In anticipation of Friday’s Opening Ceremony of the Summer Olympics in London, NBC Universal revealed its advertising take for the Olympics totals $1 billion.  This figure represents an increase of about $150 million more than NBC’s total for the 2008 Beijing Games.  NBC opens the Summer Olympics Friday at 730p. 

FOX has plans to premiere The Short-com Comedy Hour in summer 2013, a hybrid show combining elements of a multi-camera comedy and an alternative development platform.  The show will sport four short-form sitcoms or short-coms in an hour-long program.  Each short-com will highlight well-known actors as well as newcomers and comedians in one-act scenes.  FOX further will commission some of these scripted vignettes to series.  More details will be announced later.

Known from his appearances on HISTORY’s series Pawn Stars, Danny “The Count” Koker stars in a series of his own, Counting Cars, launching with a sneak preview on HISTORY August 13 at 1030p.  Counting Cars moves to its regular day and time of Tuesday’s at 10p as of August 14.  The half-hour series follows Koker as he acquires, restores and customizes classic cars and motorcycles.  Counting Cars is produced by HISTORY by Leftfield Pictures.

Also on August 14, Syfy bows its newest reality series, Collection Intervention with the first of six one-hour episodes at 10p.  The series features the former Head of Special Collections at Christie’s, Elyse Luray who assists couples, families and individuals with their pop-culture memorabilia collections that have spawned unhealthy obsessions and financial turbulence in their lives.  The opening episode visits a couple in Concord, CA whose Star Wars collection has taken over their entire home.  Collection Intervention is produced by High Noon Entertainment.

The producers and creators of Discovery Network’s Deadliest Catch, Thom Beers’ Original Productions are behind a new five-part series, Bering Sea Gold: Under the Ice, premiering August 24 at 9p on Discovery Channel.  The series is set in Nome, Alaska where gold miners search for treasure underneath four feet of solid ice on the Bering Sea floor.  The series is produced by Original Productions, a FremantleMedia company for Discovery Channel.

This Saturday, the new reality series Lights Out, produced by multi-faceted marketing agency CSE will debut on The Weather Channel with back-to-back episodes at 9p and 930p.  Lights Out follows power crews in Arkansas who are first on the scene and responsible for restoring power during sometimes severe weather conditions.  Lights Out is part of The Weather Channel’s docu-series anthology titled Braving the Elements.  CSE is also behind The Weather Channel’s series Weathering Disaster. 

Style Media handed Big Rich Texas a third season renewal and has expanded the franchise to include Big Rich Georgia which will premiere in first quarter 2013.  Style also is queuing up a new series from producers Magical Elves called Betsey + Lulu, featuring fashion designer Betsey Johnson and her daughter, Lulu which begins filming next month and will premiere in first quarter 2013.  Big Rich Texas is back on Style’s lineup October 7 at 8p.  In addition, Style will air new episodes of Giuliana & Bill on October 2 at 8p and the second half of season two of Tia & Tamera is back starting October 22 at 8p.

For the first time, the 9th Annual Style Awards will be broadcast in primetime exclusively on Style September 13 at 8p.  Penske Media Corp., Style Media and IMG Fashion are partnering to present the awards event from Lincoln Center during the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week on September 5.

At its TCA summer press tour yesterday, Oxygen Media revealed the premiere dates for two of its reality series: My Shopping Addiction set for September 25 at 10p and Hollywood Unzipped: Stylist Wars on November 27 at 10p.  In addition, Oxygen attracted 819,000 total viewers and 486,000 A18-49 viewers for its premiere of new series I’m Having Their Baby on July 23.

Once TV Mexico, owned and operated by Instituto Politecnico Nacional is premiering a new weekly culinary show highlighting Mexican cuisine when Diary of a Cook launches August 8 at 11p via Once TV Mexico’s International Signal.  The eight-episode series stars Mexican Chef Enrique Olvera as he reveals the influences behind Mexico’s foods with help from filmmaker Juan Carlos Rulfo. 

Bravo serves up a supersized 75-minute episode for the second season debut of The Real Housewives of Miami on September 13 at 10p.  Three returning housewives, Lea Black, Adriana de Moura and Marysol Patton will be joined by socialite Lisa Hochstein, supermodel Joanna Krupa, lawyer/chef Ana Quincoces and celebrity dentist Karent Sierra.  Alexia Echevarria will also recur during the season.  The Real Housewives of Miami is produced by Purveyors of Pop.

Scripted comedy Awkward was granted an extended third season renewal of 20 episodes from MTV.  In its second season, Awkward has tallied 1.8 million total viewers, a +6% increase over its first season. 

Jack Link’s Major League Fishing will have its Championship Round for the Summit Cup air on NBC next February 9 at 1p.  The Championship Round will repeat on Outdoor Channel the following week.  Leading up to the championship of the Summit Cup, the first five rounds will air exclusively on Outdoor Channel starting January 1 at 1p. 

