Cynopsis: Sports
06/16/11
Good morning. It’s Thursday, June 16, 2011, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Congratulations to Boston on taking the Stanley cup last night on NBC, which now sets its sights on the golf.
The NBC Sports Group revealed its plans to cover the 2011 US Open this week, with “Golf Channel on NBC” set to air 16 hours of coverage beginning tomorrow, while Golf Channel will is slated to run 50 hours of news surrounding the event from Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md. Meanwhile, NBCSports.com and GolfChannel.com will join forces to provide the most comprehensive digital coverage of the championship in their respective histories, including a simulcast of NBC’s weekday coverage. For the first time in its history, NBC will use the Actioncam, an overhead cable-suspended aerial camera system, to cover the tournament. Bob Coast will host all four rounds on NBC, while Dan Hicks and Johnny Miller anchor from the 18th-hole tower.
On the digital front, NBCSports.com and GolfChannel.com will fully integrate their two sites to produce one U.S. Open digital platform for golf fans that will share both on-air commentators and digital writers. The site will feature:
- Live HD simulcast of “Golf Channel on NBC” coverage Thursday and Friday from 3-5p, including the ability to pause, rewind and slow-mo any part of the coverage.
- Live HD coverage of Congressional’s “Featured Holes” (Nos. 10 & 18) on Saturday and Sunday.
- Live U.S. Open Wrapup Shows, presented by Lexus, after the conclusion of all four rounds of play. The talent will be from Golf Channel for the first time.
- Live mobile simulcast of all four rounds of “Golf Channel on NBC” coverage on VCAST and MobiTV.
A live Twitter feed of some of the top personalities and analysts in golf available as a companion to all the live-streaming video.
Universal Sports Network has inked a multi-year, multi-platform distribution agreement with DirecTV that will give the channel exposure and distribution on the world’s largest pay TV provider. The deal will include a free preview to all DIRECTV customers by early August, before moving to DirecTV’s Sports Pack and other packages on October 1, 2011. In addition, the channel’s content will be available to customers to view via the Internet, mobile devices and tablets when DirecTV rolls out its multiplatform offerings in the near future. Universal Sports subscribers will also have access to supplemental live Internet streams of events not aired on the linear network.
The newly-rebranded Fox Soccer is set to carry the United States’ 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinal match against Jamaica on Sunday, June 19, with pregame running at 2:30p and kickoff at 3p. JP Dellacamera and Kyle Martino will call the game in the broadcast booth with in-game sideline reporting from Brian Dunseth The U.S.-Jamaica winner will play the Panama-El Salvador winner in the semifinals on Wednesday, June 22 in Houston, Texas.
CBS Sports Network is feeling chatty, and will launch the “Tim Brando Show” on August. The show is already nationally syndicated on radio, which features Brando in a three-hour show covering the world of sports, and focusing on college athletics. CBS Sports Network will air weekdays from 10a to 1p. The show will originate in Shreveport, LA and also feature co-host Rogers Hampton.
Fox focuses on interleague play for this weekend’s MLB on Fox telecasts, with the Yankees at Cubs set to air in 74% of the country. Joe Buck, Tim McCarver and Ken Rosenthal will call the game. The rest of the nation will get the Rangers at Braves, with Kenny Albert and Eric Karros behind the mic.
The NFL Broadcast Boot Camp will, for the first time ever, reward a top performer with a gig. Executives at the camp will select one person to serve as a studio analyst for a 2011 NFL regular-season Sunday on Sky Sports in the United Kingdom. The Boot Camp is designed to give players an off-field afterlife by training them in the broadcast arts. Sky Sports serves as the premier NFL broadcaster in the U.K. and airs 1p and 4p games live every Sunday as well as all Thursday and Saturday night games and all postseason games including the Super Bowl. The Broadcast Boot Camp runs from June 20-23 at NFL Films in Mt. Laurel, NJ.
The Mid-American Conference has locked in some of its games for broadcast as well as kickoff times for the upcoming football season. Early winners in coverage plans, although more will be announced later, include Miami University, with nine games set to run on national or local platforms, as well as Temple, Northern Illinois and Toledo, all with eight.
Adrenaline channel FUEL TV is beefing up in martial arts and will debut a two-hour film series on Saturday at 11p entitled, Late Night Kung Fu. The series will focus on English-dubbed Kung Fu films, and feature former Top Chef Masters host Kelly Choi. The first movie of the series will be Executioners from Shaolin.
ESPN took home four 2011 National Edward R. Murrow Awards from RTNDA this year, winning for Investigative Reporting, Audio Feature Reporting, Audio Sports Reporting and Writing.
