated interest in distributing Couric’s daytime talk show; Warner Bros. has also pitched to be the project distributor. Couric is further involved in developing a multi-platform production company with former NBC Universal CEO Jeff Zucker, who will serve as CEO and the talk show’s executive producer.

Exploring the mysteries of how the US states got their shapes, History Channel ordered the new one-hour series, How the States Got Their Shapes hosted by Brian Unger (Comedy Central’s Daily Show).  Unger will travel the US and uncover why the borders of some states are so unusual and how they evolved due to religion, politics and culture clashes.  The new series launches May 3 at 10p and is produced by Half Yard Productions. 

Bilingual cable network, mun2 and Telemundo’s Telemundo Studios will commence production on RPM MIAMI, a first-time original drama series for mun2 that is similar to a novela though referred to as a “dramela.” RPM MIAMI has 13 episodes and will air weekly starting May 1 at 10p.

Docu-series One Born Every Minute set inside the maternity ward at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio was picked up for a second season by Lifetime Television.  The network granted ten new one-hour episodes of the series produced by Reveille.  Since its debut on February 1, One Born Every Minute has averaged 831,000 total viewers in its Tuesday 10p time period.  The series offers an in-depth look at the drama, humor and emotion of child birth.

BET and Nielsen report the season four finale of The Game on Tuesday night at 10p attracted 4.4 million viewers and also delivered a 3.30 coverage rating.  Over its fourth run, The Game reached more than 17 million viewers since the season premiere on January 11.

Upfront 2011: Bravo Media

In its upfront announcement, Bravo Media boasted continued ratings success with its programming and the gain of 150 new advertisers in 2010 alone. According to IAG Research, Bravo delivers the most affluent, educated and engaged audience in the cable entertainment realm as well as being the top cable network in brand recall.  For its 2011 slate, Bravo is further adding 20% more in original programming hours.  On the innovation front, Bravo also introduces its first integrated transmedia play into its Top Chef franchise. When Top Chef 9 premieres, Bravo will layer the show’s storyline to viewers across mobile, online, tablets, social media and on-air. For its 2011-2012 schedule, Bravo unveiled details on 11 new series pick-ups and 5 returning series.

New series include:

  • Interior Therapy with Jeff Lewis  Lewis, known as a neurotic house flipper takes on a new role as a therapist to homeowners.  Lewis will observe homeowners, diagnose their problems and redesign their spaces and their lives in the process. From Authentic Entertainment.
  • It’s a Brad Brad World (wt)  Trendsetter and former assistant to Rachel Zoe, Brad Goreski opens his own business venture and tries to maintain his personal life. Docu-series from Shed Media.
  • The Therapists  Series follows the professional and personal lives of top private therapists in Los Angeles. Produced by Intuitive Entertainment.
  • Mad Fashion  Series follows outrageous celebrity fashion designer and former Project Runway alum Chris March and his eccentric team as they create one-of-kind designs for their loyal customers. From Matt Westmore Media and No Regrets Entertainment.
  • Million Dollar Listing NY  After revealing expensive properties in California, this new series version spotlights luxury properties on the East Coast.  Produced by World of Wonder.
  • Miss Advised  Documentary project follows three single relationship experts on and off the job.  From RelativityREAL and Blondie Girl Productions.
  • Most Eligible: Dallas  Docu-series follows a group of Texas socialites as they date and look for true love.  Produced by Pink Sneakers.
  • Project Soulmate  New York matchmaker Lori Zaslow is determined to find love for her Manhattan-based clients while maintaining her own successful marriage and juggling motherhood. From Intuitive Entertainment.
  • Ready to Wear (wt)  Series follows four eclectic employees at the Second Time Around high-end consignment shop in New York City.  Leftfield Pictures is producing.
  • Roble and Co.  Chef Roble Ali is used to cooking for Red Carpet events and demanding celebrities and now he is running his own catering business in Brooklyn with his older sister as his business partner. Red Line Films produces.
  • Tabatha Takes Over  Tabatha Coffey is ready to transform more small businesses, not just salons, in this new series taking her across the country. Reveille produces.

Bravo is renewing five series offering second season renewals to Top Chef Just Desserts and The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills; a third season pick up of Bethenny Ever After; and season four nods to The Real Housewives of Atlanta and Tabatha’s Salon Takeover.  Additionally, Bravo’s Rocco’s Dinner Party is set to launch this summer.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Mnet signed new carriage agreements with Comcast to launch the network on its D1 digital tier in Chicago, Boston, San Francisco and Sacramento by September 1, 2011.  These four major market additions will allow Mnet to reach overall distribution in nine out of the top ten DMAs. Mnet is a nationally distributed network aiming at English-speaking Asian Americans and fans of Asian pop culture.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Shaftesbury concluded production on the 13-episode half-hour food adventure series, From Spain With Love: with Annie Sibonney.  This series is the first to come from Shaftesbury’s new factual entertainment unit.  The series was filmed on location throughout Spain and explores the culinary culture of the country with host Annie Sibonney.  Shaftesbury is bringing the series to MIPTV and it will premiere on Food Network in Canada and Cooking Channel in the US this May.

Vinessa Antoine (Being Erica, Soul Food) landed a recurring role on Syfy’s drama series Haven for its second season.  Antoine will play the role of Evidence “Evi” Ryan, a former con artist and love interest of Duke’s (Eric Balfour) who remains as beautiful and as conniving as ever. Season two of Haven with 13 episodes will begin production this Friday in Nova Scotia with a planned premiere on Syfy this summer. Entertainment (eOne) Television and Big Motion Pictures produce Haven in association with Piller/Segan/Shepherd. 

