Daytime series The Martha Stewart Show has been canceled by Hallmark Channel. The show will continue only through the current season, which ends in May. Hallmark Channel will air reruns of The Martha Stewart Show through next summer. Hallmark is apparently in discussions with Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia about renewing the company’s other programs it currently has on-air in daytime including Emeril’s Table and Mad Hungry with Lucinda Scala Quinn.
As a follow-up to America the Story of US, HISTORY will premiere the 12-hour, six night event, Mankind the Story of All of Us (wt) in 2012. Production on the series is now underway and has already spanned two years. The series tells the epic struggle of mankind and how we have survived despite living on a harsh, brutal planet. Mankind the Story of All of Us will mark HISTORY’s first global series premiere in addition to spawning a worldwide education initiative. The series is produced for HISTORY by Nutopia.
New docu-drama anthology series, Braving the Elements was approved by The Weather Channel Companies (TWCC). The original series will follow the work, subculture and professions that happen outdoors and are impacted by weather, seasons and extreme locations. The anthology will feature multiple miniseries consisting of four half-hour episodes each including one titled Lights Out following the first-responder crews who restore power during severe weather conditions. Braving the Elements will debut in March.
The ABC News magazine series Beyond Belief will debut on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network January 24 at 10p. Dubbed Beyond Belief on OWN, each one-hour episode is hosted by Wes Moore and the series will contain extended content relating to the stories told of wonder, mysteries and miracles.
In mid-March, USA Network rolls out debuts of two of its originals series when Fairly Legal opens a second season on March 16 at 9p, followed by the final season premiere of In Plain Sight at 10p. Fairly Legal is from Universal Cable Productions and is co-commissioned by Universal Networks International (UNI), the worldwide channels unit of NBCUniversal. In Plain Sight is produced by Universal Cable Productions and is shot completely on location in and around Albuquerque, NM.
Action series Greatest Tank Battles is back for a second season starting January 11 at 10p on Military Channel. The series brings to life actual 20th century battles using realistic CGI animation combined with archival footage and first-person accounts. The 10-episode series is produced by Breakthrough Films and Television for Military Channel.
Food Network serves up eight new episodes of Heat Seekers beginning January 16 at 8p. The series features Aaron Sanchez and Roger Mooking as they discover the spiciest foods around the country.
Food Network has additionally set January 26 at 10p as the premiere date and time for new series Fat Chef. This six-episode series follows twelve overweight chefs as they work with therapists, nutritionists and trainers over four months to shed pounds and overcome issues.
In other Food Network news, the channel opened the New Year with the premiere of Rachael vs. Guy Celebrity Cook-Off on January 1, which posted a 1.5 rating among A25-54. The culinary competition show airs Sundays at 9p through February 5.
On Sunday at 10p, Animal Planet opened a new season of Finding Bigfoot which tallied 1.6 million total viewers and now ranks as the series’ most-watched episode ever. The debut episode additionally pulled in 861,000 A25-54 viewers and 812,000 with A18-49.
VH1 scored 2.4 million total viewers for the season two premiere of Mob Wives on January 1 at 8p. The telecast also averaged a 1.4 rating with A18-49.
January 1 additionally saw the new season premieres of Crack at 8p and Hash at 9p, both airing on National Geographic Channel and part of Drugs, Inc. Crack averaged a 0.9 rating with A25-54 while Hash posted an average 1.0 rating with A25-54.

New year, new awards! PBS picked up six episodes of the series Inside Nature’s Giants from Windfall Films. The one-hour episodes will air on PBS as part of the network’s Science and Natural History programming lineup.
Target Entertainment acquired the international format and finished program rights to Storage Hunters (21 x 30′). Produced for truTV in the US, Target Entertainment has sold Storage Hunters to several broadcasters including Dave in the UK; to SBS in the Netherlands; and to OLN in Canada. All three broadcasters will premiere the series this year. T Group Production produces the series.
In a pre-sale deal, Discovery ID Channel in the US picked up the history series Killer Trials: Judgment Day (26 x 26′) from World Media Rights. The series examines history’s most horrible crimes and the struggle to bring the criminals to justice. The series will be distributed internationally by IMG using the name Great Crimes and Trials.
A drama project influenced by the current presidential race was picked up by ABC as a pilot order. The project is co-written and directed by filmmaker Roland Emmerich. Mark Gordon is also on board to produce. Set in New York City amidst the presidential bid of 2012, the plot is about a young astrophysics student who learns his calling is not in science but somewhere between heaven and hell. The Mark Gordon Co. and ABC Studios are producing. Emmerich and Harald Kloser are writers.
The CW ordered a crime drama pilot titled Cult from Rockne O’Bannon, the creator of Farscape. The plot centers on a young, curious female production assistant on a popular TV show called Cult who joins a journalist blogger to investigate fanatics of the show who might be recreating crimes seen on the program. Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage along with Len Goldstein are all set to executive produce as will O’Bannon who will also write.
Original scripted crime series Copper, set in mid-1800s New York, has cast Tom Weston-Jones (MI-5) to star as Irish-American cop Kevin Corcoran, as announced by BBC America, Cineflix Studios and Shaw Media. Other cast members include Kyle Schmid as Robert Morehouse, a handsome bon vivant and a member of Manhattan’s aristocracy and Anastasia Griffith playing the sophisticated and spirited Elizabeth Haverford. Franka Potente was also tapped to play Eva Heissan, a smart businesswoman and Madam of Eva’s Paradise. The production team for Copper also added Steve Cosens as Director/Photography, John Blackie as Production Designer and Delphine White as Costume Designer. Copper will premiere on BBC America this summer and in Canada via Shaw Media’s Showcase in fall 2012.

