Good morning. It’s Thursday, March 30, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Can you hear me now is not a joke when after years of listening to music too loudly destroys your hearing, and combine that the natural hearing loss that comes with age and … yikes.  Thus, Apple has released a new software update for its iPod nano and fifth generation iPod units that will provide users with the ability to set a maximum volume limit based on their personal taste.  Apple is also positioning this software as one that parents can use to choose a maximum volume level setting for their kid’s iPods, which parents can then lock in place.  The software can be downloaded from Apple’s website, where consumers can also find further information about safe listening.


Foothill Entertainment, Inc. will attend MIPTV with a slate of programming currently in development including Snapper and Gododo, two new animated properties both from UK-based Phew!! and two co-development projects with Create Media Ventures, Iconicles and Tutu Lulu.  On the completed program front, Foothill will be offering the live action series Boogies Diner, Wish-A-Roo Park, which originally bowed on PBS in the US, and the made for TV movie American Black Beauty.

  • Snapper takes place in the Amazon jungle.  Foothill brought the Snapper pilot together by tapping Malaysian CGI animation studio POV/Fat Lizard, which will serve as the animation house for the series and has lined up a chunk of production financing from Malaysian interests.
  • Gododo is a surreal fantasy and a comedy that revolves around the last living dodo birdTargeted to younger kids, Gododo features 3D animation from India’s DQ Entertainment.
  • Iconicles is a preschool property that is being developed for multi-media programming for phuuz entertainment’s, in conjunction with BBC Worldwide.
  • Targeted to girls Tutu Lulu comes from New Zealand’s Papageno Productions.


Nickelodeon’s 19th Annual Kids’ Choice Awards will be simulcast on TurboNick, Nick’s broadband video service via, this Saturday, April 1, 8-9:30p.  Additionally, the KCA’s pre-show will be streamed on TurboNick from 7-8p, hosted from the Orange Carpet and backstage by Lil’ JJ.  Online kids will be able to choose from several different cameras to see what is going on and several other personalized KCA related activities.  There will also be blog coverage of the arrivals, backstage and so on.  As always kids are invited to vote on select categories leading up to the show as well as in real time on Saturday for a special category.  Following the KCA on April 1st will make a list of this year’s winners available, along with a half-hour version of the awards show which will be featured on TurboNick.

Music recording artist Chris Brown will perform two singles from his self-titled debut album on Cartoon Network, Friday April 7, between 9:30-10p during its Fridays programming block (7p-12a).  The 16 yr-old Brown is a platinum selling artist, and will perform his chart topping single including Run It as well as his newest release Yo (Excuse Me Miss).

Vancouver’s Bardel Entertainment has inked some new pre-MIPTV sales for its series/movie trilogy Silverwing.  Bardel’s agent, B Wooding Media Ltd brokered a broadcast agreement with Jetix Latin America for all 13×22 episodes and the 3×72 trilogy.  Germany’s KIKA also picked up the TV rights to the trilogy.  Based on Kenneth Oppel’s 3 kid’s novels and their characters, the series follows the adventures of a teenage bat named Shade.

Shaftesbury Sales Company heads to MIPTV next week with a roster of series and movies including programming for kids/families such as:

  • Booky Makes Her Mark, a family movie produced for CBC starring Megan Follows;
  • Wanderbirds (52 x 11 min) an animated preschool series about the adventures of a family of penguins who are relocating to the north pole;
  • Life with Derek, the live-action comedy about a blended family; and
  • Terry  the TV movie starring Shawn Ashmore that tells the story of a 22 yr-old Canadian runner, which was recently acquired by the BBC and Daro (for distribution in Central and Eastern Europe).

The Entertainment Software Rating Board has released a new national study which finds that of 83% of American parents of kids who play video games are aware of the ESRB ratings, and 74% use the ratings when they purchase games for their kids.  These numbers are up by single digits from last year’s ESRB study.  The study, conducted by Peter D. Hart Research Associates earlier this month, surveyed 500+ parents with kids ages 3-17 who play video games.


