CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

07/14/05

Good morning.  It’s Thursday, July 14, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

The National Hockey League will be back in business and on the ice next season – tho the exact terms of that business and the on-air business won’t be fully announced until next week.  It will be at that time the players adn the Board of Governors will approve the new deal arrived at late yesterday.  NBC Sports has a broadcast deal with the league; the cable deal had been with ESPN who opted out followed the cancellation of last season.

Tonight’s Premiere:
ABC:  ABC News: Hooking Up at 9p

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

Nielsen Sports and the National Football League have come to terms on a license agreement for Sponsorship Scorecard, a service providing both a ratings currency and verification service for sponsored placed media in all televised sporting events.  The service allows advertisers and teams to know how many television viewers by key demographic groups see their sponsored elements, thereby giving the client an idea of their return on investment. Through information provided by Sponsorship Scorecard, advertisers and teams can assess which sports, teams and even locations within venues will provide the greatest impact and most cost efficient return in reaching their target audience.  More information is provided at www.nielsensports.com.

Elsewhere in football, Cris Collingsworth who has been a studio analyst with Fox Sports since 1998, is switching to the NBC team where he has signed a six year deal.   He will join Bob Costas for Sunday night football beginning in 2006 as a studio analyst.  No word yet on who will do the play-by-play in the booth with John Madden, tho Al Michaels name keeps popping up.

TV Land has picked up Good Times and will launch the show with a 48-hour marathon starting Saturday, July 23 at 6a.  The Maude spin-off will air in its regularly scheduled time slot of 10p M-T / Th-Su, starting July 25.

Anthony Bourdain has no place to stay in the Travel Channel‘s new series Anthony Bourdain: No Reservation. The show is scheduled for Mondays at 10p starting August 1st and takes Bourdain internationally as he tries to bum a place to crash in places ranging from Iceland to off the Jersey Turnpike.

Discovery Health Channel will premiere the six-part series Skeleton Stories in fourth qtr 2005.  The series takes a look inside forensic anthropology and the last thing a “human being leaves behind” — their bones. The series is produced for Discovery Health Channel by Atlas Media Corp.

Discovery Channel is on the hunt for Nascar’s next superstar to join the Roush Racing team, in The Roush Race. Twenty-five racers will compete on and off the track for a sponsored ride.  The winner of the three-week competition will compete in the 2006 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.   Discovery Channel is filming the selection process as hopefuls compete in a series of challenges – mentally and physically, as well as testing their marketing appeal. The Roush Race will air this fall on Discovery. What is a Roush?  A part of Roush Industries, which operates eight motor sports teams; four NASCAR Winston Cup drivers, two drivers in the Busch series and two in the Craftsman truck series, which is what Discovery Channel contestants are vying for.

HorseTV Media Group, Inc., has announced The Horse Channel has been selected as the name its new television channel that will provide viewers with information, facts and history about … well, horses. The channel launches this fall, having completed funding in late March, and will be available 24/7.

Speaking of horses, Hallmark Channel‘s original movie The Colt debuted last Saturday night and delivered 2.6 million viewers and a 1.6 HH Rtg.  Among key demos, The Colt earned a .6 among W25-54 and a .5 among A25-54.

* NEW ORDERS / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *

Canada’s Breakthrough Films & Television has started production on a new design reality series, Design Match, which will air on the Fine Living Network and in Canada on HGTV.  The 30m series pits two homeowner design teams against each other as they try to re-create a professionally designed model room in their own homes, with one-tenth the budget. The work is then judged by the designer who created the original model room.  The show is hosted by Hal Eisen and Meredith Heron, who will also help the couples with their decisions and execution.

WB:

  • 7th Heaven will add Haylie Duff to the cast next season for 13 episodes.  In the fall, 7th Heaven will launch its 10th season, tho whether or not it will be the last remains to be decided and/or negotiated.

A&E in development:

  • Restorative Justice (New Line Television) (a working title) a documentary-style program that provides victims an opportunity to confront their attackers.
  • Released (Scott Sternberg Prods) (also a working title) follows convicts in the first 48 hours following their release from jail.

A&E in production:

  • God or the Girl (Wolper Organization Inc.) is a reality series which follows men as they struggle with the decision to enter the seminary.  A&E has ordered 5 eps.
  • Jackpot Diaries (Gay Rosenthal Prods) is all about post-lottery life and the life changing effects of sudden millionairehood.  6 eps are in the works.

Studio Development Deals:

  • NBC Universal Television Studio has signed director/producer David Semel to a 2 year/7 figure deal to develop new series.  Additionally, he will be co-exec prod/director for the NUTS series House which airs on Fox.  Semel was the exec prod of the NBC series American Dreams for its entire run.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1881-Sheriff Pat Garrett shoots William Bonney, popularly known as Billy the Kid, to death at the Maxwell Ranch in New Mexico.  With as many as 17 murders to his name by the age of 18, Billy the Kid was arrested by Garrett, brought to trial, and sentenced to death.  He escaped from jail, and Garrett, after tracking him for three months, received a tip about his hideout, waited in Billy’s darkened bedroom, and shot the fugitive to death at close range.
