~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

In one fell swoop, CBS renewed 18 series for its 2012-2013 broadcast season.  The renewals include four comedies: How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory, 2 Broke Girls and Mike & Molly.  Also in the comedy category, CBS and Warner Bros. Television are in preliminary talks about future seasons of Two and a Half Men.  CBS’ renewed dramas consist of NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, Hawaii Five-O, Criminal Minds, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Person of Interest, The Mentalist, Blue Bloods and The Good Wife.  Returning reality series include: The Amazing Race, Undercover Boss and the previously renewed Survivor.  Newsmagazine shows 60 Minutes and 48 Hours Mystery will also rejoin the network’s schedule in the fall.

Following the death of three horses during filming, HBO has pulled its series LUCK.  The premium network released this statement yesterday:

“It is with heartbreak that executive producers David Milch and Michael Mann together with HBO have decided to cease all future production on the series LUCK. Safety is always of paramount concern. We maintained the highest safety standards throughout production, higher in fact than any protocols existing in horseracing anywhere with many fewer incidents than occur in racing or than befall horses normally in barns at night or pastures. While we maintained the highest safety standards possible, accidents unfortunately happen and it is impossible to guarantee they won’t in the future. Accordingly, we have reached this difficult decision. We are immensely proud of this series, the writing, the acting, the filmmaking, the celebration of the culture of horses, and everyone involved in its creation.”

The next family to have their own reality TV show is the Eastwoods.  E! is going inside the lives of Dina Eastwood, wife of film star Clint Eastwood and their daughters Francesca age 18 and Morgan age 15 in the series Mrs. Eastwood & Company.  The half-hour 10-episode series, from Bunim-Murray Productions, follows Dina, Francesca and Morgan as well as the six members of the all-male South African vocal group Overtone that is managed by Dina.  Mrs. Eastwood & Company premieres May 20 on E!.

TLC heads to the Little Italy area of the Bronx for its latest reality series, Mama’s Boys of the Bronx following five Italian-American guys who are 30-something, handsome, employed and still living with their mothers.  The eight-part series, from Red Line Films for TLC, opens April 19 at 10p.

An eighth season of Weeds with thirteen half-hour episodes launches July 1 at 10p on Showtime and season two of Episodes debuts directly after at 1030p.  Production on Weeds begins next month while the nine half-hour episodes of Episodes recently completed production in London and Los Angeles.

Two weekly original series featuring urban explorer Don Wildman are making comebacks on Tuesdays as the Travel Channel premieres season three of Mysteries at the Museum April 17 at 9p followed by the second season debut of Off Limits at 10p.   In Mysteries at the Museum, Wildman travels the US going into the vaults of our nation’s most distinguished museums uncovering treasures from the past.  Optomen Productions, Inc. produces the series for Travel Channel.  Wildman continues to journey across the US in Off Limits though this time discovers the secrets of American man-made objects such as bourbon barrels at a Kentucky factory or obtaining a peak at one of the largest floats ever built for the annual Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena.  Off Limits is produced by Authentic Entertainment, an Endemol Company for Travel Channel.

US Latino entertainment network Tr3s: MTV, Musica y Mas is adding its newly-acquired Mexican novela Bienvenida Realidad beginning next Monday at 10p.  The new young-adult novela centering on a cast of multigenerational high school seniors, teachers and parents will air on Tr3s Monday through Friday at 10p.

Early next month, Velocity ushers viewers into the world of high-end car collection with a new season of Chasing Classic Cars debuting April 3 at 10p with a special bonus episode immediately airing after at 1030p.  The series is hosted by well-known collector car archeologist, Wayne Carini as he finds, buys, restores and sells the most unique vehicles ever manufactured.  The series is produced for Velocity by Essex Television Group.

All next month, Documentary Channel (DOC) in partnership with Participant Media’s digital division TakePart celebrates our planet with EarthView, a month-long lineup of environmentally-focused documentary films each night in April.  Under the heading of EarthView, the films begin April 1 at 8p with the US television premiere of Ingredients: Who’s Your Farmer?  A sampling of other titles in April include Someplace with a Mountain on April 7 at 8p; Save the Farm on April 8 at 8p; Tapped on April 15 at 8p; Kudzu Vine on April 21 at 8p; Bag It on April 22 at 8p; and Water Wars on April 29 at 8p.  A full list of EarthView films can be found at DOC’s website at: documentarychannel.com/earthview.

