This summer, STARZ launches the US version of the hit BBC series Torchwood: Miracle Day beginning July 8 at 10p. Starring Mekhi Phifer and Bill Pullman along with guest star Lauren Ambrose production on the series is currently underway in Los Angeles. Series stars from the original BBC version, John Barrowman and Eve Myles continue in the new edition and are joined by Alexa Havins and Arlene Tur.
Longest running reality series ever, The Real World is on tap for two more seasons after MTV approved installments 27 and 28. Presently in its 25th season, The Real World in Las Vegas last week averaged a 2.3 rating among P12-34 and 2.2 million total viewers. Casting is also happening now for the 26th season. Since its first season in 1992, The Real World has united young people of all walks of life, living together in such cities worldwide as Los Angeles, New York City, London, Paris, Sydney and Cancun among others. The series is produced for MTV by Bunim-Murray Productions.
Major League Baseball’s Opening Day is March 31 and MLB Network has its 2011 regular season schedule ready including the network’s first talk show, Intentional Talk. Beginning April 4 at 5p, the network debuts Intentional Talk, a live open forum show hosted by Kevin Millar and Chris Rose. Additionally, International Talk will simulcast on MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM Radio weekdays at 5p. MLB Network also is launching its live afternoon show The Rundown airing weekdays from 3-5p starting April 1 and 30 Games, 30 Clubs, 30 Days is back and also opens April 1 at 10p.
3D series, Treasure Houses of Britain in 3D debuts this Saturday at 8p via DIRECTV’s 3D channel, n3D. The one-hour five-episode series is being offered exclusively via DIRECTV and New York’s public television station, WNET and will tour some of Britain’s historical estates. DIRECTV will additionally air the series in 2D HD on The 101 Network.
Legendary actress, humanitarian and aids activist, Elizabeth Taylor died yesterday at the age of 79. Known for her violet eyes and for being the most recognizable movie star in the world, she made numerous memorable films from National Velvet (1944) that made her a star when she was just 12 years old to iconic films including Giant (1956), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) to her Oscar-winning performances in Butterfield 8 (1960), Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) and who can forget Cleopatra (1963). Throughout her prolific acting career, she made many notable television appearances, including a brief stint on ABC’s General Hospital in 1981, in several TV movies and miniseries like North and South (1985) and as the voice of “Maggie” in one episode of FOX’s The Simpsons in 1992.
- Turner Classic Movies (TCM) honors the life and career of Elizabeth Taylor with a 24-hour movie tribute on April 10 beginning at 6a with Lassie Come Home followed by many of her best movies including in primetime Cat on a Hot Tin Roof at 6p; Butterfield 8 at 8p; and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? at 10p.
- On BIO Channel tonight is a two-hour documentary BIO Remembers: Elizabeth Taylor at 8p revealing her private life and career.
- Also this Sunday, Fox Movie Channel remembers Elizabeth Taylor with an all-day movie marathon featuring the film Cleopatra beginning at 6a. Interspersed between the Cleopatra airings, the network will air a special Fox Legacy with Tom Rothman relating details on how the movie was made. Fox Legacy will air at 8p and again at 1a.
Upfront 2011: Crown Media Networks (Hallmark Channel & Hallmark Movie Channel)
At yesterdays press event for the upfront, Crown Media Holdings, Inc. President/CEO Bill Abbott said the company is repositioning its television and online media assets under a new umbrella name Crown Media Networks, replacing Hallmark Channels. A new logo was additionally revealed and fresh taglines for each network. The event presented the new programming offerings for both Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel.
Hallmark Channel: Using the new moniker, “365 Ways to Celebrate” the network will premiere 25 Hallmark Channel Original Movies throughout the 2011-2012 season coinciding with major holidays and comprising 500 hours of original content. A sampling of the titles include:
- Oliver’s Ghost – Premieres 4Q 2011 and stars Martin Mull and Rhea Perlman about 11-year old Oliver and his ability to see ghosts.
- Christmas Returns to Canaan – Premieres 4Q 2011, the sequel to the 2009 movie Christmas in Canaan with Billy Ray Cyrus once again headlining.
- A Princess For Christmas – Premieres 4Q 2011 and stars Sir Roger Moore and Katie McGrath. A story set in England at Christmastime about a newly-appointed legal guardian who struggles to parent her niece and nephew after the death of their parents.
- Cancel Christmas – Premieres December 2011 and stars Judd Nelson as Santa Claus who is told because the holiday has become too commercialized and material should be canceled.
- A Taste of Romance – Premieres 1Q 2012 and stars Teri Polo and James Patrick Stuart as rival restaurant owners.
- Chasing Leprechauns – Premieres 1Q 2012 and stars Adrian Pasdar as a New York corporate “fixer” who is sent to Ireland to close a deal on a smelting plant construction site that may house leprechauns.
- The Note 3 – Premieres 2Q 2012 and stars Genie Francis and Ted McGinley in the third installment of one of the network’s highest-rated movie series ever.
- The Music Teacher – Premieres 3Q 2012 – Hallmark Channel’s first foray into a movie musical about a high school music teacher who mounts a school musical production to raise funds to save the school’s music program.
New Hallmark Channel Original Series:
- Spirit Table – An inspiring new 13-episode unscripted half-hour series featuring Maya Angelou as she chats with fascinating people at her table. Series will debut on the network in 1Q 2012.
Hallmark Channel series addition:
- Frasier will begin on the network starting April 8.
Hallmark Channel further presented new original series, returning series and primetime specials as part of the network’s daily lifestyle block, Hallmark Channel Home. One new series will be introduced:
- Emeril’s Table – Hallmark Channel Original Series World Premiere in 4Q/date TBA; Chef Emeril Lagasse joins the Hallmark Channel Home lineup with a new cooking series showing viewers how to create delicious menus for family and friends. 52 half-hour episodes.
Returning Hallmark Channel Home original series:
- The Martha Stewart Show – Season 7 premieres in October with 140 one-hour episodes.
- Petkeeping with Marc Morrone – Season 2 debuts in January 2012 with 20 new half-hour episodes.
In addition, Hallmark Channel has two Martha Stewart Presents primetime specials, one for Halloween in October (date TBA) and the second for Christmas (premiere date TBA). Other holiday specials announced will feature a partnership with Hallmark Cards for the network’s first-ever multi-platform integration surrounding the animated character, Jingle The Husky Pup.
Hallmark Movie Channel: “Stories That Connect” is the network’s new tagline. Hallmark Movie Channel, a Nielsen-rated network since second quarter 2010 and now in 40 million homes, says it will increase to 50 million homes in the next 18 months. The network has eight new original movies lined up for the new season. Highlights of the Hallmark Movie Channel Original Premiere films include:
- Finding A Family – Premieres October 15 at 8p starring Kim Delaney in a film based on the true story about Alex, a super-smart teenager who enters foster care after his mother is injured in a car accident and has a dream to attend Harvard.
- Goodnight For Justice 2 – Premieres in January; executive producer and star Luke Perry reunites with director and friend Jason Priestley in a sequel to Hallmark Movie Channel’s highest-rated film ever. (in development)
- Love’s Playing Our Song – Premieres in September about a shy though handsome photographer who hires a popular girl to be his dating coach. (in development)

