6/28/07

Good Morning, it’s Thursday, June 28, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Just when you thought According to Jim was dead in the water not having appeared on the ABC fall schedule or the midseason list, ABC goes ahead and surprises you.  The network ordered up 18 new episodes of the sitcom which ABC plans to bring back to primetime as a midseason replacement series. Also at ABC, the pilot Football Wives may be getting picked up after all, as the cast has received extension on their options, says Hollywood Reporter. Produced by ABC Studios, this project was also left off the primetime schedule for next fall.

Tonight’s Premieres:
Bravo: Hey Paula at 10p
USA Network: Burn Notice at 10p

Tonight’s Finales:
USA: The Starter Wife (part 6 of 6) at 9p
NBC: Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip at 10p

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

ESPN/ABC, Turner and the NBA have enhanced their current global partnership that includes an eight-year extension beginning 2008-2009 through 2016. This deal marks the largest digital rights package between ESPN and a major professional sports league. The deal gives ESPN and Turner exclusive rights to distribute full-length NBA games and highlights across all media and territories via TV, HD, VOD, interactive TV, gaming platforms, radio, online, mobile, etc. – through 2016 and includes platforms not yet invented. ESPN’s package includes 76 regular season games and 29 playoff games on ESPN and ABC on any platform – live, delayed, on demand, via interactive TV, or simulcast on ESPN 360.com and ESPN Mobile TV. Turner gets the rights to telecast and stream 52 regular season games, The NBA All Star Game and Weekend and the other conference finals, as well as create interactive applications and fantasy-related content.

Turner has also been busy on another front.  The cable nets TNT and TBS have picked up the cable rights to the firm Rush Hour 3 from New Line, a full six weeks before the film premieres in theatres. According to Variety, the deal is pretty straight forward – a license fee of 12% of domestic box office not to exceed $200 million, or a max of $24 million.  In addition to Rush Hour 3, the deal also includes renewals on Rush Hour 1 and 2, and the cable rights to the film Fracture.  Both films will air first on pay cable – HBO.  Rush Hour 3 goes to Turner in 2010 and Fracture in 2009.

Lifetime has also been in movie shopping mode, and has picked up five titles – Because I Said So (Universal), Georgia Rule (Universal), Notes on a Scandal (Fox Searchlight), Waitress (Fox Searchlight) and the Warner Bros. film In the Land of Women.  As with the Turner deal, all five of these titles will go first to pay TV – HBO, before coming to Lifetime, reports Variety.

A&E Network returns two real-life cop series to its line-up July 12: season six of The First 48 opens at 9p and season three of the SWAT franchise resumes at 10p. The First 48 takes viewers behind crime scenes in Miami, Memphis, Dallas, Kansas City and Detroit and now in Cincinnati. SWAT follows men and women on the force in Dallas, Kansas City and Detroit as they lead crime investigations. Both series are produced by Granada America.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Vertigo Entertainment has signed a first-look TV pact with Lionsgate to develop and produce scripted programming for cable and broadcast. Vertigo Entertainment is best known as the production entity behind U.S. remakes of Asian films such as The Ring, The Grudge and The Departed. Both companies are currently working together on the film project The Eye, a thriller starring Jessica Alba.

A new multi-year content deal has been struck between Viacom’s Comedy Central and Canadian broadcaster CTV. The agreement covers broadcast and digital rights for the entire Comedy Central programming line-up to air across CTV’s multi-platform outlets including The Comedy Network. Now Canadian TV viewers will see more than 200 hours of current series including The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, South Park, The Colbert Report, The Sarah Silverman Program and more. The deal also includes the entire backlog of Comedy Central programs and covers rights to Comedy Central’s online and broadband, VOD and mobile products.

USA Network has ordered 11 additional episodes of the original series To Love or Die, from Broadway Video TV and Universal Media Studios.  The series stars Shiri Appleby and Tim Matheson, about a woman who tracks down her long lost father only to learn he’s a professional assassin.

Jason Dohring has joined the cast of the CBS fall primetime series Moonlight starring Alex O’Loughlin as a private investigator who also happens to be a vampire.
