Cynopsis: DIGITAL
3/22/07
Good Morning, it’s Thursday, March 22, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
FoxNews.com launched Ureport, the latest citizen journalism initiative featuring a place to upload photos, text and video reports. The interface will even accept pictures or video from a cell phone. NeighborhoodAmerica is the technology provider, which also powering CBS News’ Springboard service.
MTV Tr3s launched a cross-carrier, bilingual mobile channel targeted at the network’s key demo–Latino youth. MTV Tr3s Mobile features Latino and crossover music downloads, ringtones and video content from such artists as Nelly Furtado, Luis Fonsi and Paulina Rubio. The service should be a good fit, as Latino teens are more likely to own media capable phones than non-Latinos and more likely to use their phones to watch video content, according the network’s research.
Midway Games is developing a multi-genre interactive game based on Adult Swim’s Aqua Teen Hunger Force. The game will mix action/adventure, golf, combat, and cart racing, scheduled for release on Sony’s PlayStaton2 platform this fall. Oh yes–Master Shake, Frylock and Meatwad are starring in a movie too. Aqua Teen Hunger Force Movie Film For Theaters opens April 13. It will be interesting to see how the promotional mishap in Boston affects box office results.
Bob Bowman, President and CEO of MLB Advanced Media LP outlined a strategy that was music to the ears of Video On the Net conference attendees this week. MUSIC is his personal acronym for the key strategic points to delivering live video over the internet. MLB.com, which has been streaming live games since 2002, has been a pioneer in this area and has learned much from putting up 20,000 hours of live baseball a year and encoding it for distribution on a variety of devices. This year subscriptions to live games will go for $14.95 per month or $89.95 for the entire season. By the way, MUSIC stand or:
- Mass: The goal should be to scale to handle million of simultaneous viewers, as the world is a big place and the number of broadband connected homes is going no where but up.
- User Authenticity: What you put up has got to be real, in his case real major league baseball.
- Speed: You have to have a fast connection to enjoy live video.
- Interactive: think outside the box. MLB.com is working on a mosaic option to allow subscribers to stream 6 games at once, with scrolling messaging up top to keep track of fantasy players.
- Convergence: This is a misnomer, as true convergence “ain’t gonna happen,” says Bowman. Content has to be customized for the device it’s being consumed on.
Speaking of games, Microsoft suspects someone has been monkeying around with live “Microsoft Points” accounts set up to allow Xbox Live users to purchase games, TV shows and other content. The company is investigating reports of hacking that have been circulating on several online forums, according to Cnet.com.
Linear, VOD and SVOD premium video service Here! acquired the North American rights to No Regret, one of the first South Korean films to deal with homosexuality. Fortissimo Films was the sales agent at AFM. Regent Releasing will handle the theatrical release of the film, planned for summer of 2008.
Multiplatform VOD/online free music service Music Choice will feature the songs and videos of young J Xavier through April 15. The 14-year old hip-hop star will be the focus of three originals on the cable and online platform.
Calling all college students! Cyn opsis Weekender College Edition sponsored by ABC Family is coming out on April 26, 2007, and if your essay is one of the four published, you’ll be paid $350! We’re looking for 350 word editorials from current college students all around the country and the world. The four most insightful, original, humorous and/or well-written pieces will be included in this special College Edition of Weekender . College Professors, moms and dads – encourage your students to participate! All entries should be emailed no later than midnight on Friday, April 20th to me at [email protected], SUBJECT: Weekender College Edition. Major League Baseball balked at the latest offer from cable MSO joint venture In Demand for rights to the out-of-market Extra Innings package of games. MLB reiterated its offer to In Demand to match the offer made by DirecTV, which included agreeing to carry a new MLB cable channel and paying $100 million for exclusive rights to Extra Innings per year. In Demand’s counter-proposal seemed to come up short in terms of the distribution it was offering the MLB channel, even though Comcast, Time Warner and Cox, the owners of In Demand, promised to match the 15 million subscribers DirecTV will deliver by carrying it on its basic tier.
Broadband television venture Joost signed Diversion Media as content partner. Diversion will launch two channels on the service next month. Travelistic features over 2,300 short-form travelogue videos from around the world including the original series The Map, hosted by Liza de Guia. Snowvision is a snowboarding channel full of tricks, tips and coverage of snowboarding events. Joost’s beta site is up and running at www.joost.com.
Amp’d Mobile raised another big round of funding, this time for $107 million, led by venture capitalists Old Lane Management.
Google is testing a new ad system that would allow advertisers to pay only when a click-through results in the actual purchase of a product or a potential customer signing up for a quote or a call back. Google’s current program is tied only to click-throughs, where advertisers pay each time their link is clicked on. The system has led many to question its efficacy and authenticity, with reports of click fraud widespread.
Monster.com introduced a new recruitment media advertising solution, including a suite of new online tools to help companies increase visibility of their online want ads. Job Spotlight lets employers highlight positions via ad placements, targeting active job seekers by category and locations. TargetMail sends out emails to targeted groups or career fair attendees.

Multiplatform online gaming is becoming big business. A report by Screen Digest claims revenue from online gaming totaled more than $1 billion in North America and Europe in 2006. About 87 percent is from subscriptions, with the balance coming from virtual item sales and in game advertising.
A new report by Gamemeasure suggests that gaming audiences are being vastly undercounted for the purpose of selling ads against specific titles. For instance, Madden NFL 2007, one of the industry’s best selling titles, sold 6 million units so far, yet 14 million people have actually played the game. After all, what fun is it delivering a virtual blow unless a friend is at the other controller to receive it? Advertisers need to factor in this “pass-along” when considering the space, according to Gamemeasure.
Fox Entertainment Group formed a new sales unit charged with developing integrated marketing opportunities, a clear goal of all the networks heading into Upfront season this year. The team will work with individual sales units at News Corp. to implement cross-platform, company-wide solutions. The Fox One team will be headed by:

Nielsen Business Media hired Linda McCutcheon as SVP/eMedia Strategy & Technology. Former president of Time Inc.’s New Media division, she will lead Nielsen Business Media’s line of digital products and services and report to Nielsen Business Media CEO Robert Krakoff in New York. Linda assumes a position formerly held by Toni Nevitt, who is leaving the company at the end of March.
Disney Online promoted Joe Delgrosso to VP/Advertising Sales, Eastern Region and Charlie Echeverry to Vice President, Advertising Sales, West and Midwest regions.
Motorola named Greg Brown President/COO. The announcement came as the company lowered its revenue outlook by more than $1 billion. Motorola also named board member Thomas J. Meredith as acting CFO. He replaces David Denonshire, who will retire.
Looking for some wholesome fun? Check out www.twopeasinyourpod.com. Described as a “veggie telenovela,” the site is the home for a wacky, soapy sitcom starring, you guessed it, a cast of people in vegetable costumes. The production values are actually pretty high, the costumes are great, and the cast really lets it all hang out. There’s actually a show within the show, (sort of Day For Night thing), as the show revolves around two pea pods who co-host a morning show called “Two Peas in a Pod,” which features real guests and scripted sketches. It is produced by AcuteTV, founded by Ann Marie Lindbloom, who also plays Lisa Schnitz in the podcast. Thanks for the recommendation, Ann Marie!
A new website will be featured here everyday for you to check out. Some are TV-centric, some creative, some just plain strange. Email me your suggestions at [email protected] and if I include the site you mention, your name, company and city will be credited. Only one mention per calendar week, to make it fair.