Upfront 2012:  Hallmark Channel

Yesterday in New York, Crown Media Holdings, Inc. owner and operator of Crown Media Family Networks encompassing Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel revealed new programming strategies for both networks.

  • Original Series in Development: For the first time in its 10-year history, Hallmark Channel is in development on two original series slated to debut in 2013.  The two series are from authors whose books have in the past been adapted into popular original movies for Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel.  The movie pilots for these two series include:
  • Cedar Cove, adapted from original literary works by author Debbie Macomber about the small town of Cedar Cove offering a backdrop for big and small stories.  Dan Wigutow and Michael Scott are on board as EPs.
  • When Calls the Heart is a period drama based on the successful books by author Janette Oke.  The romantic adventure series relates the story of Elizabeth Thatcher, a beautiful wealthy East Coast young woman who wants to teach and leaves her comfort behind to start a new life in a frontier town where she meets a handsome lawman.  Brad Krevoy and Michael Landon, Jr. serve as EPs.

Original Daytime Series: Home & Family  Setting another precedent, Hallmark Channel will introduce its first new original daytime series launching in fourth quarter that will fit into the network’s Lifestyle block.  Home & Family will have 220 original two-hour shows airing over 44 weeks produced by Woody Fraser Productions.  The hosted series, set inside a 2800 square foot, fully-equipped house on the Universal Studios lot, will offer home ideas and improvements as well as home trends and products.  Hosts for the daytime talk show will be announced in the near future.   Steve Leon serves as EP.

One-hour Talk Show: Marie!  Hallmark Channel and entertainer Marie Osmond are teaming on a new lifestyle talk show airing weekday afternoons. Production on Marie! begins soon for a fourth quarter premiere.  Segments on the show will feature celebrities and non-celebrities alike chatting with Osmond about lifestyle tips and trends, current topics and breakthroughs that empower families.  Guests on the show could include famous celebrities to everyday people, to Osmond’s own family as well as leading experts in various fields.   Marie! is produced by ATI, Associated Television International.  David McKenzie, David Martin, Marie Osmond and Jim Romanovich are EPs.

Hallmark Channel Original Movies:  Staying with tradition, Hallmark Channel will serve up 28 Hallmark Channel Original Movies premiering fourth quarter 2012 through third quarter 2013.  Highlights of the movie titles include:

  • Love at the Thanksgiving Day Parade debuts November 4 at 8p

Acquired Series: Hallmark Channel picked up the first-run, off-net comedy series The Middle starring Patricia Heaton and will launch the first of 88 episodes starting in March 2014.  Additional seasons of The Middle will join the rotation as they become available.  The Middle, distributed by Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution, joins classic sitcoms Frasier and The Golden Girls on Hallmark Channel.

Upfront 2012:  Hallmark Movie Channel

Crown Media further said the production slate for Hallmark Movie Channel will increase in 2013 to nine Original Movies.  A few of the movie titles for Hallmark Movie Channel’s fourth quarter 2012 to third quarter 2013 roster include: Rites of Spring starring Shelley Long and Trevor Donovan; Goodnight for Justice 3: Queen of Hearts with Luke Perry as star and EP; Shadow on the Mesa starring Kevin Sorbo, Meredith Baxter, Gail O’Grady and Greg Evigan; and Home Sweet Home among others.

ZenithOptimedia injected a bit more optimism into their latest global ad expenditure forecast for 2012 in a new report.   The company predicts the global ad spending will increase in 2012 by +4.8%, up a tad from the +4.7% forecast they put out in December 2011.  Latin America and Asia Pacific will bolster the worldwide ad economy as Europe continues to weaken, according to ZenithOptimedia’s report.  To read the full report, please visit the Cynopsis website at www.cynopsis.com and look for the article link under Additional Industry News.
