Netflix is continuing its licensing partnership with NBCUniversal Domestic Television Distribution involving cable and broadcast TV shows, though excluding current season programming. The renewed deal also includes movies available for streaming online. TV shows from NBCU’s cable networks available through Netflix’s Watch Instantly plan include previous season episodes of Warehouse 13, Psych, Keeping Up with the Kardashians and Kimora: Life in the Fab Lane. Broadcast shows from NBCU include prior-season eps of The Office, 30 Rock, Parenthood, Law & Order: SVU and The Event. Future seasons of NBC’s shows will be available via Netflix on a one-season delay basis.
News Corp. under the helm of Rupert Murdoch said yesterday it has pulled its take-over bid valued at $12 billion for the remaining portion of British Sky Broadcasting Group it currently does not own. This revelation comes after the British phone-hacking scandal has delayed the UK government’s review of the proposed acquisition which also prompted the closing of News Corp.’s newspaper News of the World.
A third season is in store for ABC’s Rookie Blue. The network picked up a third season with 13 episodes produced by Entertainment One (eOne) and Thump Inc. Rookie Blue airs on ABC in the US, Global Television in Canada and internationally on Universal Networks International’s pay-TV channels.
A second season renewal was granted by MTV for its series Teen Wolf. The new season consists of a dozen one-hour episodes slated to return in 2012. Currently in its Monday at 10p time slot, almost 1.7 million total viewers watch Teen Wolf each week.
An updated global ad forecast was released yesterday by ZenithOptimedia saying the worldwide ad expenditure will increase by 4.1% in 2011. The report also stated the total global ad expenditure would reach $471 billion in 2011, the level it was in 2008 before the recession. Internet advertising globally is the most rapidly growing medium at 14.2% per year between 2010 and 2013. Television brought in the most new ad dollars, though, at 49% of the total.
TV One has added three more original episodes to its one-hour series Unsung, the biography show that spotlights the lives and careers of successful artists or groups that have not received significant recognition or whose stories are not told. Unsung airs on Mondays at 10p this summer and is produced by A. Smith & Co. Productions.
This Sunday at 10p as part of the season four premiere of Breaking Bad on AMC, the network is offering viewers a sneak preview of the new season of The Walking Dead.
Premium network ENCORE, under the heading of Encore Originals, will exclusively premiere a three-hour miniseries Moby Dick based on the classic novel by Herman Melville. Moby Dick opens August 1 at 8p and concludes on August 2 at 8p starring William Hurt, Ethan Hawke and Gillian Anderson. Moby Dick is an RHI production in participation with TELE MUNCHEN and in cooperation with GATE FILMPRODUKTION. ENCORE also bows two other Encore Originals this fall with the miniseries The Take from ITV Studios Global Entertainment and based on the crime thriller by Martina Cole as well as the previously-announced feature-length original documentary, Method to the Madness of Jerry Lewis from Mansfield Avenue Productions.
Ted Danson is joining the cast of CBS’ CSI: Crime Scene Investigation as the new CSI Supervisor for the overnight shift after leading the crime lab in Portland. His character makes his first appearance on the season premiere on September 21 at 10p. Danson also will continue to be a series regular on the HBO series Bored to Death.
Mike Fleiss, creator and executive producer of ABC’s The Bachelor franchise will be the Executive Producer of The CW’s upcoming one-hour reality series H8R hosted by Mario Lopez. H8R is produced by Fleiss’ Next Entertainment in association with Warner Horizon Television. The show’s other executive producers include creators Lisa Gregorisch-Dempsey, Jeremy Spiegel and Lopez; Mike Harney also serves as co-executive producer.
CBS’ upcoming reality show, Same Name announced comedian Kathy Griffin, former pro boxer Mike Tyson and NFL player Reggie Bush will appear on the series. Same Name has celebrity guest stars exchange the lives of someone who happens to share their name. David Hasselhoff appears in the series premiere slated to launch July 24 at 9p. Cris Abrego Productions, LLC produces the series.
After weeks of contract negotiations, Jesse Spencer earlier this week made a new deal to continue his role as Dr. Robert Chase on FOX’s House for the next season. House returns for an eighth season on FOX premiering October 3 at 9p.
Mark Valley (Human Target) joins NBC’s Harry’s Law for season two as a series regular. Valley will play one of Harriet “Harry” Korn’s new hot-shot attorneys hired as she becomes a more sought-after defense attorney. Valley joins recently-announced Broadway star Karen Olivo who will play another new lawyer. NBC’s Harry’s Law debuts September 21 at 9p.
Casting Call: Iconic Casting invites applicants to participate in a pilot project The Ultimatum (wt) for a major cable network. They are looking for women and men ready to get married even if their partner is not. The show would have one partner deliver the ultimatum: “marry me or lose me forever.” If you are ready to say “I do” please email your story, contact info and attach a photo of you and your partner to [email protected].
Casting Call: A major network is casting for females between the ages of 25-35 for a style makeover show from the producers of Project Runway and Design Star. If you are a young professional female and live in Southern California/Los Angeles area please consider replying if you have a big event planned and don’t know what to wear; have an upcoming family reunion; a job interview; wedding; or another important occasion or feel inadequate in the style department. If you are selected for the series, you will receive a makeover and clothing from a well-known stylist and more. If you want to apply or know someone who is in need of a style makeover, please call Sam at kivicasting at (213) 489-7722 or email [email protected].
Eva Longoria and George Lopez will share the stage as co-hosts of the National Council of La Raza (NCLR)’s ALMA Awards which honors the achievements of Latinos in entertainment encompassing film, TV and music. The ALMA Awards telecast will air September 16 on NBC.
