06/30/11
Good morning. It’s Thursday, June 30, 2011, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
GE is back for the Games. The International Olympic Committee has extended its long-running deal with GE through the 2020 Games. The deal will deliver an estimated $200 million to sponsor and be the exclusive provider of numerous products and services to the events. The IOC currently boasts 11 “top” sponsors through next summer’s Games in London, with nine of those, including GE locked in through at least 2016. These will include Coca-Cola, Dow, GE, Omega, P&G and Visa. New additions to the IOC roster of sponsors now include Dow Chemical and Proctor & Gamble.
Don’t look for an end to blackout rules just yet. The NFL has told the FCC that calls from the Sports Fan Coalition to waive the blackout rule during retrains impasses were unnecessary, stating that a waiver would, in fact, hurt consumers by favoring Pay-TV providers and “undermine the retransmission-consent regime and give cable and satellite operators excessive leverage in retransmission-consent negotiations.”
Utah may now be in the PAC, and BYU an independent, but state Attorney General Mark Shurtleff is continuing his quest to investigate the BCS as a potential monopoly. Shurtleff put a call out on Wednesday for legal firms who would be interested in participating in an anti-trust federal lawsuit. “There are serious anti-trust violations in the BCS system that are robbing taxpayers of hundreds of millions of dollars,” Shurtleff said in a statement. “Putting together the strongest legal team from around the country will give us the best chance at bringing equity back to college football.”
In a sports media dream pairing (at least for me), MLB Network will see Al Michaels joining Bob Costas in the broadcast booth on Friday, July 8 when the duo call the Mets/Giants game at 10p. The game marks the first time Michaels and Costas will call an MLB game together and will mark the first MLB game Michaels will call since 1995. Both sportscasters will also make special appearances on SNY’s broadcast and on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area’s broadcast of the game.
What’s Independence Day without some Dogs? For the eighth consecutive year, ESPN is set to air the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest from Coney Island, N.Y., on Monday at noon. Paul Page will be on hand to offer bite-by-bite commentary with Major League Eating’s Rich and George Shea for the one-hour show. The competition will also be available live via ESPN3.com and ESPN Mobile TV. In addition to the men’s contest, the first-ever Women’s Championship will be held live at 11:30a on ESPN3.com. Coverage highlights will include a Sport Science piece on Joey “Jaws” Chestnut, a heart monitor on eater Pat Bertoletti, and interactive viewer polling. The channel’s coverage of the contest has averaged a 1.1 rating over the past five years.
Fans longing for the return of the hockey season, will be able to get their fix on NHL Network, which will offer up dedicated coverage of the league’s free agency period tomorrow. The channel will showcase TSN’s Free Agent Frenzy show beginning at noon where it will track all the signings and rumors from around the sport. Hosted by James Duthie, the show features two panels comprised of TSN’s team of hockey experts as well as correspondents detailing reports on the day’s activities. In addition, TSN Hockey Insiders Bob McKenzie and Darren Dreger will join Gord Miller at the ‘Free Agent Signing Desk’ to bring viewers breaking news on NHL deals. The channel’s series NHL Live will later broadcast to both U.S. and Canadian audiences at 5:00p
Weekend Updates:
The Fox Saturday Baseball Game of the Week is focusing on the crosstown rivalry between the Mets and Yankees at 4p. Joe Buck, Tim McCarver and Ken Rosenthal will handle microphone duties, with the game being shown in 79% of the country. Kenny Albert and Eric Karros will call the White Sox/Cubs showdown, set for 10% of the nation, while the Indians/Reds game will feature Thom Brennaman and Mark Grace in the broadcast booth, also to be shown in 10% of the country.
CBS Sports Spectacular turns its attention to baseball on Saturday with MLB Midseason Report, with host Matt Winer joining David Wells,Cal Ripken Jr.and Dennis Eckersley at 2p, to breakdown the first half of the 2011 season as well as look ahead. On Sunday, the channel will present the 2011 TD Ameritrade Home Run Derby at 2p, featuring college baseball’s heavy hitters in an elimination faceoff. Play-by-play announcer Adam Zucker is set to be joined by former Major League Baseball All-Star Frank Thomas to call the action.
CBS will also feature the PGA Tour’s AT&T National on Saturday and Sunday with Jim Nantz anchoring coverage with Sir Nick Faldo on board as analyst.