Dimensional Branding Group, a licensing and promotions company, is set to bring the tween girl brand Zodiac Girlz to Licensing 2006 International this June in NYC.  Created by 3 Muses, Zodiac Girlz is a web-based astrology-themed brand and the exclusive astrology content provider for Yahooligans!  3 Muses recently launched The Cosmic Friendship Collection, a new line of dolls based on the Zodiac Girlz characters and the 12 signs of the Zodiac.  Additionally, 3 Muses has entered into a development deal with Portfolio Entertainment, to develop an animated action adventure series about the characters.  (

BKN International AG’s new Barcelona BKN New Media SL office has inked a five-year US$1.8 million deal with Enciclopedia Catalana, S.A.U., a Spanish DVD distributor, to handle distribution of BKN’s Classic Collection I films and TV series including A Christmas Carol, Robin Hood, Jungle Book, Legend of the Dragon and Zorro: Generation Z.

KOL, America Online’s kid service, has inked new licensing deals for its original Princess Natasha online series.  New licensing partners for the brand include: Brewster Wallcovering Company (wallpapers, boarders, murals, wall appliques etc); Colorbok, Inc. (activity/craft sets, party favors); Dream Apparel Group, LLC (kid’s sleepwear, robes/lounge pants/boxers and swimwear); FAB/Starpoint L.L.C (leather goods and lunch goods bags, straws and school supplies); H.I.S. International Corp. (girls clothing); JP Imports Corp. (beach and hooded towels); and Zizzle (hand-held LCD games).

Nelvana, serving as the international distributor outside of the US for The Fairly OddParents has inked a raft of QSR promotional deals for the animated series including: KFC in Mexico, a six-week kid’s meal promo launching in April; burger restaurant Wimpy a year-long promo in the UK and a month-long summer promo in South Africa; Quick restaurants will run summer character-based kid meal promotions in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Andorra and Monaco followed by Quick promotions in the UAE, Reunion Island and Algeria; Hardee’s summer promotions in the UAE, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bashrain, Oman, Lebanon and Jordan; a holiday promotion with Carl’s Jr. in Mexico.  Outside of the restaurant deals is a Kellogg’s three-month sweepstakes with the Fruit Loops brand.

Simon Property Group will host two kid-targeted marketing events this spring at its malls across the country. 

  • The annual Simon Kidgits Club Book Blast! a literacy effort running through April 29.  Participating Book Blast! content partners this year include Harpers Collins, Lions Gate Films, Fisher Price, and Nelvana.  Celebrities (local and characters e.g. Miss Spider and Max and Ruby etc.) will attend the events and will read classic books as well as Adventures in the Park, Simon Kidgits Club’s first book.  Book Blast will feature local book drives.
  • Kids are invited to get their photos take with the Easter Bunny as part of the Wonkafied at malls through April 15.  Simon Brand Ventures, the business-to-consumer unit of SPG, Inc. has inked a sponsorship deal for Wonkafied with Nestle for its new Wonka Egg Hunt product line to provide snacks for kids visiting the Easter Bunny (e.g. samples of Sweetarts, Nerds and Laffy Taffy), as well as entertainment, signage etc.


Claudia Scott-Hansen has been appointed VP/US TV Distribution, Hit Entertainment.  She will be based in the NY office, and will report to London-based EVP/Worldwide TV Distribution, Alison Homewood.  Scott-Hansen will be responsible for all US TV distribution of Hit properties including Bob the Builder, Barney & Friends, Thomas & Friends, Fireman Sam, Angelina Ballerina and The Wiggles.  For the past decade Scott-Hansen has toiled for the BBC in various Sr. management positions in TV Syndication, Licensing & Merchandising and Local Format Production, most recently as Director/PBS Syndication responsible for the distribution of BBC programming including kid’s programs.