Longtime TV actors Hector Elizondo and Nancy Travis both cast in Tim Allen’s yet-to-be-titled comedy pilot for ABC.  Travis nabbed the female lead playing Vanessa, Allen’s smart and loving wife while Elizondo will play Allen’s boss Ed.  Twentieth Century Fox TV is producing the pilot.

Fox 21, a unit of Twentieth Century Fox TV is readying five new reality series:

  • Model Apartment from Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy will take an insider look at the competitive world of modeling in New York.  Murphy and Dante Di Loreto (also currently EP on Glee) will serve as executive producers along with Douglas Keeve. Project sold to A&E.
  • Family Bonding takes on the idea of what happens when a parent and their teenager are handcuffed together for 45 hours.  From Krasnow Productions and also sold to A&E.
  • All About Annette, a comedy project centered on photo stylist Annette Joseph. Offers are being fielded from female-targeted cable networks.
  • Geek Meets Girl, a syndicated dating strip show based on Beauty and the Geek. The half-hour show is from Ashton Kutcher’s Katalyst Films and producer Nick Santora. To date, the show has received clearances in 80% of the US.
  • Come Back is a result of Fox 21’s relationship with Live Nation from the Glee Tour.  Live Nation will host a live stage show competition spotlighting one-hit wonders and past popular performers giving them a chance to win a spot on a major tour.  Show project will be shopped to broadcast networks.

Tuesday A18-49 Analysis:   ABC chalked up a Tuesday night win among A18-49 with a 3.4/9, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  CBS came on strong during 8p with NCIS at 3.9/11 while ABC’s re-cap of the new season of Dancing with the Stars: The Story So Far was second at 2.8/8. ABC offered up the season’s first Dancing with the Stars Results Show topping at 9p with a 4.3/11 trailed by CBS’ NCIS: Los Angeles at 3.5/9.  ABC
followed up successfully at 10p with the new series launch Body of Proof posting a 3.1/8 while a three-way tie existed for second place between CBS’ The Good Wife, NBC’s Parenthood and the average of Univision’s combo Triunfo del Amor and Mexico vs. Venezuela all at 1.9/5 each.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

NBCUniversal International reorganized its management structure now that the Comcast majority ownership went into effect on January 29.  All appoints are effective immediately:

  • Jeff Shell is President, NBCUniversal International based in London.
  • Under the Television unit, Kevin MacLellan named as President/International Television, reporting to Jeff Shell to manage production, distribution and channels.
  • Reporting to Kevin MacLellan is Belinda Menendez as President/NBCUniversal TV Distribution and Universal Networks International as well as Michael Edelstein as President/International Television Production.
  • Under the International Film category, the Studio will keep leadership positions intact with Jeff Shell working in tandem with David Kosse, President/International, Universal Pictures and Eddie Cunningham, President UPIE.
  • NBCUniversal International  Corporate division named Rowan Conn to the new position as CFO, reporting to Jeff Shell and Lynn Calpeter.  Rowan will supervise the financial efforts for all International businesses.
  • Alfonso Marone is SVP/Business Development with responsibility of strategic planning and growth efforts.
  • Andrew Hall is SVP/Legal heading all legal matters pertaining to International business.
  • Erik Schmidt is SVP/Human Resources to manage international HR activities.
  • Denise Bassett is VP/Communications to spearhead corporate communications across the international assets, media relations and internal communication efforts.

James Murdoch, son of News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch, was elevated to Deputy COO for the company and will additionally serve as Chairman/CEO of News Corp.’s international operations.  Currently based in London where he is Non-Executive Chairman of BSkyB and in charge of News Corp.’s European and Asian operations, James will move to New York. James has been with the company for 15 years and also sits on the company’s Board.

FremantleMedia promoted Marika Makaroff to the newly-created role as Creative Director/FremantleMedia Finland starting this Friday.  Marika will take on a larger role in the areas of creative development and new commercial opportunities.

Former Co-Anchor of ESPN’s SportsCenter, Josh Elliott is joining ABC News as News Reader for Good Morning America.  Josh will join ABC in the coming weeks per ABC News President Ben Sherwood.  Josh will soon replace Juju Chang who is taking on a full-time position as a Special Correspondent and fill-in Anchor for ABC News’ Nightline.

Simon Foster advances to SVP/Digital Publishing and Business Development with GlassBOX Television Inc. Simon is in charge of the company’s entertainment and lifestyle digital media business functions with scope over product development, audience engagement, content and sales.  He has been with GlassBOX Television since 2008.

Michael Weiss upped to Director/Sales in New York at Eagle Television Sales, a division of Katz Television Group.

The Advocate bumped Scott McPherson to Creative Director for the Advocate Group which consists of the print edition, Advocate.com and Advocate video in addition to HIV Plus magazine and its companion website.

Scott Koondel takes on a dual role as SVP/Corporate Licensing and Distribution for CBS Corporation where he will be involved with optimizing the value of domestic distribution deals for CBS-owned content and content CBS has acquired format and distribution rights.  In addition to his new scope of duties, Scott will continue in his present position as President /Distribution for CBS Television Distribution, reporting to John Nogawski, President, CBS Television Distribution.  For his new role he will report to Joseph Ianniello, EVP/CFO, CBS Corporation.