Programming note: This Saturday, TV Land will honor the life and work of actor Sherman Hemsley who died Tuesday at the age of 74.  TV Land will air a four-hour block of The Jeffersons’ episodes beginning at 12p.  Hemsley played George Jefferson on the classic TV sitcom from Normal Lear. 

Television and film actor Chad Everett, best known for his portrayal of Dr. Joe Gannon on the 1970s CBS drama Medical Center died Tuesday at home in Los Angeles.  He was 75.  Mr. Everett starred in 170 episodes of Medical Center that aired from 1969-1976 and he also guest starred in such shows as The Love Boat, Murder, She Wrote, Melrose Place among many others.  More recently, Mr. Everett appeared on Cold Case, Supernatural and Castle.  Mr. Everett’s film credits include Mulholland Dr., The Jigsaw Murders and a 1998 remake of Psycho from Gus Van Sant.  Mr. Everett was married for 45 years to the late actress Shelby Grant who passed in 2011.  He is survived by two daughters, Katherine and Shannon and six grandchildren.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~

Style Media acquired the off-network rights to The CW series Gossip Girl from Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution.  Style will air Gossip Girl from the beginning on Wednesday nights in a block at 8-11p starting August 15.  Style will also air a Labor Day marathon of Gossip Girl episodes on September 3.  Gossip Girl is heading into its sixth and final season on The CW.  The series is based on the book by Cecily Von Ziegesar and is produced by Fake Empire and Alloy Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios.

Trifecta Entertainment & Media is set to launch the off-net series Leverage in syndication beginning September 15.   Leverage has been cleared in 95% of the US on CBS owned stations including WCBS/New York, KCBS-KCAL/Los Angeles, WBBM/Chicago, KTVT-KTXA/Dallas, KPIX-KBCW/San Francisco, WBZ-WSBK/Boston, WUPA/Atlanta, WWJ-WKBD/Detroit, KSTW/Seattle, WCCO/Minneapolis, WBFS-WFOR/Miami, KTVD-KUSA/Denver and KDKA-WPCW/Pittsburgh.  Other station groups that have picked up Leverage in multiple markets are Tribune, Local LLC, Sinclair, Newport, Lin, Meredith, Raycom, Gray, Weigel, Barrington, Journal, Roberts and Titan.  Leverage, produced by Electric Entertainment, currently airs on TNT.  

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Former Tudors star Jonathan Rhys Meyers will headline a new 10-episode drama, Dracula approved by NBC.  Dracula is a co-production between Universal Television UK network Sky Living, Flame Ventures, Playground Entertainment and Carnival Films & Television, the company behind Downton Abbey all under NBCUniversal International TV Production.  NBC ordered a script of Dracula this month.  EPs on the project include Playground’s Colin Callender, Flame’s Tony Krantz, Carnival’s Gareth Neame and Sky’s Anne Mensah.  Co-EPs are Reece Pearson and Cole Haddon, who penned the script.

Matthew Perry’s new comedy for NBC titled Go On has added Christine Woods (Perfect Couples).  Woods will play Ryan’s (Perry) late wife who will appear in flashbacks and dream sequences. 

Penelope Ann Miller (Men of a Certain Age) was tapped for a recurring role on ABC’s upcoming primetime soap Mistresses.  Miller’s character is a woman who was not aware that Yunjin Kim’s character was romantically involved with her late husband.  Alyssa Milano, Rochelle Aytes and newcomer Jes Macallan star along with Kim.  Mistresses is scheduled to premiere in summer 2013. 

British actress Polly Walker is joining CBS’ The Mentalist for its fifth season in a major recurring role as Senior FBI agent Alexa Shultz, a beautiful and competent agent, reports TVLine.   The Mentalist premieres on September 30. 

CBS cast Chris Smith in the lead role on its new comedy pilot Ex-Men from EP Rob Greenberg (How I Met Your Mother). 

Kat Foster is joining the cast of FOX’s midseason comedy Goodwin Games.  Foster will play the series regular role of Lucinda and replaces Felisha Terrell in the role.

Apparently former Community show-runner Dan Harmon is working with FOX on a comedy pilot project, per THR.  No concrete details have been laid out for the comedy though it will likely be a multi-camera project.

Lifetime is moving forward with the drama pilot Cinnamon Girl that counts actress/producer Renee Zellweger as an EP.  Created by Zellweger and fellow EP Anthony Tambakis, Cinnamon Girl is a coming-of-age drama about four girls, Cassie, Lola, Junie and Lou living in Los Angeles amongst the music and movie scenes of the late 1960s/early 1970s.  Zellweger and Tambakis are co-writers on the story and Tambakis is writing the teleplay.  Gavin O’Connor will also be an EP and will direct the pilot and Danny Bramson is a producer on the project. 

USA Network picked up the new original reality series The Choir, based on the British series of the same name giving it a 10-episode order.  The one-hour series follows choirmaster Gareth Malone as he brings together Americans through music.  The US version is produced by Shed Media and is slated to premiere early next year. 

