2010 UPFRONT UPDATE: ABC completed its upfront sales as of yesterday becoming the fourth major English-language network to wrap this annual sales process. Only NBC is left and it is expected to finish its upfront this week as well. ABC is reported to have pulled in a sales volume for programming across all dayparts (including daytime, late-night as well as primetime) equaling around $2.4 billion, excluding sports sales that air on ABC in primetime which is sold by ESPN. ABC’s pricing increases relate to a +8% to +9% bump with 75% to 80% of its inventory sold across all dayparts. To date, CBS reportedly secured a rate increase of +9% to +10%; FOX at +8% to +9%; and The CW at approximately +7.5%.

The Style Network signed on for more Giuliana & Bill, giving the reality series featuring the real-life marriage of celebrity couple Giuliana and Bill Rancic a third season. During season three, Giuliana and Bill while living 2,000 miles apart because of their professional jobs, take on new challenges and decisions involving their fertility problems and where to establish a permanent home. The second season of Giuliana & Bill averaged 329,000 total viewers, a +15% gain over season one, and the season two finale airing on March 14 became the network’s most-watched telecast ever among W18-49 at 304,000. Comcast Entertainment Studios produces the series.

CNBC money and personal finance guru Suze Orman was taken to a Chicago hospital Sunday night where she had an emergency appendectomy. Orman, originally from Chicago, was visiting that city for her 59th birthday when the appendicitis attack occurred and is now home in Florida recuperating. CNBC has not stated when she will return to her show.

Fox Business Network (FBN) is replacing its 8p show hosted by syndicated radio host Dave Ramsey and will insert a new show hosted by Eric Bolling, a former Wall Street trader, titled Money Rocks with Eric Bolling. The new show will premiere June 21 offering an irreverent approach to topics involving business, politics, sports and celebrities. Previously, Bolling was a panelist on CNBC’s Fast Money before he started with FBN in 2008. Ramsey will likely continue making appearances on FBN through his contract expiration date later this year. FBN additionally has a another new show on the docket beginning this Saturday at 10p hosted by former New Jersey Superior Court judge Andrew Napolitano called Freedom Watch.

Starting next Monday, MTV debuts a new comedy block featuring the recently-premiered new series The Hard Times of RJ Berger at 10p followed at 1030p by the series premiere of new comedy Warren The Ape, a parody of the life of a D-grade celebrity puppet.

Also debuting on Monday, cable network Retirement Living TV (RLTV) launches It’s Your Call with Lynn Doyle, a quick-paced interactive talk show focused on topics relevant to the network’s 55+ audience. Premiering at 9p, It’s Your Call with Lynn Doyle features host and producer, Doyle who tackles issues found in today’s national headlines and provides a forum for people to voice their concerns and opinions. The show, which also airs on The Comcast Network, will highlight the topic of late-life divorce on “The Gores’ Split” during Monday’s premiere episode.

This summer, Golf Channel returns its series Golf In America for a sophomore season filled with more inspirational stories from ordinary people and celebrities who all love and are motivated by the game. Anthony Anderson continues as host for the 10-episode series premiering June 22 at 9p. Each episode will showcase three personal stories.

HBO brings back a second season of its comedy series Hung with ten new episodes opening June 27 at 10p followed by the season premiere of Entourage. Subsequent episodes of Hung will continue to air on Sundays at 10p.

Just prior to Game 6 of the 2010 Stanley Cup Final, the combined viewership on NBC and Versus has resulted in the most-watched five-game average in eight years. Overall through five Stanley Cup Final games, NBC and Versus averaged 4.6 million total viewers each game, representing a +10% over last year and the most since ABC and ESPN averaged 5.1 million viewers for the first five games in 2002. Additionally, the first five games of the Stanley Cup Final on Canada’s CBC is averaging 2.935 million viewers, a +64% hike over the previous year.

Last Sunday’s new series launch of Expedition Great White on National Geographic Channel at 9p ranks as the second highest-rated series premiere in the network’s history. The opening episode averaged a 0.73 rating among A25-54 and delivered 2.3 million total viewers. The series airs on Sundays nights at 10p.

