CYNTHIA TURNER’S
CYNOPSIS

07/01/04

Good morning. It’s Thursday, July 1, 2004, and now on with your first early morning briefing.

Yesterday at noon, the Don’t Count Us Out Coalition held a demonstration in Chicago outside a hotel where Nielsen Media Reserach CEO Susan Whiting was delivering the keynote speech to the Black Consumer Research and Advertising Summit.  In response, Nielsen issued the following statement, shown here in full:

“The Don’t Count Us Out coalition continues to misinform the people of Chicago. People Meters have been used nationally since 1987 and have proven to be the most accurate and complete way of measuring television viewing. Our local people meters samples are more representative of the diverse groups who make up our communities than the samples for the current ratings system. Nielsen has made a major effort to ensure that African-Americans and Latinos are accurately represented in its ratings. Nationwide, African American Households using People Meters represent 12.7% of the Nielsen sample, compared to 11.9% in the general population. Latino Households represent 10.5% of the Nielsen sample, compared to 9.8% in the general population.  In Chicago, African Americans represent 17.9% of the Nielsen sample, versus 17.5% of the general population, while Latinos represent 12.3% of the sample, compared to 12.4% of the overall population. We are willing to meet with any community leaders who have questions about our plans to introduce local people meters in Chicago and we look forward to a full discussion on this issue.”  For more info, Nielsen invites you to check out http://www.everyonecounts.tv/

Oprah did it; Rosie sort of did it, and now Donald will do it — his own national magazine called You’re Fired … just kidding.  It’s called Trump World, but the inaugural issue will include an inside look into his NBC series The Apprentice. The plan is to publish six issues annually, with a cover price of $5.95, with free issues being distributed to Trump hotel and casino guests. Publisher and editor Michael Jacobson describes the magazine as The Robb Report meets Vanity Fair meets Donald Trump.

20th has renewed host Ryan Seacrest for one more year, keeping his show On Air with Ryan Seacrest live for another season.

Rumors abound that Ted Harbert will be named the new top dog at E! Entertainment, filling the void left by Mindy Herman.

NY1 News anchor Pat Kiernan has signed to host Michael Davies new reality series on the WB, Studio 7, scheduled to debut on Thursday, July 22 at 9pm. Repeats of the show will air weekly on Sundays at 9p beginning on 7/25 (in September the repeat ep will be dropped).

Elsewhere at the WB, Robert Morton has signed on as exec prod of Drew Carey’s Green Screen, which will air on Thursdays this fall.

Three additions to ABC’s new series Desperate Housewives (Touchstone) – Brenda Strong who will narrate as the wives dead friend and make occasional appearances in flashback sequences; Steven Culp and Jesse Metcalfe. The show airs this fall, Sunday nights at 9pm beginning September 26.

NBC led the pack on Tuesday night with a 3.0/9 A18-49 rating according to Nielsen Media Research, with a lineup tha included Next Action Star (1.7/6) and Last comic Standing (3.7/11), and finishing up with a repeat of Law & Order SVU (3.6/10).  ABC and CBS were tied for #2.  ABC’s sitcom repeats aired from 8-10p, capped by a new episode of NYPD 24/7 managing a 2.5/7 demo rating. On Fox, an original Bernie Mac at 8p managed a 1.6/6, while a repeat of Method & Red at 830p  dipped slightly to a 1.4/5.  The Jury on Fox at 9p earned 1.1/3 A18-49 demo rating with a slight improvement among A25-54 (1.3/3). Summerland on WB at 9pm earned a 1.6/4 A18-49 rating, though its strength is among W18-34 (2.6/7) and female teens (4.1/13).

Infinity Broadcasting announced it would re-launch The Howard Stern Show, in nine of its US marketing, all of which are markets where Stern’s show had been taken off the air in late February by broadcast syndicators over concerns of what the FCC termed “indecent” material.  The nine stations that will get Stern’s show back beginning Monday, July 19 are: Houston (KIKK-AM), San Diego (KPLN-FM), Tampa (WQYK-AM), Pittsburgh (WBZZ-FM), Orlando (WOCL-FM), Austin (KQBT-FM), West Palm Beach (WPBZ-FM), Rochester (WZNE-FM) and Fresno (KRNC-FM).  With the addition of these markets, there are a total of 45 stations that carry The Howard Stern Show, including 27 Infinity Broadcasting O&O’s.

What do you think is the very BEST film of 2004 and the very WORST film of 2004 so far this year?  Send in your votes here (
) and I’ll tally them up and report back on yoru votes tomorrow.  Meanwhile, this weekend, syndicated series Ebert & Roeper (Buena Vista Television) reveal their picks in a special edition episode – we’ll compare your’s and theirs here tomorrow.

Kids Casting Call:  Taking its booking efforts on the road during July is PAX TV’s new variety series America’s Most Talented Kids.  The series producers will travel to several markets, where they will host open auditions for kids 3-15 yrs old, in search of kids to participate for their chance to go before celebrity judges on the PAX series. Kids will have two minutes to show off their talents in categories including, dancing, singing, juggling and magic. Markets and audition details are as follows:
-Los Angeles: Saturday, July 17, 10a-5p (Registration at the Van Ness Gate) Raleigh Studios, 5300 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, CA
-Boston/New Hampshire: Monday, July 19, 1-4p (Registration begins at 11:30a) Canobie Lake Park, 85 North Policy Street, Salem, NH
-Detroit: Saturday, July 24, 1-4p (Registration begins at 11:30a) The Oakland Mall, 412 West 14 Mile Road, Troy, MI

Online Casting Call: So you want to be an actor/actress, but you don’t have the courage to walk out of the door and into a casting call? Now you don’t have to, leave your home that is.  Producer National Lampoon has teamed with TalentMatch.com, and together will host an online casting call, for its comedy movie project, National Lampoon’s Pledge This! (Yes, the one starring Paris Hilton).  But before you go and get too excited, according to the casting breakdown, they are looking, “to award at least one speaking role….”  Tough odds.  TalentMatch.com members number 100,000+ (actors/bands/comedians/models) from 150+ countries, and have appeared in episodes of The Sopranos and Law and Order, as well as being cast several National Lampoon shows.  Filming will begin on Pledge This!, in Miami, this September.
