Good morning. It’s Thursday, July 18, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tonight’s Premieres:
Lifetime: Project Runway at 9p
NUVOtv: A Step Away at 9p, House of Joy at 10p

Tonight’s Finales:
AMC: Showville at 10p
History: Swamp People at 10p
WE tv: House of Curves at 10p

All is forgiven. After a 1997 bridge-burning exit from ESPN, where he was a SportsCenter anchor, Keith Olbermann is returning to host an hour-long nighttime show on ESPN2. Olbermann, who has also worked on MSNBC, Fox and Current, said, “I could apologize a thousand times and we could get anybody who ever took offense to anything I ever did and bring them all into one place – we’d probably need Yankee Stadium… but practically speaking… all that is going to make a difference is how I conduct myself.” His new show debuts Monday, August 26 at 11p.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

While some were analyzing why the social media mania that attended the first airing of Syfy‘s Sharknado on July 11 (5,00 tweets a minute) didn’t translate into monster ratings (the TV-movie had a so-so 1.4 million viewers – but let’s see what happens for its encore tonight at 7p), we were wondering: Sharknado? Why? Screenwriter Thunder Levin lets Cynopsis in on a little secret. “Syfy already had the title, and I had to craft a script around it,” says Levin. “I started with the thought, ‘What would happen if LA were hit with a hurricane?’ The streets here flood if it rains for five minutes so we’d be completely unprepared. And then I added sharks. And tornadoes.”  Mystery solved!

The Diggers on National Geographic Channel are on the hunt again this summer. As history buffs George “KG” Wyant and Tim “Ringy” Saylor look for artifacts in one-time battlegrounds and backyards, they find everything from bullets to a weapon of mass destruction. Summer premieres of the series begin Wednesday, August 7 at 8p.

Soured on Apple: Initial reaction to reports that Apple is planning a TV service that allows viewers to skip ads, and would compensate networks for lost ad revenue isn’t (no surprise!) positive. “This is not a viable economic model and subscribers to the system would not pay an adequate premium to compensate for it,” Rino Scanzoni, chief investment officer for WPP’s GroupM, told Variety. But Google‘s in the game, too. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the tech giant has been in discussions with media companies about an Internet TV service that would stream their programming. So far, at least, no licensing deals have been reached.

HBO is adding another sitcom to its stable, with an order for Togetherness. The half-hour show stars Brett Pierson, Melanie Lynskey (the memorable Rose on Two and a Half Men), Amanda Peet and Steve Zissis, who will also write and serve as a consulting producer. Production begins in early 2014.

Asiana Airlines, which threatened to sue San Francisco’s KTVU-TV for using racial slurs in misreporting the names of the pilots in the July 6 Boeing 777 crash that killed three people, has backed down, saying it will not take legal action after all.

ABC announced its premiere schedule, which has Dancing With the Stars, now just airing Mondays, bowing on September 16 at 8p. Debuting on Friday, September 20 are Last Man Standing at 8p, The Neighbors at 8:30 and Shark Tank at 9p. Then it’s on to official premiere week, with a new Castle on Monday, September 23 at 10p. Tuesday, September 24 brings the freshman drama Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. at 8p, sitcoms The Goldbergs at 9p and Trophy Wife at 9:30p, and drama Lucky 7 at 10p. The Middle at 8p and new sitcom Back in the Game at 8:30p are lead-ins on Wednesday, September 25 for a one-hour season premier of Modern Family (new comedy Super Fun Night premieres at 9:30p on October 2), and Nashville at 10p. Grey’s Anatomy gets a two-hour premiere on Thursday, September 26 at 9p; Scandal returns for Thursday’s 10p hour on October 3, while new drama Once Upon a Time in Wonderland is introduced at 8p on October 10. Sunday, September 29 ushers in Once Upon a Time at 8p, followed by Revenge at 9p and a new soap, Betrayal at 10p.

TVGN is gearing up for fall with a mix of reality shows and celeb vehicles. Mother of All Talent tracks a mother/daughter duo who run a talent agency for kids (overbearing mother? Check), while Tequila Sisters follows the soapy doings of a Hispanic family living in Southern California. On the star spectrum, Wendy Williams brings her signature brand of outrageous to The Wendy Williams Project (working title), a series documenting the trials and triumphs the talk show host faces making her Broadway debut in Chicago. And the net is banking on country singer John Rich being charismatic enough to pull off John Rich Project (working title), “part talk, part reality and all parts Nashville.” All four shows premiere this fall.