Verizon’s FiOS TV added BET HD to its lineup offering music, entertainment and news programming. BET HD is currently available to FiOS TV subscribers in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Florida, New Jersey, downstate New York and the Philadelphia area and as of today, the network will launch in Maryland, Virginia, Harrisburg, Buffalo and Syracuse and to the remaining FiOS TV customers by March 29.
Remarkable Content Group (RCG) named the exclusive distributor of Kaufman Films for its television series and projects. Kaufman Films is behind the first season of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Orange County and The 100 Scariest Movie Moments and A&E’s Watching the Detectives among others.
Zach Galifianakis, currently starring in HBO’s comedy Bored to Death, made a first-look deal with the premium network. Galifianakis’ first project is a pilot presentation featuring comedian and former amateur baseball player, Brody Stevens playing himself in a mockumentary-style comedy. Galifianakis will also appear in the project and will additional write and produce along with Mike Gibbons.
CBS’ untitled sports radio comedy pilot helmed by Damon Wayans tapped Eliza Dushku (Dollhouse) for the role of Casey. The plot is inspired by Colin Cowherd’s brash sports talk show on ESPN.

QVC is looking for men and women who have hosted television, online broadcasts, radio or live events. Ideal candidates should be energetic, intelligent and enthusiastic with a natural curiosity plus have a passion for sales and be a quick thinker and a good listener. Hosts should be friendly, credible and entertaining with a sense of style and fashion. Tuesday A18-49 Analysis: CBS produced a winning lineup Tuesday night delivering a 3.1/9 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. Primetime opened at 8p with CBS in #1 with NCIS at 3.8/12 with NBC’s The Biggest Loser at #2 with 2.8/9. Things flipped at 9p with NBC’s The Biggest Loser topping at 3.3/10 and CBS’ NCIS: Los Angeles was next at 3.2/9. CBS polished off the last victory of the night as The Good Wife won at 10p with 2.1/6 and ABC’s special Best in Film was a close second at 2.0/6.

Independent research group, The Council for Research Excellence (CRE) named three new members: Laura Cowan, Media Strategist at RIESTER; Dr. Janet Gallent, VP/Consumer Insights and Innovation Research inside NBCUniversal’s Strategic Research Group; and Michael Nathanson, Managing Director and Head/US Media and Internet at Nomura Securities.
Bloomberg L.P. established the Bloomberg Media Group, a consumer media group encompassing the company’s television, print, radio, mobile and digital media assets. In so doing, the company appointed Paul Bascobert, President of Bloomberg Businessweek as Head/Business Operations for the new entity. Paul will work with all business divisions to spur strategy and revenue increases for the new Group. He will continue in his present role as President/Bloomberg Businessweek while reporting to Andy Lack, CEO, Bloomberg Media Group.
Effective immediately, Jason Naft is the new Director/Sales at WOFL FOX 35 and also WRBW My65 and WOGX FOX 51, owned by Fox Television Station group. Jason will head all sales efforts and reports to Dennis Welsh, VP/GM.

The CW bumped Dory Foster to VP/West Coast Sales to oversee the West Coast-based national advertisers, agencies and clients representing TV, online and mobile. Dory reports to Brian Doherty, SVP/National Sales, The CW.
Canada’s GlassBOX Television Inc. hired Marcia Martin for the newly-minted role as SVP/Creative Content, Commissioned and In-House Programming. Marcia will have responsibility over all facets of original content including development, production, co-production and licensing for the company’s BITE TV, AUX TV and Travel & Escape, working with in-house and independent producers.
Longtime broadcaster Jose Valle becomes President/Univision Radio with Univision Communications Inc. Jose’s new position is effective immediately. Previously, Jose was VP/GM of Univision Radio Los Angeles managing the stations owned by Univision in that market.
