FOX pulled the plug on its comedy ‘Til Death after four seasons. The Sony Pictures Television-produced show has been airing on Sunday evenings at 7p. ABC also put its medical-themed comedy Scrubs on notice though has not officially cancelled the show despite the show’s star Zach Braff writing online the show is over.

HBO gave the animated comedy series The Ricky Gervais Show a sophomore season renewal. New half-hour episodes will go into production yet this year with a planned premiere in 2011. Current season episodes air on Friday nights at 9p with the finale airing on May 21. Gervais lends his voice to the show along with Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington. The Ricky Gervais Show is produced by Media Rights Capital in association with Wildbrain Entertainment for HBO Entertainment.

HBO also set the premiere date for its new drama series Treme on April 11 at 10p, airing first the 80-minute pilot episode followed by one-hour episodes. The ten-episode series is about musicians and chefs to ordinary citizens of New Orleans as they attempt to pick up their lives following the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The drama begins in the fall of 2005, three months after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, flooding 80% of the city, killing hundreds of and displacing thousands of residents. Any fictitious situations relayed in the series will be based on the actual chronology of political, economic and cultural events following the devastating storm. The ensemble cast includes Wendell Pierce, Khandi Alexander, Clarke Peters, Rob Brown, Steve Zahn, Kim Dickens, Melissa Leo, John Goodman, Michiel Huisman and Lucia Micarelli. Throughout the first season, several real-life New Orleanians as well as musicians and artists connected to the city will make cameo appearances including Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, Elvis Costello, Steve Earle and Kermit Ruffins among others.

In a report generated by Turner Research, television continues to see growth in the average number of viewing hours. In Q1 2009, total viewers spent 35.8 hours on average and in Q1 2010 total viewers spent 36.6 hours on average. Liberman Broadcasting, Inc. (LBI Media) made an affiliate agreement with Bakersfield-based JACO Communications LLC for Hispanic network Estrella TV to air on KBBV-TV in Bakersfield. With this deal, Estrella TV now expands its reach to 74% of the US Hispanic TV households and its affiliate count is up to an even 20. Bakersfield is the 29th largest Hispanic TV market in the US with an estimated 90,500 Latino households.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Katherine Heigl announced yesterday she will no longer be part of the cast of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy. Heigl asked series creator Shonda Rhimes to end her contract early and will not be returning for the current season’s last five episodes as previously planned. Therefore, the January 21 episode was her last as Dr. Isobel Stevens. Heigl cited her family as the reason she was leaving the show and not because of her growing film career. Recently, Heigl took a three-month family leave from the show after she adopted her daughter. ABC Studios in response to Heigl’s decision released this statement: “By mutual agreement, Katherine Heigl has ended her successful run as Dr. Isobel Stevens. The studio wishes her well. Everyone at Grey’s Anatomy is now focused on delivering a shocking season finale and a great show for seasons to come.”

Cheryl Hines (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Carrie Fisher were cast in the ABC comedy pilot Wright vs. Wrong, headlined by Debra Messing. Messing stars as Evelyn Wright, a strong-willed ambitious political personality who stands for a conservative, right-wing agenda though behind the scenes she is full of personal foibles and flaws. Hines will play Evelyn’s liberal counterpart who can’t stand her and Fisher will play Evelyn’s cranky manager.

Sarah Palin’s reality show about Alaska, produced in conjunction with Mark Burnett is landing on the Discovery Channel, reports People. Palin, the former governor of Alaska is supposedly earning $1 million per episode for the travelogue-style documentary show titled Sarah Palin’s Alaska where she will guide viewers around Alaska.
