Good morning. It’s Thursday, July 29, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Fox takes the win on Tuesday night thanks in large part to its newest reality series Trading Spouses.  For the night Fox pulled a 3.5/10 among A18-49 according to Nielsen Media Research, a share point ahead of CBS 3.3/0, and two points ahead of NBC’s 2.9/8. Trading Spouses at 8pm earned a 4.5/14, a 30% increase from last week’s premiere, and doubling its closest competitor, NBC’s Last Comic Standing [r] (2.3/7).  ABC threw a repeat of Extreme Makeover Home Edition [r] at 8pm and delivered a 2.1/6. CBS’s Navy NCIS did the same. At 9pm things got a little more competitive with CBS’ Big Brother on top with a 3.6/10, though in a share tie with NBC’s 3.5/10 for Last Comic Standing (original ep). At 10p it was CBS all on its own with Amazing Race 4.2/12, four share points ahead of NBC’s Law & Order SVU [r] with a 3.1/8.

While Broadcast Networks took the night off from politics on Tuesday, Cable news outlets were not.  For the evening CNN averaged 2.36 million viewers, Fox News 2.34 million and MSNBC 1.4 million, all up from Monday night.

Mike Darnell, head of reality programming for Fox, sees his newest show as a combination of all the makeover shows you’ve ever seen, according to VarietyFamily Time (wt) will focus on a single family and makeover their entire lives – from their home to their car, to their pets and themselves.  And we’re not just talking hair and clothes — with Dr. Phil’s son as the host, these folks will learn from Jay McGraw ways to improve their interpersonal skills, how to deal with specific problems like bullies at school, or their weight.  The entire process, from roof to basement, bumper to bumper, nose to tail, and heart and soul, will take place over the course of just two weeks.  If you watched the first installment of Fox’s Trading Spouses, then you’re familiar with the family who will be the focus of the first Family Time, The Biggins.  In Trading Spouses, the Biggins rec’d $50k earmarked for paying off bills and as a down payment on a new home.  I guess their getting their new home now, and just saved themselves a bunch of money.

Premiering Tonight: Blue Collar TV on the WB Network at 8pm

Lance Armstrong wins his record setting sixth Tour de France victor, and Outdoor Life Network wins its highest ratings in its history.  Among M18-49, the network averaged a 1.48 for its full coverage, an increase of 36% over last year; and in total viewers pulled in 1.47 million, up 25% vs. last year.  Its single highest rated day was July 25 where the coverage drew in an average of 1.37 million viewers.  OLN also announced it has surpassed the 60 million mark in household distribution.

TNT‘s coverage of the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Race on July 25 earned it a 4.3 US national household rating with 4.7 million HHs.  That gives TNT its highest rated Cup race in its NASCAR history, and an increase of 13% over last year.

Elsewhere at TNT, in its second outing, The Grid drew 3.2 million viewers on Monday, July 26, though down from its premiere of 4.0 million, still a very strong showing.  Among A18-49, The Grid averaged 1.4 million viewers.

Banyan Productions has named Andrew Scher as Series Executive Producer for their new series Design Invasion, the new home makeover program which is produced in association with Twentieth Television and is set to debut on Fox O&Os in September.  The announcement was made today by Banyan Productions Chairman Susan Cohen-Dickler. In each half-hour episode of ?Design Invasion,? the program?s six interior designers will travel individually around the US and approach ?design challenged? homeowners with a complete makeover of a select room in their house.  Once the homeowner has agreed to the makeover, they will be allowed to keep one item while everything else is removed and the 12-hour maximum redo of ?Design Invasion? starts.

Roger Henry has been named VP/Programming for Discovery Networks’ Science Channel.  The announcement was made by Steve Burns, SVP/GM of the network, to whom Roger will report.  In his new position, Roger will design and execute the net’s programming strategy and oversee the channels’ financial strategies for programming and production.

American Public Television announced three uppings in its Business Development division – Judy Barlow up to VP/Business Development; Tom Davison to Director/Business Development; and Amy Farrell Matheson to Account Exec/APT’s International Sales Division, APT Worldwide.   Judy will oversee APT Worldwide as well as the int’l program sales division, the domestic distribution service APT Presentations and new business ventures. Tom’s focus will be on APT Presentations, new business ventures and int’l sales.