A new NCAA report looking at revenues and expenses from the 2009-10 fiscal year highlights a widening gap between schools with self-sufficient athletics programs and schools that rely on institutional subsidy to balance their athletics budgets. The report notes that generated revenues exceeded expended at 22 FBS universities, eight more than the previous year. The median net surplus at those 22 institutions was about $7.4 million (ranging from $211,000 to $41.9 million), but compared to loss at the remaining Football Bowl Subdivision schools of about $11.3 million shows a gap of about $19 million higher than the $15.6 million separation in 2009.
I’ve never really thought of watching certain golfers sing, but PGA Tour player Ben Crane just landed himself a sponsorship with Farmers Insurance for his band The Golf Boys. The group features Crane as well as fellow Tour players Rickie Fowler, Bubba Watson and Hunter Mahan and released their first music video “Oh Oh Oh,” presented by Farmers Insurance, Tuesday on Golf Channel. The PGA Tour is also featuring the video on PGATOUR.COM and promoting it through its presence on Facebook and Twitter. As part of Farmers’ support of “Oh Oh Oh,” Farmers will donate $1,000 for every 100,000 views of the “Golf Boys” video to both Farmers and Ben Crane charitable initiatives in support of Farmers’ sponsorship of the Farmers Insurance Open.
IMG College has reached an agreement with the Mid Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) for a five-year multimedia rights partnership that delivers IMG with all rights associated with advertising and sponsorship inventory including title sponsorship, temporary venue signage, game programs, event promotions, and hospitality at Mid Eastern Athletic Conference championship events. IMG College will also carry the exclusive sales rights for public address announcements, the Conference website, advertising opportunities within MEAC radio, and TV broadcasts.
IMG Worldwide locked in its own deal with motocross racer Ryan Dungey for exclusive worldwide management, sponsorship, licensing and marketing representation.
NFL attorneys are looking into the wrong kind of promotion, investigating a porn industry event that used several NFL players in their gear in its advertisements. The ads were for last month’s Exxxotica Expo 2011 in Miami and showed Chicago Bears player Major Wright, Houston Texans Kareem Jackson, Oakland Raiders Jacoby Ford and Kansas City Chiefs Brandon Flowers and Eric Berry in uniform as hosts of the event.
What’s the best kind of giveaway for a team? When it’s free, of course. Minor League Baseball team the Peoria Chiefs announced that they would provide a LeBron James 2011 NBA Championship Replica Ring Giveaway to all fans for tonight’s game to enhance the Salute to the 1990s Chicago Bulls Championship Teams Night. The replica ring matches LeBron’s in every way, because neither exist.

- In My Opinion …
- In spite of their newly-found paydays, recent scandals have only highlighted the growing flaws within the NCAA. The organization is in trouble, and it’s only going to get worse if doesn’t start making a stand and provide proactive leadership, even if the decisions aren’t popular. Passing the buck and blaming the BCS, USC, Pryor, Tressel, the state of Arizona, and so forth isn’t going to make these issues go away. Recently, coaches at some of the BCS schools have been vocalizing support to begin paying players, an idea that sounds terrific on paper, and is perhaps deserved. But when you look at school athletic budgets, you quickly realize that the only universities that are able to afford this are the BCS schools, leaving behind the vast majority of the country’s institutions. If NCAA executives don’t provide the leadership necessary to execute some sort of vision soon, maybe those columnists suggesting a BCS split is in the future will be on to something.

Chris!
I enjoy reading your opinions on the Cynopsis Sports emails I get… I’ve coached basketball at every level, high school thru the pros and I spend half my time as a sports choreographer/coordinator/consultant on movies, TV and commercials (one of the main reasons why I subscribe to you guys!)
Today’s topic about the NCAA really caught my attention because I agree with you 100%. The NCAA wants to show that they have a firm grip on these programs and try to flex their muscle… what went on at USC and Ohio State is not uncommon, they just happened to punish 2 programs that because of who they are can bounce back fairly quickly. If this happened to other schools such as Georgia State, UTEP or even a school like Hawaii, it would devastate them like no other… SMU had the death penalty in the 1980’s and they had a hard time recovering from that. As for paying players, I personally think that is what they should do but the NCAA would have to subsidize the whole program in order for every school to pay their players… you are right when you say that only the BCS schools can afford it and even then there are some schools that would not be able to stay afloat.
There is no sure way to get this NCAA thing straight, college athletics especially football and for some schools basketball is a BIG money maker, programs and conferences make millions and the rich keep getting richer… Everything is not on an equal playing field and it probably never will!
You have great stuff and always look forward to it…
