Immediately following its fourth season premiere Tuesday night, truTV granted a fifth season renewal to series Hardcore Pawn centered on one of the world’s largest pawn shops.  Back-to-back season four debut episodes on Tuesday delivered 1.9 million total viewers and 816,000 with A18-49 at 9p and 2.2 million total viewers and 1.0 million among A18-49 at 930p.  Hardcore Pawn is produced by Zodiak USA. 

Shorty Rossi star of Animal Planet’s Pit Boss series is back for a third run starting July 16 at 10p.  Shorty continues his mission of changing people’s perceptions about pit bulls and little people and additionally in the third season participates in the Make-A-Wish Foundation making a little girl’s dream come true.  Intuitive Entertainment produces Pit Boss for Animal Planet.

Season four of Giuliana & Bill, following celebrity power couple Giuliana and Bill Rancic, opens on The Style Network July 18 at 8p.  After documenting the couple’s trials of trying to get pregnant during season three, the celebrity couple will take a break from medical procedures during the new season and concentrate on living together in the same place for the first time.  Comcast Entertainment Studios, a unit of NBCUniversal produces the series.

Tuesday’s series premiere of Nail Files at 10p on TV Guide Network resulted in 252,000 total viewers, making it the highest-rated original series debut in the history of the network.  Counting subsequent airings of Nail Files on Tuesday, the network tallied a total of 1.1 million viewers for the night.   Nail Files is from SallyAnn Salsano’s 495 Productions, the company behind Jersey Shore.

A new study commissioned by the NAB points to the economic link between the local commercial broadcast industry and the US Gross Domestic Product (GDP).  Woods & Poole Economics, along with BIA/Kelsey, discovered $1.17 trillion of the US’ GDP, or 7% of the nation’s GDP, is generated by the local commercial broadcast radio and television sector which also contributes 2.52 million jobs each year.  The study examined local broadcasting’s economic impact on all 50 states as well as the District of Columbia.

Bilingual/bicultural network Tr3s: MTV, Musica y Mas, aiming at young US Latinos co-sponsored a new study called The Maximo Report revealing key findings about how the role of media, entertainment, digital media and marketing/advertising affects the growing demographic of young, bicultural Latinos. The report, conducted by Motivo Insights, LLC and the New Generation Latino Consortium (NGLC),  targeted 14-34 year old Latinos, both US and foreign-born who have lived in the US for 15 years or more.  A few nuggets from The Maximo Report shine a spotlight on the New Generation Latinos (NGLs):

  • When it comes to TV content, NGLs are language neutral though they like seeing themselves and their dual culture in the US portrayed on TV.
  • Today’s NGLs are merging facets of different cultures to spur the growth of the “Urban Latino” movement.  For example, NGLs are mixing traditional Latino values with hip-hop inspired urban culture to create a new urban Latino which represents a more dynamic and complex NGL consumer. 
  • NGLs reply on word-of-mouth to find new brands and products.  Because NGLs are extensive social media consumers, most learn about new products or brands via social media.

Storylines involving ad man Don Draper will continue on AMC’s Mad Men as Jon Hamm inked a three-year deal with Lionsgate Television to remain on the drama.  Hamm has been nominated for an Emmy three times for his portrayal as Don Draper and the fifth season of Mad Men launches in early 2012.

AMC cast Pruitt Taylor Vince in a recurring second season role on The Walking Dead.  Taylor will play Otis, a foreman at Hershel’s Farm where much of the sophomore season action takes place.

Production partnership details announced surrounding the international live talent show Q’viva! The Chosen starring Jennifer Lopez and her husband Marc Anthony along with show producer Jamie King.  Endemol, teaming with Simon Fuller’s company XIX Entertainment, will work with its network of operations in Latin America on the international production of the show, seeking talent in Latin music, artistry and dance with production taking place in cities and small towns in 21 countries.  Endemol will offer a local aspect of the show, differentiating each country’s version with a local host.  Furthermore, Endemol will distribute the show worldwide across all platforms outside the US.  Filmed in English, Spanish and Portuguese, Q’viva! The Chosen will launch simultaneously on broadcasters throughout North, Central and South America.  Other locally-produced formats will also be offered by Endemol in additional territories globally with talks happening currently in Europe.  The talent search has begun as people can nominate their country’s best singers, dancers and musicians via Facebook at and interested performers in the Americas can exclusively upload their video audition via YouTube at  Also this summer until the end of August, Jennifer and Mark will travel to remote villages and top cities seeking talent in multiple countries such as Argentina, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Panama and more.  Their three-month journey will be documented for the show.  Additional details about Q’viva! Fresh off his stint on Broadway, Jason Patric sealed a pact to star in the FX drama series pilot Powers, based on the comic and graphic novel series by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming.  In the crime procedural, Patric will play Christian Walker, a homicide detective who hones in on cases involving “powers” (people with superpowers).  Recently, Lucy Punch was cast as Deena Pilgrim, Walker’s partner; Charles S. Dutton as Walker’s boss, Captain Cross; and Bailee Madison as Calista, a barbed-tongued 10-year old drawn into Walker’s life.  Production begins next month in Chicago.  Powers is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and FX Productions with Charles H. Eglee as scriptwriter/executive producer; Michael Dinner as director/executive producer; and Bendis, Oeming and David Engel also serving as executive producers. 

