Soledad O’Brien, who left CNN as anchor of morning show Starting Point in March, is heading to HBO. O’Brien is set to join the network’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel. In addition, O’Brien has signed an overall content development deal with HBO. The pact lets the network have first look at scripted projects and long-form programming concepts developed by O’Brien’s production company, Starfish Media Group.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

ESPN is shutting down its 3D network, ESPN 3D, at the end of the 2013. The move had been rumored. The company has cited viewers limited interest in the enhanced service, which launched in June 2010.

FOX has completed its Upfront negotiations, according to a source close to the conversations. In fact, the net had finished its work a week ago – at the same time as CBS – but the powers-that-be were still dealing with smaller agencies so they didn’t feel they could say it was completely done. The CPM increase held at the 5-7% range, with 80% of the inventory sold, which has been typical for Fox. Dollar volume is down this year at about 10%, which is related to the ratings shortfall. Stay tuned for news from the other nets as it becomes available.

It’s official. Hilary Estey McLoughlin, President, Telepictures Productions, and Ken Werner, President, Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution, have announced the four-week test talk show The Real. Hosted by Tamar Braxton, Loni Love, Adrienne Bailon, Jeannie Mai and Tamera Mowry-Housley, the daily program will be available on select FOX-owned stations in New York, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Phoenix, Houston and Tampa, beginning July 15. The show is produced by Telepictures Productions and distributed by Warner Bros.

Disney Channel is wrapping Good Luck Charlie. The half-hour comedy will end, after it finishes production of its current fourth season. The show’s final episodes are slated to air through 2014.

It’s a milestone for Nurse Jackie. Showtime‘s favorite emergency room nurse hits her one-year anniversary of sobriety on the show’s fifth season finale. To find out if she has a drink to celebrate, tune in on Sunday, June 16 at 9p.

Beginning Sunday, July 21 at 9p, Style Media‘s docu-series City Girl Diaries follows five beautiful 30-something best friends as they navigate their fast-paced New York City lives. The show is produced by Discovery Studios LLC.

CMT‘s first animated comedy series, Bounty Hunters, premieres Saturday, July 13 at 10p.   Executive produced and voiced by Jeff Foxworthy, Larry the Cable Guy and Bill Engvall, the 13-episode series features America’s favorite funny guys tracking down fugitives, while trying to please the bonds woman who throws them cases, voiced by Lisa Lampanelli. The series is produced by Muse Entertainment in association with Parallel Entertainment, with animation services provided by Big Jump Productions.

Alfonso Ribeiro has been named host of ABC Family‘s new series Spell-Mageddon. The one-hour game show puts a fresh spin on the spelling bee, as contestants take on hilarious distractions while spelling increasingly challenging words. Production begins on Monday, June 17 in Studio City. The show is slated to debut on Wednesday, July 24 at 9p.

Save the date! The annual Cynopsis: Sports Business Summit is set to take place on Aug. 14 in NY, and will feature some of the biggest names driving sports today. In addition, the Women of Action cocktail event, which celebrates and examines the impact that women are having in the sports industry, takes place the night before the Summit on August 13.

~ FYI… ~

The Radio Television Digital News Association recognized ABC News with five Edward R. Murrow Awards, including best newscast for World News with Diane Sawyer: Tragedy at the Elementary School.  Sawyer anchored a special one-hour edition of World News from the Newtown United Methodist Church, where people gathered to pray for those impacted by the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting.

When the weather gets rough, the Weather Channel gets going — with umbrellas. During the pouring rain in New York City last Friday, the network dropped off about 400 umbrellas at a number of agencies around town, so folks wouldn’t get soaked heading home after being hunkered down in Upfront negotiations. Will it result in some dollars thrown in the direction of Weather Channel? Well, it couldn’t hurt….

~ PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT NEWS ~

Neal Moritz has inked a two-year overall deal with CBS Television Studios through his production company, Original Film. Moving from Sony Pictures Television, Moritz and Vivian Cannon will develop and executive produce new projects for the studio. The duo last served as executive producers on Showtime‘s The Big C, which recently aired its last episode.

Starz is developing a post civil-war drama series from award winning writer director and producer Rod Lurie (The Contender, The Last Castle) in conjunction with Plan B Entertainment. Set in Texas in 1867 during the Comanche Wars, Monsters of God follows two powerful ex-cavalry men as they struggle to maintain order over the men in their command. The series is being produced by Starz and Plan B Entertainment.

Attention all sci-fi fans. BBC America and BBC Two have announced the new co-production My God, It’s Full of Stars: A Journey to the Edge of Science Fiction (wt). The four-part docu-series will take an in-depth look at the cult of science fiction.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE AND CLEARANCE ~

Monica, Chandler, Joey, Phoebe, Ross and Rachel are headed to TV Land. Friends will launch on the network with nightly marathons from 7pm to 6a on Friday, June 14 to Tuesday, June 18. The show settles into its regular Wednesday night spot at 9p beginning June 19.

~ RETURNING SERIES ~

IFC has renewed its hit original comedy Portlandia for two more seasons. The series’ fourth and fifth seasons will each feature 10 half-hour episodes, to premiere in early 2014 and early 2015, respectively. The series is produced by Broadway Video.

~ SYNDICATION NEWS ~

NBCUniversal Domestic TV Distribution has sold daytime show Steve Harvey through 2016 to station groups across the country, including the NBC Owned Television Stations, Hearst, Cox, Media General, FOX, Sinclair, Gannett, Local TV, Allbritton, LIN, Nexstar, Raycom and more. “Steve is one of the best entertainers in the country and his first season has been a tremendous success because of the personal connection he makes with the daytime audience,” said Ted Harbert, Chairman, NBC Broadcasting. “It’s so great to see Steve’s very funny and substantive show being rewarded with long-term commitments from our station partners.” The series is produced by Endemol USA.

~ CASTING NEWS ~

Josh Randall (Ed) and Jordan Wall (The Glades) join the list of guest stars set to appear on the fifth season of Lifetime‘s Drop Dead Diva. Look for the two actors in the sixth episode. Randall will play Stuart Kane, a world-renowned chemistry professor. Wall will portray his protege, Brad Pines.

Justin Bruening will be back as Chef Jeff on the ABC Family drama Switched at Birth, according to The Hollywood Reporter. His character is slated to appear on episode 18, airing July 29. CSI alum Larry Sullivan has also been tapped for a guest spot on episode 17, airing July 22. He’ll play Leo, someone who may have adopted Angelo’s baby.
