A second season of Top Gear opens on HISTORY July 24 at 10p. HISTORY’s Top Gear is the US version patterned off the popular Top Gear UK edition that airs on BBC Two. For the US series, champion race car driver Tanner Foust, racing analyst Rutledge Wood and comedian Adam Ferrara host as they test different vehicles to see if they can be considered supercars. Top Gear is produced by BBC Worldwide Productions and is a co-production of HISTORY and BBC Worldwide.
In late August, MTV premieres two new series back-to-back for its Monday night schedule:
- Ridiculousness – Rob Dyrdek hosts this series in front of a studio audience featuring current and hilarious amateur viral videos that he slots into different categories such as “Redneck Good Times,” “Worst Case Scenario” to “What Happened Last Night” and more. The series opens August 29 at 10p.
- Death Valley – The network’s new horror-comedy is a scripted, documentary-style series following the “Undead Task Force (UTF)” a new division of the LAPD, where vampires, werewolves and zombies are discovered living freely in Death Valley. Series debuts August 29 at 1030p.
UK romantic comedy Free Agents, with six half-hour episodes, picked up by BBC America to air within the network’s Ministry of Laughs comedy block starting October 1 at 1130p. The sitcom is set inside a London talent agency about a brash, obsessive boss (Anthony Head) who is going through a divorce and wonders if he’ll ever date again. The series also stars Stephen Mangan and Sharon Horgan. Furthermore, NBC picked up the show and is creating a US version also helmed by Anthony Head who continues in the role as Stephen. The UK edition is produced by Big Talk and Bwark for Channel 4 and distributed by BBC Worldwide.
TV One and Essence continue their partnership for a third year where TV One is the official broadcast sponsor of the 2011 Essence Music Festival, the country’s largest annual gathering celebrating African-American music and culture. The deal allows TV One to produce TV One Night Only: Live from the Essence Music Festival, a two-hour music highlights show slated to air this September.
FremantleMedia Enterprises granted global distribution rights, excluding the US, to Web Therapy from Lisa Kudrow. Originally, Web Therapy was an online series centered on Fiona Wallace (Kudrow), a therapist with questionable experience and no patience as she offers counseling to patients in three-minute sessions by using a webcam. Showtime will premiere the revamped series July 19 with 10 half-hour episodes sporting fresh footage shot specifically for television.
Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) landed a role in Aaron Sorkin’s drama pilot, More As This Story Develops being readied for HBO. Patel will be a series regular playing a staffer working at the cable news channel. To date, the pilot stars Jeff Daniels as host of a cable news show in addition to Emily Mortimer, Alison Pill, Sam Waterston and Olivia Munn.
Joe Rogan returns as host for the resurrected reality/competition series Fear Factor on NBC. News of the series’ comeback broke recently with Endemol USA producing the new eight-episode run.
Miniseries World Without End, the sequel to Pillars of the Earth and based on the novel by Ken Follett, revealed its cast. The eight-hour medieval period drama is headlined by Cynthia Nixon, Miranda Richardson and Peter Firth along with Ben Chaplin, Charlotte Riley, Rupert Evans, Megan Follows, Nora von Waldstaetten, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Tom Weston-Jones and Sarah Gadon. Tandem Communications and Take 5 Productions are producing in co-production with Galafilm and in association with Ridley and Tony Scott’s Scott Free Films. Production will be done on location in Hungary, Slovakia and Austria with Howard Ellis’ Mid Atlantic Films.
USA Network tapped Jennifer Finnigan as the female lead starring opposite Ben Lawson for its pilot Wild Card set in Las Vegas. This casting move removes the contingency on the project. Finnigan will play Eliza Evans, a lawyer who solves people’s problems overnight. Lawson plays her partner, Will Garratt.
