Good morning, it’s Thursday, March 29, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
Hang on there, Tribune watchers – it may not be Sam Zell‘s $8 billion bid after all. The New York Times reports this morning that Tribune has heard again from Eli Broad and Ronald Burkle who have requested additional financial information, and Tribune has responded. It was expected Tribune would finish this up by Saturday, but with Broad and Burkle presumably back in the mix, that schedule may be put off. Apparently Broad and Burkle said Zell had received certain financial information that they had not, and now armed with that additional information may come back to sweeten their offer.

Notes from the Underbelly will premiere now on Thursday, April 12 at 10p with two back to back episodes. Through out its run, ABC will air the show with double episodes at 10p. Originally the show had been scheduled for Wednesdays at 930 as of April 11. This is great news for Notes which has now been moved away from the final half hour of Fox’s expanded Results show, and as a bonus, gets Grey’s Anatomy as a lead-in. With the new schedule, there is no news yet on what happens with Men in Trees currently scheduled to return on Thursday the 12th of April at 10p.
Meanwhile, over at Fox, the premiere of Hell’s Kitchen has been pushed up to June 4th at 9p, using the new Spielberg/Burnett reality series On the Lot as a lead-in (On the Lot debuts on May 22 at 8p). On Tuesdays, following the results show for On the Lot at 8p, will be ‘Til Death at 830p, followed by House at 9p. And on Fridays, as of June 8th – Bones returns at 8p followed by Standoff at 9p. Oxygen has ordered 6 episodes of a Bad Girls Road Trip, a spin off of The Bad Girls Club from Bunim-Murray. The spin-off series is scheduled to make its network debut in June. A second season of The Bad Girls Club has been ordered for a late 2007 premiere.
NBC has reupped its deal with the Miss Universe Organization, which will keep both the Miss Universe and Miss USA pageants on NBC thru 2010. Telemundo will also continue to air the Spanish-language version of the pageants. The one piece that was missing from this re-sign is the Miss Teen USA, which NBC opted not to continue. The Miss Universe Organization will continue to produce Miss Teen USA and will seek a new network to air the annual late-summer pageant.
UPFRONT UPDATE: USA NETWORK
USA Network will introduce two new projects, has five original scripted project in development, and will bring back four of its long-running series:
- The Starter Wife – premiering May 31, The Starter Wife is a six-hour special based on the novel by Gigi Levangie Grazer about life after divorce and one woman’s desire to change herself after being married to a Hollywood mogul for years. Debra Messing, Joe Montegna, Judy Davis star in this production from NBC Universal Television Studio in association with 3 Arts Entertainment.
- Burn Notice – premieres June 28. A new drama series produced by Fox Television Studios starring Jeffrey Donovan, Gabrielle Anwar, Bruce Campbell and Sharon Gless. The storyline centers on a secret agent who becomes untouchable after hidden forces place a “burn notice” on him, thus ending his career as a spy.
In addition, USA has five new original scripted series in development:
- The Negotiator (wt) – an out-of-work FBI crisis negotiator becomes a relationship counselor in New York.
- American Girl – a timid female Wal-Mart greeter gets shot while on the job one day then afterwards becomes fearless.
- Family Values – a team of FBI agents pose as a normal family living together in the suburbs.
- The Oldest Rookie – a 43-year old man leaves his stable career to become a police rookie.
- Spying in High Heels – a fashionista becomes a detective and opens her own agency while tracking down her missing boyfriend.
USA will also return several of its long-running series to the line-up this summer:
- The 4400 – fourth season debuts June 17 at 9p
- The Dead Zone – sixth season begins June 17 at 10p
- Monk – sixth season premieres July 13 at 9p
- Psych – returns July 13 at 10p
Tom Conti has been cast in the Fox Victor Fresco comedy pilot from 20th Century Fox TV. The untitled comedy is about a young boy living in an over-achieving family who finds a small respite with his slightly off-kilter grandfather, played by Conti.

George Stewart was named SVP of Media Sales for online micro-network distributor Next New Networks. A sales veteran of online firms such as Yahoo! and Launch.com, George will execute a new three-pronged advertising strategy which includes collaborating with “pure product endemics” (products which are an essential fit with the network’s community) as well as “industry endemics” (relevant brands which aren’t always present in the community.) Royal Purple motor oil will begin a partnership with Next New Networks’ VOD Cars and Fast Lane Daily from April.
Eric Covert has been elevated to VP/Creative Content and Production, Disney-ABC Cable Networks Group, reporting to Adam Sanderson, SVP/Brand Marketing. Eric is charged with overseeing the creative content and strategy of productions that involve multiple divisions of The Walt Disney Company interacting with channels within Disney-ABC Cable Networks Group.
Bruce Pottash and Jon Birkhahn have been named EVPs of Legal and Business Affairs of CBS Television Distribution. Bruce will assume primary responsibility for legal matters pertaining to the production of programming produced by the group, West Coast syndication licensing, cable licensing and library programming. Jon will focus on production and development agreements with talent and senior program personnel, distribution agreements with key program suppliers, East Coast syndication licensing and corporate matters.
Cathy Tankosic has joined Magna Global Entertainment as EVP/Magna Global Entertainment. In this new position, Cathy will take a broad overview of the business process and will look for new ways of creating branded entertainment content. She will work with clients across multiple media platforms, building new relationships, new businesses, and expanding Magna Entertainment’s existing portfolio. She will be based in the company’s New York headquarters.
Hedda Muskat has been named Consulting Producer on WE‘s new show, Wife, Mom, Bounty Hunter debuting on April 20. Hedda brought the show to World of Wonder who sold it to WE.

TUESDAY – A18-49 Analysis: Despite some stiffer competition, FOX was still #1 Tuesday night at 10.0/27 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. NBC was second with 3.0/8, and next came ABC 2.8/8, CBS 2.2/6, UNIV 1.7/5, CW 1.0/3 and TELE 0.4/1. American Idol on FOX delivered double digit numbers at 8p with 10.4/29. At 9p, FOX continued in first place with House at 9.5/24. Then at 10p, NBC won with a new episode of Law & Order: SVU at 4.3/12, while the premiere of ABC’s The Great American Dream Vote tied for second along with CBS’ rerun of Shark with 1.9/5 each. Also this hour, UNIV’s debut of Nuestra Belleza Latina was third overall at 1.4/4.
