ABC Family handed a full season order to scripted series Jane By Design starring Andie MacDowell and Erica Dasher.  The series was given eight additional episodes which will debut this summer in addition to the network’s upcoming new series Baby Daddy, Bunheads and Beverly Hills Nannies.

A fourth season of River Monsters opens on Animal Planet April 1 at 9p with a special two-hour episode.  The new season follows extreme angler Jeremy Wade as he travels to Florida, Texas, Missouri and Oklahoma in search of maneaters.   The series will air in its regular time slot of Sundays at 10p following the premiere.  River Monsters is produced by Icon Films for Animal Planet.

1960s pop band leader of The Monkees, Davy Jones died Wednesday in Indiantown, FL where he lived.  He was 66.  British-born Mr. Jones rose to fame as the leader of the Beatles-inspired quartet The Monkees which also included Peter Tork, Micky Dolenz and Mike Nesmith.  The Monkees began in 1965 and were the creation of Hollywood producers Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider.  The group had several hit songs and Mr. Jones sang lead on many including Daydream Believer which made it to #1 on the charts.  Overall, The Monkees’ songs sold an estimated 65 million copies worldwide.  The foursome also starred in a popular TV series that ran on NBC from 1966 to 1968 where they played members of a struggling rock band and got caught up in many adventures.  The series won a Primetime Emmy Award in 1967 for Outstanding Comedy Series.  Throughout this time, Mr. Jones with his engaging smile, mop hair and British accent, rose to heartthrob status in the US.  After exiting The Monkees in late 1970, Mr. Jones tried his hand at a solo singing career and made several appearances on TV series including a memorable guest starring role on The Brady Bunch.  In the mid-1980s, Mr. Jones reunited with Mr. Tork, Mr. Dolenz and promoter David Fishof for a reunion tour.  That tour led MTV to re-air The Monkees TV series, introducing the group to a whole new generation.  In the late 1990s, the group filmed a special called Hey, Hey, It’s The Monkees.  In more recent years, Mr. Jones continued to perform and had scheduled dates for March.  Mr. Jones is survived by his wife, Jessica Pacheco and four daughters from two previous marriages.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~

Starting today, Bounce TV will be available to Cox Cable subscribers in Washington, D.C. The network is seen over the air in Washington, D.C. on WUSA-TV owned by Gannett Broadcasting.  Bounce TV also launched last weekend in New York on WWOR-TV.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Filmmaker and TV producer R.J. Cutler (The War Room) inked a first-look television deal with Lionsgate to develop and produce scripted content for broadcast and cable.  This new deal expands Cutler’s present relationship with Lionsgate as an EP/director for the ABC pilot Nashville, a drama written by Callie Khouri and produced by Lionsgate and ABC Studios.  Cutler and Khouri are both serving as EPs along with Gaylord Entertainment based in Nashville.

Ashley Greene landed a co-starring role in ABC’s drama pilot Americana following her guest starring run on ABC’s Pan Am.  Greene will play Alice a new designer who joins famous fashion designer Robert Soulter’s (Anthony LaPaglia) business and whose arrival turns the company and his family topsy-turvy.

Making it official, Mira Sorvino will star in the Jerry Bruckheimer crime drama Trooper for CBS.  Sorvino will headline the pilot playing a practical mom who becomes a New York state trooper.  Warner Bros. Television is producing.

Currently seen on ABC’s Cougar Town, Josh Hopkins landed a role in NBC’s comedy pilot Lady Friends from Kari Lizer.  Hopkins will play Rob, the character Nichole’s adoring husband.  This project is in second position to Cougar Town for Hopkins.  If ABC renews Cougar Town for a fourth season, Hopkins would continue in his present role and if the NBC pilot were ordered to series, it would have to re-cast Hopkins’ role.

Nat Faxon, writer on the film The Descendants and recent Academy Award-winner for his adapted screenplay will star in the FOX comedy pilot Ned Fox is My Manny.  Faxon will play Kate’s (Abby Elliott) brother, Ned Fox.

Drama pilot The Selection for The CW has cast Sean Patrick Thomas to play Sylvan Santos, a close adviser to the current queen and an expert in royal manners, per THR.  The project is described as an epic romance set 300 years in the future where a poor young woman is chosen by lottery to participate in a competition to become the next queen of a war-torn nation.

Showtime tapped Beau Bridges and Margo Martindale for its drama pilot Masters of Sex.  Bridges will play University Chancellor Barton Scully, William Masters’ boss and Martindale will guest star as Miss Horchow, Masters’ uptight secretary.  Previously announced Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan were cast as the leads, the 1960’s human sexuality pioneers William Masters and Virginia Johnson who ignited the sexual revolution.  Sony Pictures Television is producing and production on the pilot begins in New York next week.

Actress Brett Butler (Grace Under Fire) joins Charlie Sheen in the upcoming FX comedy Anger Management.  Butler will play a bartender at Sheen’s character’s favorite bar.

Later this year, Lifetime will launch the new docu-series Bristol Palin: Life’s a Tripp offering viewers an inside look at Bristol Palin’s real life in Alaska as a single mom to her son, Tripp.  The network ordered 10 half-hour episodes.  Palin is the daughter of former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.  Bristol Palin: Life’s a Tripp is produced by Associated Television International.
