Good morning. It’s Thursday, June 6, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Keith Olbermann is back, and will be behind the microphone when TBS launches its Major League Baseball postseason studio show this fall. Olbermann will host and join analyst Dennis Eckersley. With the talent tweaks, Cal Ripken, Jr. transitions from the studio to the broadcast booth full time this postseason where he will join Ernie Johnson(play-by-play) and Ron Darling as a three-man commentator team throughout the 2013 MLB Postseason, including the network’s coverage of the Division Series and exclusive telecast of the National League Championship Series. Meanwhile, the company announced a long-term extension with Darling, who will continue to serve as an analyst for a portion of the network’s “Sunday MLB on TBS” regular season game schedule.
Telemundo’s coverage of the Soccer World Cup Qualifier between Jamaica and Mexico on Tuesday night ranked as the top sporting event on TV that evening, according to Nielsen, drawing an average of 2,867,000 total viewers and 1,733,000 adults 18-49. The “Rumbo al Mundial” also scored as the top-ranked telecast among total viewers in Houston and Los Angeles regardless of language in the time period and ranked as the top program regardless of language among adults 18-49 in Los Angeles, Houston, Miami and Dallas.
Kentucky Derby winner Orb and Preakness Stakes winner Oxbow will battle one last time this weekend when NBC Sports Group presents the 145th running of the Belmont Stakes. Overall, the company will offer 6.5 hours of coverage beginning Friday at 4p on NBC Sports Network, and wrapping up with the Belmont Stakes on Saturday at 5p on NBC. Bob Costas and Tom Hammond co-host.
HBO Sports lined up six documentaries to run on consecutive Wednesday evenings this summer. The lineup of films will run on HBO and feature a blend of archival footage, home movies, revealing interviews and unique storytelling. It launches on June 26 with McEnroe/Borg: Fire & Ice at 6:30p and wraps up on July 31 with Michigan vs. Ohio State: The Rivalry. Other documentaries will include looks at the 1999 Women’s World Cup soccer team, the first fight between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, Curt Flood, and the rivalry between Duke and the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
With the Formula One Canadian Grand Prix set to hit NBC at 2p on Sunday, the company reports that its six live Formula One races this season on NBC Sports Network (five) and NBC (one) reached 4.746 million average viewers so far this season, marking a 137% jump over the same point last year, according to Nielsen data. NBC’s live broadcast of the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday, May 26, was watched by 1.413 million viewers, making it the most-watched F1 race on U.S. television in six years, up 231% vs. last year’s race.
ESPN revealed the matchups for this year’s Jimmy V Men’s and Women’s Basketball Classics, which will run on ESPN and ESPN2 on Tuesday, Dec. 17. The men’s doubleheader will tip off at 7p with Cincinnati facing Pittsburgh followed by Florida/Memphis at 9p on ESPN. Meanwhile, the women’s event will feature Connecticut/Duke at 7p on ESPN2.
NBC carries 1971 U.S. Open: Lee Trevino an American Champion on Sunday at 5p, showcasing the golfer’s victory over Jack Nicklaus that helped him turn a career corner and made him feel like he belonged with professional golfers. The hour-long retrospective is produced by Golf Channel in association with the United States Golf Association and will replay on Monday, June 17 at 10p on Golf Channel and throughout June.
USA Basketball is once again returning to Las Vegas this summer for a slate of basketball activities, highlighted by a men’s National Team mini-camp and the 2013 USA Basketball Showcase. A full roster of participating athletes will be announced later this month. The team opens its 2013 training with a July 22-25 mini-camp in Las Vegas that concludes with the 2013 USA Basketball Showcase, featuring a Blue-White intra-squad game, on July 25 at UNLV’s Thomas & Mack Center.

A new report from Octagon Access reports that with millennials representing the next hot target for marketers, research reveals that the generation with $200 billion in buying power “does not just want to be influenced anymore, they want to be inspired.” In addition, the study shows that basketball is becoming both a game millennials want to experience as well as part of an inspiring lifestyle they want to emulate. “The NBA has more avid millennial fans than any other major sports league and 16 percent of millennials watch NCAA basketball,” said Bobby Jones, Octagon Access Vice President. “While the quantitative connection is evident, the deeper connection is revealed through our Passion Drivers research — that quantifies why fans are fans — which shows millennials over-index in player affinity and player excitement, fan characteristics that can help sponsoring brands determine effective sponsorship activation tactics.”
The NFL is partnering with Anthony Munoz and the Munoz Agency for the second year in a row to how NFL Play 60 Character Camps this summer. The camps are part of the league’s Hispanic outreach initiative and will take place in Chicago, Cincinnati, Dallas, Houston, Indianapolis, Miami, Oakland, Pittsburgh, San Diego, San Francisco, Tampa Bay and Houston.
Apparel and sneaker brand AND1 is entering a partnership with Five Star Basketball for apparel and event promotion. Through the deal, AND1 will serve as the official supplier of all Five Star branded clothing, both on Fivestarbasketball.com and at their elite summer camps. All 2013 Five Star product will be designed & manufactured by And1 and will bear AND1 branding as well.
Digital & Production
NeuLion is set to become the exclusive providers of digital internet streaming services for live events at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The company’s multi-year deal will utilize Neulion’s technology and allow fans to buy a ‘digital ticket’ to watch a live event, excluding Nets games, on their PCs, smartphones and tablet devices. Digital ticket viewers can access the service through both PPV as well as subscription memberships, while free coverage will incorporate advertising.