In addition to Wimbledon this weekend, NBC Sports will offer up three hours of taped coverage of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships from Rome, Italy beginning at 3:30p on Saturday and continuing Sunday at 4:30p.
Sportsman Channel has announced that Optimum TV in Colorado, Montana, Wyoming and Utah has begun a phased-in rollout of Sportsman HD, with the network now available in the Family Package in those markets.
Sponsorship & Promotion
Barclays has inked a four-year extension to serve as title sponsor of The Barclays, the first tournament of the PGA Tour playoffs for the FedExCup. The agreement extends the company’s relationship with the tournament through 2016. This year’s golf event will take place from August 23-28 in Plainfield.
ESPN has unveiled the items up for auction for the 7th annual “Don’t Give Up ESPYs V Foundation Auction” set to be held from Sunday through July 13. Among the prizes up for grabs will be coverage, meaning that one fan’s local event will be streamed on ESPN3.com. Other items on the block in order to raise money and awareness for cancer research will be autographed items as well as special access ticket packages, trips to ESPN headquarters, and the opportunity to have your headshot placed on a stick for PTI. Last year’s ESPN Radio “Don’t Give Up ESPYs V Foundation Auction” raised $504,000 in net proceeds for The V Foundation for Cancer Research. The event has raised more than $4,100,000 in its six years.
Tiger Woods had landed himself a day job, signing a deal to promote a heat rub. The Japanese pain reliever, known as Vantelin Kowa, will feature commercials featuring the athlete beginning next month as part of a three-year deal that will include TV, print, and online ads in Japan.
Digital Fields
In honor of Social Media Day today, MLB is jumping into the action as fans wrap up voting for the All-Star Game. As fans cast their ballots, MLB.com as well as the sites for all 30 clubs, will celebrate via new digital initiatives designed to reward fans. Fans who “like” their favorite team’s official Facebook page will be eligible to enter into a special sweepstakes to win a customized jersey from the All-Star Game. In addition, one grand prize winner will receive four tickets to the 82nd All-Star Game on July 12 in Phoenix. Teams playing games on Social Media Day will also feature a specially designated All-Star Game-themed hashtag for fans to use in hashtag battles on Twitter.
NFL.com writer Vic Carucci is exiting the site, after accepting a position with the Cleveland Browns where he will host a new radio show on ESPN 850 WKNR in the city as well as contribute to team site ClevelandBrowns.com. Carucci will, however, continue to host his weekly show on SiriusXM Radio.
Wimbledon’s women’s semi-finals on ESPN2 followed by NBC, beginning at 7a.
ON THIS DAY in 1995 – The Cleveland Indians Eddie Murray became the 20th player to reach 3,000 hits

In My Opinion …
- Give it up Frank. Although I’m from the east coast, I’ve lived in LA long enough to have seen both the good and the bad from the Dodgers. Now, when even Mark Cuban, who tends to be linked by the press to every potential baseball sale, goes on record to say he isn’t sure he wants a piece of the team, it’s time to get out of Dodger Stadium. I’ve worked with some terrific people at the Dodgers over the years, and frankly, they deserve better than this mess. In my visits to the team this year, there have been three constants: No stars, no fans, and no fun. Drop the legalities and sell the team, it’s done.

Completely agree with you on your take about McCourt and this is coming from a lifelong Giants fan. As much as I hate the Dodgers it does pain me to see such a storied franchise mire in this mess. The frustrating part for Bum fans is that everyone knew it would be a mess once they took hold of the team and started spending like they won the lottery. I honestly miss having a relevant rival.
–Clint Rogers
I completely agree! The fact that one of MLB’s most celebrated franchises is a bargaining chip in something so sordid as a high profile divorce case is shameful. I think MLB’s and Commissioner Selig’s actions to date have been none too subtle hints to Mr. McCourt to sell the team and take his personal dirty laundry back behind closed doors where they belong. The best interests of the Dodger’s and their fans would best be served with an owner whose focus is on putting a winning team on the field. Mr. McCourt may think he has his team’s best interest at heart by wanting to hold on to the franchise, but this situation has tainted his reputation as an owner and tainted the storied traditions of Dodger Blue. Time to let someone else play Frank!