Saturday A18-49 Analysis: ABC rocked 2011 to a close Saturday night at 3.0/11 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, ABC’s annual New Year’s Rockin’ Eve finished first at 1.9/7 while a three-way tie happened for second place between FOX’s Terra Nova rebroadcast, NBC’s Grimm repeat and Univision’s Sabado Gigante at 0.5/2 each. ABC continued to lead through 9p with more of its 40th Anniversary New Year’s Rockin’ Eve special at 3.1/11 followed by CBS’ movie presentation at 0.7/3. During the 10p hour, ABC closed the night on top with New Year’s Rockin’ Eve 2012 at 4.1/15 and NBC slipped into the #2 spot with its New Year’s Eve with Carson Daly special at 0.9/3.

Sunday A18-49 Analysis: NBC kicked off the New Year Sunday in the lead with an 8.4/21 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. CBS opened the night at 7p ahead with 60 Minutes at 3.2/9 and NBC’s Football Night in America Part 2 was next at 2.4/7. NBC dominated the 8p hour with Football Night in America Part 3 and the start of the Sunday Night Football season finale at an average of 7.2/19 and CBS was #2 with the average of 60 Minutes and an Unforgettable encore at 2.0/5. NBC reached its highest ratings of the night during 9p as Sunday Night Football delivered a 9.9/24 followed by FOX at an average of 1.6/4 for its animated comedy repeats Family Guy and American Dad. MEC North America’s CEO Marla Kaplowitz announced a slew of new executive hires and promotions:
- Dennis Donlin was named President Team AT&T joining from Mediabrands where he served as EVP/Managing Director.
- Michele Pauchuk is now President of MEC Canada reporting to Marla Kaplowitz. Michele joins from Initiative where she was EVP/Managing Director.
- Dave Crammond received a promotion to SVP/Managing Director of Trading and Operations, reporting to Michele Pauchuk. Tracy Bellamy was also upped to VP/Managing Partner of Connection Planning.
- Julia Jones was hired as Managing Partner for the Colgate Palmolive account in North America. Julia is based in New York and reports to Eamonn Store, President/Global Solutions.
- Abby Spatz was also tagged as Managing Partner to head the Chanel account in the US. She, too, reports to Eamonn Store.
- Courtenay Harry joins as Senior Partner/Planning Director to spearhead media planning for Pepperidge Farm part of the agency’s Campbell’s Soup business. Courtenay reports to Beth Egan, Managing Partner/Account Director for Campbell’s Soup.
- Rick Acompora will become Managing Partner/Account Director to work on numerous clients, reporting to Marla Kaplowitz.
- Christine Stack joins as a Partner/Director of Senior Talent Acquisition, reporting to Michelle Guglielmelli, Managing Partner/Human Resources and Talent Management.
- JP James started his new position as Director/Engagement Planning for AT&T last July, reporting to Dennis Donlin.
- The MEC Interaction team hired Jitka Petrickova as Managing Director/Digital West.
- Cathy Salazar was elevated to Senior Partner/Practice Lead of Search and Kristine Segrist becomes Managing Director/Social.
- Amy Elkins was added to MEC as Partner/Digital Director, reporting to Jeff Killingsworth, Managing Partner/GM of the agency’s Los Angeles office.
- Derek Bhopalsingh was tapped by MEC Canada as VP/Managing Partner of MEC Interaction.
Beginning January 17, Amy Entelis will join CNN in the newly-created role as SVP/Talent and Content Development for CNN Worldwide. Amy will oversee show development including pilots and program acquisitions, talent recruitment and strategy for all CNN networks encompassing CNN, HLN and CNN International. Based in New York, Amy will report to Mark Whitaker, CNN Worldwide Managing Editor.
Studios 121 tagged Luis Estrada as President. Luis was one of the co-founders of Studios 121 and has held the positions of COO and President/Sales and Marketing in the past. In his new role, Luis will manage overall operations, sales and general management. He replaces Michael Fletcher who has departed the company to pursue other business opportunities.
