Cynopsis: Sports
07.18.13

Good morning. It’s Thursday, July 18, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Keith Olbermann is officially going home again, with ESPN announcing the launch of new late-night series Olbermann on Monday, Aug. 26 at 11p as a weekday series. Production will take place from ABC’s Times Square studios in New York City and break down the day’s relevant sports topics through “a mix of perspective and commentary, interviews, contributors, panel discussions and highlights.” Olbermann, of course, famously worked at the company as SportsCenter anchor from 1992-97. Olbermann’s deal will still allow him to work with TBS during the MLB post-season, a move announced earlier this year.

On the Air

The 84th MLB All-Star Game on FOX was another hit for the network, with the game ranking as the network’s highest-rated and most-watched broadcast since the American Idol finale in May. The game averaged a 6.9/12 fast national household rating/share, with 11 million viewers tuning in, according to Nielsen and likely winning the night in primetime when final national ratings are released. Those number are up 1% over last year in both rating a viewership. Host city New York drew a 11.3 rating, up 16% from 2012, while Detroit led all markets with a 20.3 rating, up 26% from last year.

The USOC gave a resounding “no” to calls to boycott the upcoming Sochi Winter Olympics if Russia grants asylum to Edward Snowden. The organization released a statement from spokesperson Patrick Sandusky that the maneuver would not serve the best interests of either the country or its athletes. “If there are any lessons to be learned from the American boycott of 1980, it is that Olympic boycotts do not work. Our boycott of the 1980 Olympic Games did not contribute to a successful resolution of the underlying conflict. It did, however, deprive hundreds of American athletes, all whom had completely dedicated themselves to representing our nation at the Olympic Games, of the opportunity of a lifetime. It also deprived millions of Americans of the opportunity to take pride in the achievements of our athletes, and in their dedication and commitment, at a time when we needed it most. While we acknowledge the seriousness of the issues at hand, we strongly oppose the notion that a boycott of the Olympic and Paralympic Games is in our country’s best interests.”

FS1 revealed plans for a pair of shows, including FOX Soccer Daily that will debut on Monday, Aug. 19 at 4p. The series will offer insight, analysis and coverage of the major soccer leagues and competitions around the world with an emphasis on Europe and North America.

The upcoming channel is also lining up the newest edition of FOX Sports’ documentary series Being with a spotlight on All-Star MVP Mariano Rivera. The famed Yankees pitcher is retiring and Being: Mariano Rivera has been in production since Spring Training. The program will premiere on FS1 within days of the pitcher throwing the final trademark cutter of his career.

Head Formula One honcho Bernie Ecclestone was indicted in German by prosecutors who accuse him of paying a $44 million bribe to German banker Gerhard Gribkowsky of Bayern Landesbank, that was tied to the sale of a stake in F1. Ecclestone denies the accusations and claims the money was given in order to prevent the banker from exposing him to a UK tax inquiry.

BTN announced the channel’s game broadcast teams and studio talent for the 2013 football season, which will feature 47 games, as well as pre-game, halftime and post-game coverage on Saturdays and football-themed studio shows every weeknight. For the seventh straight year, Dave Revsine, Gerry DiNardo and Howard Griffith will anchor Big Ten Football Saturday. Meanwhile, primary broadcast teams include Matt Devlin (play-by-play) and Glen Mason (analyst); Kevin Kugler (play-by-play) and Chuck Long (analyst); and Eric Collins (play-by-play) and Derek Rackley (analyst). New analysts and announcers joining the roster this season include Eric Crouch (analyst), Chris Denari (play-by-play), Jim Miller (studio analyst), Paul Burmeister (play-by-play), and Marcus Ray (studio analyst).

Speaking of the Big Ten, the league inked a six-year deal with the Detroit Lions to launch a new bowl game at Ford Field, according to the AP, while the ACC will provide the opponent. The new bowl will launch with the 2014 season although it has not been named or sponsored.

On the soccer front, FIFA President Sepp Blatter made waves on multiple fronts, first announcing plans to ask the governing body’s executive committee to consider moving the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to the winter instead in order to avoid the summer heat. The AP also reports that Blatter acknowledged that Brazil might have been the wrong choice as host of the 2014 World Cup if recent protests resurface. Blatter told German press agency DPA that ”if this happens again, we have to question whether we made the wrong decision awarding the hosting rights.”

ESPN selected Austin, Texas to be the next North American host city for the X Games. The Texas capital will host an X Games summer event for four years starting May 2014 at the new 1,500-acre Circuit of The Americas sports and entertainment complex in southeast Austin. X Games Austin will be held May 15-18, 2014.

Global media company Red Bull Media House and Toronto’s Buck Productions announced a partnership for MTV for the series McMorris & McMorris. The eight-episode, half-hour docu-reality series follows professional snowboarding brothers Mark and Craig from Regina, Sask. The series is set to premiere this fall in Canada on MTV.

Mexican soccer returns to Telemundo on Saturday with Leon and Atlante kicking off their respective seasons on Futbol Estelar at 9p. Andres Cantor handles all the action live from Nou Camp.

The Professional Bull Riders are partnering up with Rural Media Group to bring news, updates and live PBR events to fans on a daily and weekly basis via Rural Radio, the latest addition to SiriusXM which launched on Monday. PBR announcer Clint Adkins will co-host Western Sports Round Up along Alexis Bloomer, whose family has a long history in rodeo. The pair will present all the headlines, interviews and breaking news from 6-7p. Broadcasts on the channel will also include live coverage of the remaining 10 events of the Built Ford Tough Series.

The 2013 Little League Baseball World Series Challenger Exhibition Game will air on Saturday, Aug. 24 at 10:30a on PBS stations around the country with WVIA-TV partnering up to produce the game for the third year in a row. Underwriting for the telecast is being provided by the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania.
