~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~

Many of Viacom’s cable channels went dark on DirecTV Tuesday just before midnight ET as the two companies reached an impasse in their negotiations concerning a new carriage deal.  Specifically, the channels that are now dark on DirecTV include Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, MTV, BET, VH1, CMT, Logo, Spike, TV Land, MTV2, VH1 Classic, Palladia, Nick Jr., NickToons and TeenNick as well as their hi-def related networks.  Counting the hi-def channels, DirecTV carries a total of 26 Viacom-owned channels.  A Viacom rep on the company’s blog wrote that DirecTV “dropped the channels without giving Viacom advanced warning,” and further stated the last time the two entities were in contact was at 11a on Tuesday.  DirecTV, which has around 20 million subscribers, related Viacom is asking for a carriage fee increase of more than 30% and blames the blackout on Viacom.  Furthermore, to put pressure on DirecTV to resolve their carriage dispute, Viacom is also limiting free online access to many of its top shows.  Full episodes of The Daily Show, SpongeBob SquarePants, Jersey Shore and The Colbert Report among others are now currently not available.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

The 2013-2014 development season has begun with CBS ordering a half-hour comedy pilot titled Ex-Men from Rob Greenberg, producer/director of How I Met Your Mother.  The project is also from Eric and Kim Tannenbaum and is about a young guy who becomes a buddy of more experienced guys that he meets while living in a short-time rental complex.

truTV approved a new weekly series starring basketball star and TNT NBA analyst Shaquille O’Neal.  The project, Upload with Shaquille O’Neal (wt) will watch as O’Neal and his comic friends including Gary Owen, who hosts the series, Godfrey and a special guest, will search online for the funniest online videos to comment on.  They will also create their own viral videos, pull pranks and parody current pop culture stories.  truTV ordered 10 episodes from FishBowl Worldwide Media and Shaq Entertainment.  FishBowl’s Vin Di Bona, Bruce Gersh and Susan Levison and Beth Greenwald and Shaq Entertainment’s Perry Rogers, Colin Smeeton and Mike Parris will all serve as EPs along with Mike Gibbons.

Yesterday, Starz unveiled development plans for two new projects from the creators of Spartacus and The Ring.  The network is partnering with Steven S. DeKnight for Incursion, a sci-fi action thriller about a group of soldiers involved in a dangerous war against an alien race.  Each season of the proposed series will be fought on a new, exotic planet as humanity goes deeper into enemy territory.  Starz is also developing Vlad Dracula, a project described as a melding of historical facts about the 15th century Prince of Wallachia and the fictional character of Dracula.  Rob Tapert is on board to produce and this project is from J. Michael Straczynski, writer/producer behind Thor, Underworld: Awakening, Babylon 5 as well as Roy Lee (The Ring, The Strangers).

CBS’ The Good Wife has added yet another high-profile actor for the fourth season this fall.  Amanda Peet will be joining in a recurring role as a military lawyer who sues a contract worker for an attempted sexual assault.  Peet’s character hires Alicia (Julianna Margulies) as her lawyer and the two become friends and confidantes.

Upcoming new FOX comedy, The Mindy Project has added two to the cast as series regulars: Amanda Seeton will play Shauna Dicanio who does billing in the front office of the medical practice where Mindy Kaling’s character works and Stephen Tobolowsky will play Dr. Marc Shulman, the head of the practice.  In addition, Ike Barinholtz joins as a recurring character, Morgan Tookers, a new hire at the medical office, an ex-con male nurse with limited social skills and questionable hygiene.

Casting Call:  The new daily half-hour game show, Let’s Ask America hosted by Kevin Pereira and launching in seven Scripps television markets on September 17 is searching for an official canine mascot.  The search runs through July 27 and people are invited to enter their dog at: www.letsaskamerica.tv.  Please provide a description of your dog including gender, breed, date of birth and name, along with a photo and a 30- to 60-second video of the dog and a written paragraph explaining why your dog deserves to be the show’s mascot.  The dog finalists will be judged by a panel consisting of show producers and one final dog winner will be selected and contacted on or before July 30.  The winning dog will be featured on the show Let’s Ask America and will receive a trip to Los Angeles, a professional photo shoot and/or video session and more.  Let’s Ask America is produced by Telepictures and paraMedia inc. and is distributed by Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution.