Extra host Maria Menounos will helm a reality series for Oxygen Media that is referred to as The Untitled Maria Menounos Project.  The series will follow the TV personality’s home life as she juggles her long-time boyfriend, her Greek parents and her wish to just take a vacation.  The show will debut in 2013. 

Also from Oxygen Media, the network selected Fall Out Boy musician Pete Wentz to host the second season of its tattoo competition series Best Ink.  Furthermore, supermodels Karolina Kurkova and Coco Rocha were chosen as coaches for the new modeling reality competition series The Face working with Naomi Campbell and fashion photographer Nigel Barker who is hosting. 

Action movie star Dolph Lundgren was tapped to host REELZCHANNEL’s first non-scripted competition series, Race to the Scene.  Set to debut next spring, Race to the Scene pits pairs of contestants as they race to and from actual movie locations and compete in challenges and stunts inspired by memorable movie scenes.  Casting is underway for Race to the Scene and interested participants can send an email to: [email protected].

Fremantlemedia and Random House are teaming to allow FremantleMedia develop scripted programming based on the publisher’s roster of fiction and nonfiction books.  This first-look deal will be part of Random House Television the newly created unit of Random House Studio which will be headed by Jeffrey Levine based at FremantleMedia’s Los Angeles offices.  Levine will report to Peter Gethers, President of Random House Studios.

~ INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS ~

Globally syndicated talk show, The Dr. Oz Show is crossing the pond and will debut to UK audiences via a licensing deal made between Discovery Networks UK and Sony Pictures Television (SPT).  Discovery will air the series on its lifestyle channel Discovery Home and Health.  The program, co-produced by Harpo Productions and SPT, is close to launching its fourth season in the US and is now syndicated in more than 200 markets and internationally it is available in 118 countries. 

Chello Zone’s Extreme Sports Channel (ESC) has commissioned a new docu-series focused on a BMX season across Europe. The one-hour series, Silent Revolution will have 13 episodes and will follow several riders from the UK and elsewhere in the world as they compete throughout the year and prepare for the challenges of meetings across the continent.   Silent Revolution is produced and distributed by Blood Sweat and Gears Ltd. and is slated to premiere August 20 in the UK and will additionally be broadcast on channel feeds in EMEA, France and Poland.

Tuesday A18-49 Analysis:  FOX was the overall winner Tuesday among the A18-49 viewers with a 2.6/8, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  FOX’s Hell’s Kitchen dished up top ratings during 8p at 2.6/9 and NBC’s America’s Got Talent was next at 2.4/8.  NBC’s America’s Got Talent in its second hour moved up to #1 at 9p with a 2.9/9 and FOX traded places with MasterChef at #2 with 2.5/7.  Univision won at 10p with La Que No Podia Amar at 2.1/6 and NBC’s Love in the Wild trailed in second place at 1.2/4.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Effective immediately, Katsuhiro Takagi advances to the position of President at Toei Animation Co. Ltd., up from Senior Director.  Katushiro has been with Toei Animation for more than 30 years and in his new capacity, he will continue to grow the studio’s international partnerships and expand the company into new markets. 

Scripps Networks Interactive Inc. has bolstered its London-based executive team by promoting Jonathan Sichel as Managing Director of the company’s operations in the UK and throughout the EMEA.  The company’s UK-based operations encompasses Food Network UK, Food Network South Africa, Fine Living Network and Travel Channel International.  In his new role based in London, Jonathan will supervise the daily operations of the company in the EMEA territory among other duties.  Jonathan will report to Bob Baskerville, Chief International Operating Officer, Scripps Networks Interactive.   Nick Thorogood, also based in London, has been appointed SVP/Content and Marketing for the UK and EMEA.  Nick will report to Jonathan Sichel and will manage content development and strategy related to programming and marketing efforts for the company’s wholly-owned and operated channels in the UK and EMEA. 

Knoxville-based Jupiter Entertainment is expanding and opening a new office in New York which will be managed by company veteran Matt Sprouse who will oversee operations as Co-Executive Producer.  A team of experienced and new production talent will be based at Jupiter New York in addition to Harrison Land as Manager/Development who will supervise development and the creation of new shows.  Jupiter New York will be the production hub for two of the company’s newest series, Homicide Hunters for Investigation Discovery and an untitled series for National Geographic Channel.  Besides company headquarters in Knoxville and the new office in New York, Jupiter has a third office in Los Angeles which launched in 2010.  Jupiter’s West Coast office manages the development and production of Discovery Channel’s series Sons of Guns and the new Animal Planet series Wild West Alaska. 

Beginning August 6, Jamie Mottram will become Director/Content Development for USA TODAY’s Sports Media Group.  Most recently, Jamie spearheaded strategy and development for blogs, social media and SEO for Yahoo! Media and helped strengthen Yahoo! Sports as its Senior Editor for blogs and community from 2007 to 2009.