HBO is developing a new drama series project inspired by Mike Tyson and his early life and boxing career.  Titled Da Brick, the project has Tyson involved along with filmmaker Spike Lee, John Ridley and Entourage creator Doug Ellin and his producing partner Jim Lefkowitz.  The plot will be set in Newark, NJ which is referred to as Brick City; Lee will direct with Ridley as writer and showrunner. 

American Idol judge and reality show producer, Randy Jackson contemplates a foray into daytime talk shows.  According to reports, Jackson is selling a talk show concept to potential buyers.  The show would apparently not involve the music industry but instead focus on hip trends of the future. 

French actress/model Roxane Mesquida joins The CW’s Gossip Girl next season in a recurring role as Blair Waldorf’s (Leighton Meester) future sister-in-law.  Based on reports, Mesquida’s character is not happy her brother Prince Louis (Hugo Becker) is marrying Blair.

Welsh-born BBC News anchor Huw Edwards presents the complete history of Wales in a new television series, The Story of Wales commissioned by BBC Cymru Wales from Green Bay Media.  The six-episode series will debut on BBC One Wales early next year with production commencing this summer.

Tuesday A18-49 Analysis:   Compared to the previous Tuesday, NBC was near pitch-perfect winning with a 4.1/12 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  NBC’s America’s Got Talent was #1 at 8p by delivering a 3.4/11 with FOX’s MasterChef simmering in second place at 1.8/6.  At 9p, NBC’s The Voice hit the right note with a 4.4/13 while ABC’s launch of new series 101 Ways to Leave a Game Show and Univision’s Triunfo del Amor tied for #2 at 1.9/5 apiece.  The second hour of NBC’s The Voice held the viewer’s attention through 10p at 4.5/12 and ABC’s series debut of Combat Hospital landed in second place with a 1.2/3.

Aaron D. Shapiro hired by Urbanspoon as Head/Global Audience Monetization.  In this newly-created role, Aaron will manage global advertising sales for and Urbanspoon Mobile via iPhone, iPad and Android.  Based in Los Angeles, Aaron reports to Mani Dhillon, GM.

Newly-established Merlin Media recognized the addition of John Gehron as Chairman/Advisory Board and Liz Aiello as VP/New York.  Merlin Media was formed to acquire and operate radio stations in partnership with private equity firm GTCR in Chicago and Emmis Communications, a diversified media company targeting radio broadcasting.  Merlin Media started with three stations with two being in Chicago and one in New York and in time, seeks to establish a network of radio stations across the US.  Forty-year radio veteran, John will spearhead creating strategic and strong relationships with business partners in Chicago.  Liz formerly was the SVP/Broadcast at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. 

Adspace Digital Mall Network employed Amy Jo Wayne as SVP/National Sales. Amy Jo joins from REELZCHANNEL and  The company also upped Amy Kauffer, Marc Galiano, John Wall, Steve Bruman and Kathy Hassett all to the position of VPs/National Sales.

Former Sony Pictures Entertainment executive Joseph Epstein appointed CMO at Digital Broadcasting Group.  Joseph will oversee marketing strategy and outreach activities for the company.

Beth Coleman advances to SVP/Ad Sales Research at MTV Networks Entertainment Group where she will lead the strategic thrust for the ad sales research department in addition to supporting all Entertainment Group ad sales efforts via multi-pronged research.  Beth will manage the Entertainment Group Ad Sales Research team which includes the networks Comedy Central, TV Land, Spike TV and CMT as well as their companion websites and digital assets. 

Cox Media Group’s (CMG) Revenue group adds Katie Reid as a Senior Director beginning July 11.  In her new position, Katie will work with Marc Morgan, Chief Revenue Officer and Paul Curran, VP/Revenue to develop and execute sales strategies, employee recruitment, and CMG conference planning among other duties.