As if there wasn’t enough to marvel at ComicCon, Adult Swim and State Farm have partnered for events to “boost the convention experience,” including a contest that rewards fans for dressing up as their favorite Adult Swim character (details at adultswimpresents.com). Not in San Diego this week? No problem  fans can also submit selfies.

~ RETURNING SERIES ~

Rookie Blue took to Twitter yesterday to announce its renewal for a fifth season on ABC. “Season 5 confirmed! A big huge Thank You to all our amazing fans who made this happen! You renewed the blue!” read the show’s tweet.

~ SYNDICATION NEWS ~

They really like her! The Meredith Vieira Show has been sold to the NBC Owned Television Stations, representing over 27% of the nation’s homes. The one-hour chatfest with the empathetic host will be produced in an NYC studio made to look like her home, and offer “insightful stories that make viewers laugh, learn and feel inspired.”

Don’t miss our insightful sponsorship activation panel at the 2013 Cynopsis Sports Business Summit on Aug. 14. ~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

No offense, but… Image Comics‘ hit comic book Todd, the Ugliest Kid on Earth, is being developed as an animated series with Titmouse, Inc. “We wouldn’t trust just anyone to shepherd the deranged and dysfunctional world of Todd to the boob tube,” said Todd co-creator M.K. Perker, “it had to be just the right group of godless, self-medicated comedy producers and animators.”

Conan O’Brien sidekick Andy Richter takes over the spotlight in Step Up, a new game show in the works at Endemol USA. The comedian will act as host for contestants trying to climb a pyramid for cash. Endemol also developed Deal or No Deal.

The new girl is popular! Liz Meriwether, creator and executive producer of Fox sitcom New Girl, has inked a multi-year deal with 20th Century Fox TV to develop new projects for the studio, while still overseeing her sitcom as it enters season three. “[Liz] is hilariously funny and as hard-working as they come, and we feel like New Girl is just the beginning of what she can do,” praised 20th Century Fox TV chairmen Gary Newman and Dana Walden.

More Sharknado news! Syfy has greenlit a sequel, to be produced by The Asylum and scheduled for 2014. The working title is Sharknado 2; fans will determine the subtitle by tweeting suggestions to @SyfyMovies using #Sharknado. Work that social media, Syfy!

Abby Huntsman, daughter of former Utah Governor and 2012 Presidential candidate Jon, is replacing S.E. Cupp as co-host of MSNBC daytimer The Cycle. Huntsman, who has been a political commentator for CNN and MSNBC since working on her father’s campaign. She joins co-hosts Toure, Ari Melber and Krystal Ball, who returns from maternity leave on July 29.

~ CASTING NEWS ~

The show must go on. Glee is looking for singer/actors to fill two new roles: a “cute and quirky” twentysomething named Jenny, and an African-American student. Calls for both parts went out the week before Corey Monteith’s tragic death on July 13 at age 31; the show is proceeding with casting.

Nelson Franklin has signed on to CBS’s new sitcom, The Millers, about Nathan Miller (Will Arnett), a reporter whose divorce inspires his father (Beau Bridges) to leave his wife of 43 years. Franklin plays Adam, Nathan’s brother-in-law.

Discovery Channel knows how to grab a guy’s attention: the net’s Naked & Afraid, which leaves total strangers stranded with no food, water or clothes for 21 days, was the top non-fiction cable program among men 25-54 on Sunday, July 14, and scored 2.6 million total viewers.

Tuesday A18-49 Analysis: FOX won Tuesday night among A18-49 viewers handily with a 3.2/10, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. ~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Turner Broadcasting Chairman-CEO Phil Kent is leaving in January, the company reports. “He and I agreed that now is the right time to announce the next generation of leadership,” said Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes. Kent, who has been at Turner since 1993, was instrumental in restructuring Turner after he was promoted to his current position in 2003, but CNN has been lagging behind Fox News under his watch, and now is often beaten by MSNBC as well. John Martin will take over as CEO; Kent will remain as chairman for a transitional period.

Oxygen Media‘s Cori Abraham has been bumped up to Senior Vice President, Development and International. In addition to overseeing the development group, she’ll now work with the NBCU international sales team. While continuing to to report to Senior Vice President, Original Programming and Development Rod Aissa, Abraham will also report to Oxygen president Jason Klarman.

Joining host Neil Patrick Harris for the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards are Renato Basile as producer, Danette Herman as co-producer, director Louis J. Horvitz and Brian Stonestreet as scenic designer, announced Executive Producer Ken Erlich. And, of course, a slew of TV stars.
