~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

CNN/US ushers in a new weeknight primetime program this fall co-hosted by journalist Kathleen Parker and former New York governor Eliot Spitzer. The program, airing at 8p, is described as a lively, nightly roundtable talk show and the pair, along with guests and regular contributors will offer opinions and discussions on topical news stories and events of the day. As the progressive voice of the two, Spitzer has been called the “Sheriff of Wall Street” and was a renowned prosecutor and former Governor of New York. Parker is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who describes herself as a “rational” conservative and her current opinion column appears twice weekly in more than 400 newspapers nationwide.

The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences met Tuesday and discussed the possibility of moving up the Oscars telecast to January instead of February. The 83rd annual Academy Awards will stick with its scheduled air date of February 27, 2011 airing on ABC. If a January date is settled on it could happen as early as 2012. It has been suggested moving the Oscars telecast to January could help with the event’s television ratings. Since 2004, the Oscars has aired in February after many years being scheduled in late March/early April, though this year’s telecast aired on March 7 to avoid the Winter Olympics.

With June being Gay Pride Month, Sundance Channel has served up several offerings throughout the month under the multi-platform marketing campaign “Love, Love” honoring the LGBT community. The line-up this month has included many documentaries and films including the first season finale of Be Good Johnny Weir airing this Sunday at 9p preceded by a first season marathon that started Wednesday, with episodes airing up to the finale. Then on Monday, Sundance Channel will air the US television premiere of the documentary Edie & Thea: A Very Long Engagement at 8p. Additionally, Sundance Channel has been an official sponsor of 2010 NYC Pride and will use the NYC Pride’s 24th Annual Dance on the Pier this Sunday as a chance to promote the network’s new original series Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys debuting this fall.

This summer, MSG Plus teams with The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) to present championship thoroughbred racing with Saturdays at Saratoga beginning July 31 at 5p. The network will offer one-hour live telecasts from the historic Saratoga Race Course of ten graded stakes races including the Travers, Jim Dandy, Whitney, Betfair TVG Alabama and Woodward among others over six Saturdays through September 4. MSG Plus and NYRA co-produce the series.

Investigation Discovery is launching a new programming umbrella for independent documentary films called ID FILMS showcasing quarterly premieres. The first documentary film in the series is Cropsey making its world television debut on August 13 at 9p. The second film slated for this year is No Tomorrow on October 8, airing on ID under the title Final Judgment.

Sportsman Channel announced its third quarter programming schedule beginning next Monday which encompasses 850 original series episodes over 90 programs with 14 of them being new original series. The network’s parent company, Intermedia Outdoors (IMO) is serving up 65 new, original episodes over five titles during third quarter. Titles of the 14 new original shows debuting this third quarter include: Drake’s Migration Nation, Davidson’s Gallery of Guns, No Limit Outdoors, Brush Country Monsters, The Experience, Adventures South of the Border, BACK Outdoors, Gameface TV, Respect Outdoors, Real Down, Down the Road, The Industry, The Zone and Life at Table Mountain. Sportsman Channel will additionally bring back several other series in third quarter.

Tuesday’s premiere of original series Memphis Beat on TNT at 10p attracted 1.4 million A18-49; nearly 1.8 million A25-54; and 4.3 million total viewers. Leading into the new series premiere at 9p, TNT debuted the second season of HawthoRNe which tallied 1.4 million A18-49; 1.5 million A25-54; and 3.4 million total viewers.

Also on Tuesday, BET aired the season two finale of Tiny & Toya at 10p pulling in 1.7 million total viewers. The series is produced by DuBose Entertainment and BET Networks.

Discovery Channel’s Tuesday night episode of Deadliest Catch broke a record for the series by delivering 5.4 million total viewers. The episode documented the late Captain Phil Harris suffering a stroke while filming and being evacuated by a medical team. Tuesday’s episode was +17% higher than the series’ sixth season debut and the show has ranked #1 with cable ratings among A25-54 for eleven consecutive weeks.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

HBO is pitching basic cable networks to acquire its vampire drama True Blood, reports B&C. HBO has hosted meetings with networks though it has not officially sold the show nor set a premiere date. HBO just debuted season three of True Blood on June 13 with 5.1 million total viewers watching, representing a +40% bump over the second season launch.

Litton Entertainment’s Jack Hanna’s Into the Wild debuts September 20, and to date the nature and wildlife series has been sold in 96% of the US. Litton has made upgraded deals for the series in a number of markets including Houston, Phoenix, Raleigh Durham, Cincinnati and Jacksonville and some of the new stations acquiring the show include WABC/New York, WUSA/Washington, D.C., WSB/Atlanta and WSVN/Miami. Station groups picking up the show consist of ABC O&Os, Belo, Capitol, Cox, Fox O&Os, Gray, Lin, Meredith, Newport, Raycom, Roberts, Scripps, Sinclair, Sunbeam, Tribune, Weigel and Young.

London-based Virgin Media Television is offering a new channel to its line-up of LIVING networks as LIVING Loves launches July 5, showcasing both stripped dramas and comedies. LIVING Loves acquired the comedy Cougar Town as well as the dramas Grey’s Anatomy, Criminal Minds, Private Practice and Supernatural in addition to older series such as Charmed, Will & Grace and The X-Files. When the new channel launches on July 5, LIVING Loves will open in primetime with episodes of Will & Grace, Grey’s Anatomy and Medium. LIVING Loves replaces LIVING+2 and will air programming daily from 3p to 2a.

Echo Bridge Entertainment said the BBC’s teen brand BBC Switch picked up the free terrestrial broadcast licensing rights to the teen drama series Degrassi: The Next Generation. The series opened its eighth season in the UK and Eire this April on BBC 2 and will continue through to its season finale in September. Echo Bridge Entertainment is an independent worldwide distributor.

Correction: Tribune-owned KCPQ-KMYQ/Seattle picked up The Big Bang Theory in this market.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

When daytime soap As the World Turns completes its run on CBS, a new live daily talk show, Say It Now (wt) currently being developed by CBS Television Distribution may take its place, cites B&C. A pilot was shot in New York a month ago with actress Valerie Bertinelli, who has a development deal with CTD, and Australian talk show host Rove McManus. Say It Now is not a sure bet as a replacement for As the World Turns, as CTD’s pilot is one of many shows vying for the vacated spot including new versions of game shows Pyramid and Password and a show patterned off The View featuring Julie Chen, Leah Remini, Holly Robinson Peete and Sharon Osbourne.

Casting Call: Doron Ofir Casting is seeking smart, savvy and unique single women for a new documentary series, An Examined Life (wt). The show is looking for single women who are at least 21 years old and appear to be under 35 years. Women to be considered should be uniquely different and march to the beat of their own drum and live by their own rules. This could be women who love to shop at vintage thrift stores, to romantic dreamers, to ones who can fix computers. Interested women should apply online at www.examinedlifecasting.com.