ABC Family’s new series premiere of Pretty Little Liars Tuesday at 8p became the network’s best series debut ever among A18-34 with 837,000; W18-34 with 657,000; P12-34 with 1.7 million; and Females 12-34 at 1.5 million. Additionally, Pretty Little Liars is now ABC Family’s second most-watched series premiere among A18-49 with 1.1 million viewers and W18-49 with 854,000. The series debut also tallied 2.5 million total viewers.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

AMC and Fox International Channels (FIC) are teaming on AMC’s first wholly-owned originally produced series The Walking Dead, based on the popular comic book franchise by Robert Kirkman. The agreement allows FIC to have all international television and home video rights to the series as well as a first-run window for all FIC outlets in addition to full distribution rights for the entire span of the series outside of the US and Canada. The six-episode, one-hour series premieres on AMC this October followed by an international roll out across FIC.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

 
USA Network handed a cast-contingent order to the pilot Common Law (wt) from CBS Television Studios and Junction Entertainment. The comedic plot centers on two cops, Wes Mitchell and Travis Marks who are partners with the LAPD though they can’t stand each other. Their captain sends them to couples therapy to try to revive their successful professional partnership. The project is executive produced and written by Cormac and Marianne Wibberley (National Treasure, National Treasure: Book of Secrets) and Jon Turteltaub (Jericho, National Treasure) will also executive produce. Dan Shotz and Karim Zreik of Junction Entertainment will be co-executive producers.

Idris Elba, also mentioned this week as the star of the upcoming new BBC series Luther, will additionally appear as a guest star in four episodes of Showtime’s new original comedy series The Big C premiering August 16 at 1030p. In The Big C, starring Laura Linney as Cathy, a teacher, wife and mom dealing with cancer, Elba will play a painter named Lenny who forms a relationship with Cathy. With 13 half-hour episodes, The Big C is currently in production in Stamford, CT.

ABC’s Dr. Tim Johnson, appearing as the network’s medical authority for the last 26 years, will transition from a full-time role on ABC to become a contributor for ABC News. Johnson will continue to be a resource for ABC News on health care reform and other public health matters and will be available via all platforms when needed for debriefs. Johnson will still do the Medical Minutes for News One and various projects for the Health Page and On Call segments at ABCNews.com.

Tuesday  A18-49 Analysis:  ABC hit the high mark with A18-49 ratings Tuesday night at 4.4/13, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. FOX was on fire during 8p as Hell’s Kitchen was #1 with 3.2/10 followed by NBC’s encore of America’s Got Talent at 2.0/6. ABC owned the rest of the night as the NBA Finals Game 3 scored at 9p with 5.5/16 while the first season finale of Glee on FOX was next at 4.7/12. ABC’s ratings jumped to a 6.4/18 for more NBA Finals through 10p and NBC’s new reality series Losing It with Jillian was #2 at 2.1/6.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Jason Klarman was elevated, effective immediately, to the position of President, Oxygen Media. In his new role, Jason will add the supervision of Oxygen’s original programming and development teams to his current roster of duties. Jason has held the position of GM for Oxygen Media since November 2007. He will continue to report to Lauren Zalaznick, President, NBC Universal Women & Lifestyle Entertainment Networks.

Katz Marketing Solutions (KMS), the national marketing unit of Katz Media Group, upped three executives in New York City:

  • Brian McElroy is now SVP/Director of Research where he will continue to offer advertisers and agencies quantifiable research based on the effectiveness of their radio campaigns.
  • Stephanie Interbartolo was bumped to VP for KMS to offer digital insight and to head creative business development for the unit.
  • Liz Stillman was promoted to VP and in her new capacity will lend her expert knowledge of radio’s effectiveness to develop programs for KMS agencies.

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation tapped Norma Provencio Pichardo as Executive Director. The Foundation is the charitable branch of the Television Academy and its many programs include the College Television Awards, the Student Internship Program, the Fred Rogers Memorial Scholarship and the Archive of American Television among other fundraising events. Norma, who has more than 15 years of experience with leading non-profit organizations, fundraising and supervising education programs in the entertainment industry, will report to Jerry Petry, Chairman and Alan Perris, COO, both of the Television Academy Foundation.
